We have supported these champions of the recreational anglers cause for many years. Be On The Look Out For Your UKROP S Golden Receipt Points Keep an eye out for the next newsletter from UKROP S Markets. Tucked away in side is notice of the number of points you earned for shopping UKROPS during the Golden Receipt Campaign. Clip and bring the points information to the next meeting or mail the information to the Club. The Club expects to get about $100.00 this year from our receipts, IF THEY ARE REPORTED! Please Keep Your Mailing and E-mail Addresses Current Please keep Mike Ostrander up to date on your latest snail mail and e-mail addresses. As a member, your dues, among other things, entitle you to receipt of the monthly Club Newsletter, The Angler. Usually two or three copies of the mailed newsletter come back with Address Unknown stamped on the front. Returned copies waste our postage and keep you from receiving the latest information about the Club. A change of address notice can be sent to mike@jamesriverfishing.com or 804-938-2350. Captain Ronnie Sides, alias THE LIQUIDATOR Kelly and Mae Stafford have moved to Texas to be near their daughter. As you probably know, Kelly was in the wholesale tackle business for many years. Kelly has turned over his remaining inventory of tackle to Ronnie Sides so Ronnie can liquidate the items for Kelly. If you need some tackle, please contact Ronnie at 276-5985 (H) or (804) 404-2977 (C). Ronnie may be able to match your needs with items from Kelly s remaining inventory and at a considerable savings too. For the Leadership of the Virginia Anglers Club, John Wetlalufer, Sr.

Page 2 CATCHY COMMENTS by Dennis Cline Good news if you are a fish or a duck! We ve got lots of water. This month s rains have kept the rivers high and muddy and delayed our shad fun. Seems like the conditions just about get right and we get another blast of water. In case you didn t know, the National Weather Service has devoted part of their web page to a drought forecast map. So now it is even slower to download than it was before. But, don t worry; we are definitely not in the drought area!! My apologies to the February C.V. Kinnard winners. The following paragraph should have appeared in the March newsletter. Johns Creek swept the Angler of the Month contest! Elly Robinson s 6-8 rainbow trout on 2 fly that scored 866 points was the winner. Fred Cousins took second with an identical entry caught the following day. Third place went to Buddy Noland for his 5-13 rainbow trout on 2 fly that scored 775 points! Congratulations to all!! As you know, the initial contest each year covers the period from December first through the February membership meeting. The March Angler of the Month contest sounds like a rerun! This time, Elly stayed home, but Fred Cousins and Buddy Noland went back to Johns Creek! Fred s 6-2 rainbow on 2-fly for 816 points was the winner. Buddy placed second with a 5-8 rainbow on 2-fly that scored 733 points. Third place went to Dennis Cline for a 6-0 largemouth on 6-plug worth every one of its measly 240 points! There are only a few other freshwater entries to report. Elly Robinson released another carp. This one, a 10-0, was a few ounces short of the club record for 2-plug. Glenn Carter and Stuart Lee tried the blue cats at the end of March. Stuart released a 23-0 on 4 general and Glenn had top rod with a 35-8 on 4 general. Like last year, a lot of members are chasing hickories on the James right now and catches are improving rapidly. But I have no hickory entries to report. I tried my luck on the Nottoway on April 12, and found high water (just under 12 feet) and slow fishing. But, I did land a half dozen Americans to 3-8. Saltwater action is just around the corner, so break out your flounder rigs and dust off your surf rods! If you can t wait any longer, talk to the two Bills. Bill Carter spent a few days at Goodland, Florida catching a variety of species including red drum, ladyfish, snook, seatrout and Spanish mackerel. Bill DuVal added two more club records to his tally. His 4-0 cero mackerel on 6 general and his 5-8 cero on 8 general were caught at Key West. Kelly Stafford Hits The Trail To Texas Kelly and Mae Stafford have found it necessary to leave the Richmond area and now are residing near their daughter, Martha Hermann, in Arlington, Texas. Members of the will surely miss his angling competence, wonderful good nature and total devotion to the Virginia Anglers Club. Considering all of his contributions to the, Kelly was awarded Life Membership in the Virginia Anglers by the Board of Directors at the April BOD Meeting. Kelly has been a member since 1981. Kelly and Ronnie Sides father were long time friends and, through this friendship and Ronnie s urging, Kelly joined the, becoming one of the most loved members of our club. Kelly s new address and phone number (both being Martha s home) is as follows: Kelly Stafford C/O Martha Herman, 5500 Yucca Court Arlington, TX 76017 Martha s e-mail account is mesh723@yahoo.com (please try not to overload this account with e-mail, as it is Martha s personal e-mail account). Elsewhere in the edition of the Angler, you will find information on Ronnie s efforts to liquidate Kelly s remaining stock of fishing tackle, etc. DuVals Receive Well Deserved Angling Recognition Martha s home phone is 817-516-7879 and her cell phone is 817-235-6701. The DuVals again prove that if you stick with it, you will catch noteworthy fish. Earlier this month, the IGFA recognized Bill and wife Gene as catching the second most World Record fish on fly tackle in 2004. This is an annual award that recognizes the male and the female IGFA anglers worldwide who catch the three highest totals of World Record fish in fly tackle. Gene, one of Virginia s IGFA Representatives, was inducted in April into the International Women s Fishing Association Hall of Fame. The induction was held at IGFA Headquarters and was made during the IWFA s 50th Anniversary Banquet. Gene has been a member of the IWFA since 1973.

I was introduced to hunting and fishing early on by my Dad. We mostly did bottom fishing on the Rappahannock and Ware Rivers for spot, croaker and trout. No sport fishing here...this was for dinner! We also did some "pike" (chain pickerel) fishing walking the banks of the Dragon Run casting daredevil spoons and homemade Mepps Spinners. My most memorable moment was made at a little pond just up the road from my home. One hot afternoon just before dark I rode my bike there to go fishing. On my first cast with a Jitterbug I caught my biggest bass to date...probably about 4 lbs. On my second cast another about the same size. My third cast was across the pond to a tree top. This was when it happened. This bass met the lure in mid air. Imagine the sound of those two treble hooks landing in that big hard mouth. I will never forget the rattling sound that it made. I was so proud of myself that I jumped on my bike to go home and show off my catch. Three cast and three bass all about 4 lbs. each. My dad made some remark about "leaving the fish bitting". Lesson learned. Boats: Mirror Craft 18ft. Jon Boat with a 60HP Johnson. Specialty: Not sure I have one. I really enjoy the late fall fishing on the Pamunkey river, surf fishing the barrier Islands and ocean wreck fishing. I like the variety. Fishing Preferences: Always interested in catching a specie that I have never caught before. Hopefully someday a tarpon on the fly rod. Notable Fishing Accomplishments: My first Freshwater Presidents cup was won with a 8-9 catfish on 4 Spin, 428 points back in 1981. My second Freshwater Presidents cup was won with a 45-0 Blue Catfish on 4 Gen, 692 points in 1999. I believe this was the first blue cat over 40 lbs. on 4# line that was entered into the. Funny how things change with time! Membership Goals: Would love to see the new members of find the fishing knowledge and friendships that I have within the club.
