Strategic Planning Committee O.F.A.H. Board of Directors Rob Hare Bill Blackwell Frank WIck Jack Hedman John Ford Glenn Rivard Debbie Rivard Ed Giffin Tony Jackson Doug Ogston Scott Petrie Fred Gerberdt Gerry Haarmeyer O.F.A.H. Staff Members Mike Reader, Executive Director Terry Quinney, Provincial Manager of Fish and Wildlife Services Greg Farrant, Manager of Government Affairs and Policy Sue MacCallum, Cheif Financial Officer Andy Houser, Special Advisor Conservation Issues Robert Pye, Member Manager of Member Services and Corporate Relations Francine MacDonald, Assistant Manager of Fish and Wildlife Services What is Strategic Planning? Strategic planning is making choices. It is a process designed to support leaders in being intentional about their goals and objectives. Simply put, strategic planning is a management tool to help the O.F.A.H. do a better job. Our strategic plan will guide the acquisition and allocation of resources to achieve our priorities.

President s Message I would like to extend my deepest congratulations to the O.F.A.H. Board of Directors, and our head office staff who contributed to the document, for their tremendous effort in developing a strategic plan for the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, which will guide the organization through the next five years and beyond. In 2007, the O.F.A.H. launched its initiative to focus on strategic planning in order to direct the organization s focus on its commitment to plan strategically for the future. The plan that was produced is extensive, and the deliberations that began in June 2007 to develop a strategy was ultimately presented to a comprehensive committee of Board members from 2007 to 2009. This document was the result of over 3,000 hours of collective work with key O.F.A.H. head office staff, led by Executive Director, Mike Reader. In various terms, the plan identifies the corporation s strengths, and its key abilities and resources to move forward for our membership, and the fish and wildlife resources of Ontario. The O.F.A.H. has a tremendous responsibility for the future of angling and hunting in Ontario, and I am proud of the fact that this responsibility is never taken lightly around our Board table, or in our O.F.A.H. head office business operations. This strategic plan will provide benefits long into the future, and will allow the O.F.A.H. to grow and prosper for generations to come. O.F.A.H. strategic planning is all about staying true to our grassroots values and professional nature. 2011-2015 STRATEGIC PLAN Rob Hare, President Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters 2010

Executive Summary Let me take this opportunity to congratulate all of those involved in the significant undertaking of the development of a strategic plan for the future of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. The strategic planning committee consisted of key appointed staff and a select committee of O.F.A.H. Board members who worked tirelessly to consider all aspects of planning in order to take the organization forward in a positive and efficient manner. There were many items that the strategic planning committee and the Board of Directors considered while developing this strategy, ultimately arriving at a Mission Statement, a Vision Statement, and the components of a comprehensive plan to make the organization stronger and more efficient on behalf of its membership. Extensive hours were contributed to this planning process, and ultimately the development of the planning document. After thirteen meetings, and countless hours of thought-provoking discussions, the strategic planning document was endorsed by the O.F.A.H. Board of Directors in September 2010. Your Board of Directors and staff look forward to the next five years, and the subsequent arrangement between a good business model, sound business management practices, financial accountability, and a corporate sense of awareness of itself and its responsibilities in working toward the achievement of many of the objectives of the planning process. Throughout this plan, the O.F.A.H. has been true to itself corporately, and to its 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, in recognizing that the O.F.A.H. is the voice of anglers and hunters in Ontario, and beyond our provincial borders. Michael A. Reader, Executive Director Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters 2010

Core Values THE VOICE OF ANGLERS AND HUNTERS 2011-2015 STRATEGIC PLAN Vision Statement A future that includes healthy lakes and forests, bountiful fish and wildlife, and opportunities for all Ontarians to share our passion for hunting, fishing, and conservation. Mission Statement As the voice of anglers and hunters, and as a leader in fish and wildlife conservation in the Province of Ontario, the O.F.A.H. will: strive to ensure the protection of our hunting and fishing heritage and the enhancement of hunting and fishing opportunities; encourage safe and responsible participation; and champion the conservation of Ontario s fish and wildlife resources, which so enrich our lives. As the voice of anglers and hunters, the O.F.A.H. will professionally represent Ontario s anglers and hunters; their hunting and fishing rights and traditions; and their passion for hunting and fishing, and for fish and wildlife conservation. HUNTING AND FISHING HERITAGE The O.F.A.H. supports, and will seek to enhance, Ontario s rich traditions of hunting and fishing, and the quality of life they represent. CONSERVATION The O.F.A.H. will promote, encourage, and seek to ensure the conservation of Ontario s fish and wildlife, their habitats, and the ecosystems that support them, to ensure continuing benefits to anglers and hunters, and by extension, to all people in Ontario. PROACTIVE MANAGEMENT The O.F.A.H. will encourage, conduct and lead proactive fish and wildlife management, individually and in cooperation with others, to ensure the conservation of resources, the protection and enhancement of our hunting and fishing heritage, and the provision of benefits to meet the needs of Ontarians.

Goals To maintain and strengthen membership. To continue funding and delivery of O.F.A.H. conservation programs and services. To increase public and member awareness of what we do. To change the urban mindset and influence as it relates to hunting, fishing, and the legal use of firearms. To improve our ability to raise funds through our membership. To counteract antihunting and antifishing agendas. To develop, maintain and strengthen our donor base. To communicate effectively (for example, the potential complacency and misunderstanding or lack of knowledge by anglers and hunters of the reasons for abundant fish and wildlife populations, and enhanced hunting and fishing opportunities as influenced by the O.F.A.H.). To appropriately participate, via dialogue and other means, in hunting and fishing rights and land claims by First Nations, Métis, and non-status peoples as they relate to the mandate of the O.F.A.H., particularly in situations of limited natural resources To oppose the increasing predisposition of government to get out of conservation, research, and outdoor education program delivery. To effectively manage the business during changes in the economy. To change the negative perception of the image of anglers and hunters by some Ontarians.

To adequately address the issues of deteriorating fish and wildlife resources (e.g. as a result of habitat loss, invasive species, pressures on resources, and other stresses such as climate change). To create a responsive, dedicated and diverse Board of Directors that strongly reflects the needs and goals of our full membership. To communicate the true (O.F.A.H.) meaning of conservation, and address the public s lack of understanding. To expand conservation education at elementary and secondary school levels. To prevent the erosion of hunting and fishing opportunities (total number of opportunities, quality of experience, and variety of experiences). To create and communicate a positive public awareness of the importance of angling and hunting to its participants, their cultural heritage, and the social, ecological and economic benefits for the province as a whole. To work with the media and manage its influence in the reporting of issues relating to hunting, fishing, and the legal use of firearms.
