PLYMOUTH SCHOOLS INFORMATION PACK The High Sports climbing wall in the Plymouth Life Centre is a state of the art indoor climbing facility built in 2012 and one of the largest indoor venues in the South West. 50 rope lines on 6m, 8m, 12m, and 16m high walls. Feature wall modelled on the granite of Dartmoor to give realistic feel of actual rock. Huge bouldering facility with over 100 problems. Regular route turn-over new routes or boulders every week. Slabs, flat walls and overhangs make up a varied climbing surface ensuring that there really is something for everyone. Aerial Obstacle Course above the bouldering wall provides an extra challenge. Wheelchair accessible. Climbing provides an amazing sporting activity that is rewarding at all levels. It can include, but does not require inter-participant competition. Climbing is not dependent on hand-eye co-ordination. It teaches and develops balance, flexibility and agility. Climbing encourages teamwork, participation, and support. Climbing includes problem-solving and Personal & Social development. Staff hold NGB awards from the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and Mountain Training and have a wealth of experience of working with clients of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. The wall is a full member of the Association of British Climbing Walls.

Plymouth Schools Climbing Competition Every year we host a round of the South West Region - British Youth Climbing Series. In 2015 three local climbers (aged 7, 12 and 17) made the British Finals! Give your pupils the chance to test themselves on the BRYCS routes and boulders in this special schools competition. Following the competition rules of the International Federation of Sport Climbing, this is a great opportunity for pupils to experience the thrill of a professional comp! Competing in 4 age categories (Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10), boys and girls will attempt 3 routes and 3 boulder problems over the course of a full day at the wall. To ensure pupils from all over the city can participate, each school will be initially limited to entering only one team (one boy and one girl into each category). If numbers allow, additional entries may be allowed later in the winter term. In the interests of fairness, pupils who competed in our round of the BRYCS will not be able to compete, however they are more than welcome to attend with their school to coach and support their classmates! Feb 2016 (date tbc once British Mountaineering Council confirms dates for BRYCS). 80.00 per team of 8 competitors. ( 10.00 per additional competitor if numbers allow) Internal school competitions. Want a climbing competition for Year 7 tutor groups? Individuals in GCSE PE classes? Inter-House competitions? We can design and deliver a bespoke competition within the School Discounted Instructed Group framework and can include team-work, knot tying, and other climbing skills in the scoring too, so even those less keen on climbing can score points. HIGH SPORTS PLYMOUTH

Inclusive Climbing There are many perceived barriers to adventurous activities; however we have never turned a participant away because they can t do anything. Among the staff we have a wealth of experience and passion for delivering climbing to everyone. We are able to work with participants who use chairs, have visual, hearing or cognitive impairments, or have additional learning needs. By the very nature of client s needs, we often need to know a bit about the participants before we can devise a bespoke package, however we are confident that we can deliver something for everyone. We are fortunate to have a Changing Places facility within the centre. Please feel free to contact us to discuss a bespoke package, or if you have any queries about accessible climbing. GB Athlete, Alex Waterhouse We sponsor Team GB athlete, Alex Waterhouse, a local climber who began his climbing career in a Plymouth School climbing club and is now the Vice Captain on the GB Youth Bouldering Team and member of the Senior GB Climbing Team. He fits a normal life and school around intensive training, climbing for pleasure, and competing around the world. He has crowd-funded his way to an international event in New Caledonia, runs Tiny Climb his own chalk bag manufacturing company, and sill finds time to be regularly involved with our Junior Clubs, assist with coaching our Squad Climbers, as well as supporting Junior and Adult competitors at competitions. He is available to talk in school assemblies about his climbing by arrangement. Bespoke is best You know your pupils best! If there is anything we need to know to deliver a better experience to your pupils, or if you have particular requirements regarding session content, duration, and instruction, we would be very happy to discuss this with you. You are welcome to visit the wall, to see the facility and discuss sessions with the Centre Manager, or we can arrange a time to visit you at your school. You can contact the Plymouth Wall by phone or e-mail, or just call in to see us at the Plymouth Life Centre. We look forward to seeing you and your pupils soon!
