The Lewis Link David Lewis Public School NOVEMBER 2014 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE By Karen Peach The month of October is always busy around our bustling school. While it brings the end to Cross Country, Slo-Pitch and Kilometre Club it is the beginning of Basketball and Volleyball for our Junior and Intermediate students. Practices are vigorous and the skill level is high! Tournaments will be held in November against other schools and the competition will be fierce! We look forward to following the progress of these fine teams. I thank our coaches who so willingly give up their time to support student skill building and healthy competition! Of course, October sees our students and staff embracing the fun of Hallowe en. Creative writing, pumpkin carving and dressing up as well as a few special sweet treats give pleasure and enjoyment to crisp autumn days. Enjoy the many pictures in this newsletter reflecting special moments and activities enjoyed by our students and staff. On another less happy note unfortunately, parking at school has become a problem for busses picking up and dropping off students that attend alternate school sites. As you have probably seen, pylons have now been placed in our driveway to stop cars from parking around our circle. The circle is a Drop Off Zone only. Cars are not permitted to stop and park. While I regret this inconvenience it was critical that I address this safety issue to keep everyone safe. In advance, I thank everyone for following this new practice. SENIOR SLO-PITCH Slo-Pitch is a sport that is very similar to baseball, but the rules are a bit different. Every team takes turns hitting and fielding. The team who is fielding is trying to catch the ball in the air or tag the runner or touch the base to get the runners out. The team who is batting is trying to hit the ball as far as they can and run as fast as they can to touch all the bases (but not home base in slo-pitch!) In Slo-pitch the ball is yellow and 12 inches, and the pitcher can only do
underhand pitches. You also cannot lead-off or steal bases. Our coaches Mr. Bourne and Mr. Longaphie have been teaching us the skills and rules of Slo-Pitch since the beginning of September. We started to really enjoy and get better after every practise. In the end, the coaches selected 14 boys to compete in our tournament. The tournament was hosted by David Lewis on Thursday, October 23rd. In the first round, we faced two schools, and ended up in second place with one win, and one loss. During the quarter-final we beat Northlea 6-0. We moved on to the semi-final and faced Dublin. It was a close game, but we lost 11-7. We had a great experience and we enjoyed the time we had on the baseball diamond with all the other schools. Congratulations to Brendan, Isaac, Brian, Ryan S, Andrew, Sage, Keano, Billy, Aahad, Henry, Suhas, Justin, Andy, and Kendy for playing very well in the games and showing the great spirit and sportsmanship of our school. Oh, and we can t forget our good luck charm, Tim! By Andy Huang and Justin Griffith, Grade 8 Kindergarten fun!

COMMUNITY BUILDING IN PORTABLE 1 For their Social Studies Unit, the students in Grade 4/5 worked on planning, designing, and building their own communities. As a class, they brainstormed the assets of a community and created a learning goal and success criteria for their project. They played the role of an architect by creating blueprints of their communities. They went on to measuring and collecting a variety of materials. Using their blueprints, they build their communities and are very proud of their hard work! They will move onto advertising and trying to get families to move into their wonderful communities.

FORSYTHE FARM On Friday, October 10 th, my class and I went to visit the Forsythe Farm to continue our study of rural areas. First, we saw the different crops that grow there. We learned that there are female and male pumpkins and we got to pick our own out to take home. Then, we went on a wagon ride to the forest. Along the way we saw areas that were set up as Fairy Tale Lands such as Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. When we were walking through the forest with our guide we saw how animals prepare for hibernation and we had to look for things on our scavenger hunt. Afterwards we had lunch in a little house. Then we went to feed the small animals in the barn. We learned that white chickens lay white eggs and brown chickens lay brown eggs. We got some grass to feed the rabbits, goats and sheep. At the end, we had a picture taken with all of us and our pumpkins.
