SCHOOL MUSICAL IN FULL SWING The talented performing arts students from St Ives School are currently rehearsing for their first whole school production since 2002! In June, a cast of 35 are performing the classic, colourful and captivating musical, Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr. Students from Year 7 through to Year 9 will be singing, dancing and acting as well as helping with costumes, make-up and the technical support. Performance evenings are Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th June. Tickets are on sale from St Ives School reception; adults 4 and children (under 11) 2. St Ives School have celebrated a triumphant win for the School Pop Choir. The Choir received a distinction at this year s Cornwall Music Festival and came first in their category, winning the Woolmington Shield. This was the first time the Choir have entered a competition, having recently formed in September 2016. The choir were so excited with their win that they are already planning for next year! Other ensembles from St Ives Music Department also achieved success at the competition. The School Samba Band was awarded a Distinction and It was amazing! We re looking forward to competing again next year! 2 nd place in their category. The Flute Quartet, consisting of four of the school s most talented flute players received a Commended as did the Ukulele Ensemble and School Band. The Music Festival showcases instrumental talent from across Cornwall, with some students travelling from as far as the Isles of Scilly to compete. The music entries were diverse, including performances from Baroque ensembles to saxophone quartets. St Ives students were inspired by the event and motivated to further develop their musicianship. 2 ST IVES SCHOOL NEWS
SUNNY DONALDSON FOR YOUTH PARLIMENT WORLD BOOK DAY 2017 Congratulations to Sunny in Year 9, who has been elected to the post of Deputy Member of Youth Parliament for West Cornwall. He would like to thank the students and staff of St. Ives who supported him in his campaign and turned out in such high numbers to vote on the day of the election. He is looking forward to working with the Parliament on behalf of Cornish students everywhere. Students at St Ives School had a record breaking World Book Day this year when they set a new record for the number of people simultaneously reading in one venue at the School. Students from all years gathered in the Hall and read silently while representatives from the Guinness Book of Reading, flown in specially to adjudicate, kept a careful tally of the readers on their clipboards. Across both sessions, an incredible 378 students were counted, their heads buried in their books for the stipulated time. Students, teachers, and of course the representatives from the Guinness Book of Reading were all moved by that best of all sound: the sound of reading. During the week of World Book Day, there were other events in the school, including a book fair and assemblies to students to celebrate the importance of reading. 3

Two pupils from Year Nine travelled to Birmingham last week to receive their prizes in the Alu D&T Challenge, a competition for 11-14 year olds. In the Innovative Packaging Solution category, St. Ives pupil Ethan, Year 9 won the individual prize and Nick, Year 9 was named as runner-up for his design. The talented young designers have won a 3D printer and 3D pens for the school s Design & Tec hnol ogy Department, plus vouchers for themselves. They received their prizes at an awards ceremony held at, Birmingham Science Museum s Thinktank. The Alu 5 ST IVES SCHOOL NEWS D&T Challenge is a national competition for secondary school pupils, linked to the Design and Technology curriculum at Key Stage 3. It teaches pupils about the material properties and sustainability potential of aluminium by challenging them to design a sustainable product for the future using aluminium. This year s competition set individual and te a m chall enges bas ed on real-life briefs faced by designers, engineers and manufacturers in three categories transport, building and packaging. Judging took place in two stages, reducing over 200 entries to a final shortlist of 30: the final winners were chosen by senior figures from the aluminium industry, and specialists in engineering and architecture. Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Diana Caldwell from competition organisers the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) said: I think the judging panel may have had the privilege of seeing some of the first work to be produced by our country s next generation of engineers, designers and materials scientists. These are the people who will make a difference to industry in the future. All of the judges were impressed by the high quality of the entries and there was some intense debate during the process to select the winners. A carefully planned programme of lessons, activities and support helped to shine a spotlight on bullying and encourage all schools, children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying throughout the year. Squad 21, our student anti-bullying leaders, were located in E5 during Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunch times and organised competitions, activities and support for students. ST IVES SCHOOL NEWS 5
www.st-ives.cornwall.sch.uk As part of National Science Week, Miss Charlesworth has been visiting our partner primary schools to run a series of fascinating Science workshops. The students in Year 5 and 6 from Nancledra and St Erth, as well as the Year 6 students from St Uny got hands-on experience dissecting hearts and about learning how the heart functions. To celebrate Science Week, a hair-raising assembly about static 6 ST IVES SCHOOL NEWS electricity was delivered to each primary school. There were a range of demonstrations with the help from some volunteers which included the Van de Graaf generator, a plasma ball and a Jedi levitator! The students thoroughly enjoyed the show and taking part in the activities. It is always a pleasure to meet the next generation of budding young scientists and to inspire them.
THE SOURCE OF A SONG ENGLISH HPA SESSION On 2 nd and 9 th March we welcomed Toni Carver, Editor of the St Ives Times and Echo, to talk to some of our Year 8 and Year 9 students about ostensibly very different subjects: song writing and journalism. What Toni wanted to show students was that both forms of writing try to encapsulate something in words whether it be the exact details of a specific event (journalism) or an emotion (song writing). Toni used the folk tradition as a vehicle to encourage students to consider the two genres: by looking at the tragedy of the loss of the Gorah Lass in 1997 an event he reported on personally and then a folk song he had subsequently written on the disaster - he was able to guide the students to an understanding of the different skills required by a successful writer of each genre. It was interesting to see how much overlap there actually was in terms of content. Students were then encouraged to write some lyrics for their own song on an event of their choice drawing on the knowledge they had gained. St Ives School is celebrating its aspiring photographers after 9 students entered the Rotary Clubs Young Photographers Competition. The standard was extremely high with a widely varied style of image. After much deliberation from the judges, Lamorna, Year 9 and Alex, Year 9 will go on to the next round. To celebrate the amazing feat of endurance and resilience shown by Lieutenant William Bligh and his crew when they were set adrift in a 23-foot launch following the mutiny on the Bounty, the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth commissioned an exhibit bringing together the facts and stories of that 3600 mile journey. Involved in this from the start were 12 Y7 students from St Ives School who - as part of their Pegasus Award - researched the story of Bligh using a range of secondary and - quite remarkably - primary sources to unpick the true story of Bligh's extraordinary journey. The students developed key learning skills including planning, organisation, teamwork and the ability to question existing perspectives. The films made by Hollywood were all based on the diaries of a mutineer and so students were introduced to the importance of presenting balanced arguments with evidence and without the danger of bias. As a result of their work, participants found that the true story of Bligh was very different to the popular myth. 2 ST IVES SCHOOL NEWS
During the project, the students learned the key principles of film production by working with Falmouth-based professional film company DogBite Films who are involved in the production of Poldark and Doc Marten. They also had a day afloat with the crew of The Penlee Lifeboat who staged a mock rescue for them in the middle of a very bouncy Mounts Bay: memories that will stay with the students for a very long time. This was all made possible thanks to the Pegasus Award and the team at TfL Training who always endeavour to provide learning opportunities which challenge and stimulate learners whilst developing skills which can be transferred back into the classroom. This season has seen our Girls Football teams really take off. We have seen some brilliant matches with fantastic team and individual performances. Our results so far are as follows: YEAR 7 Friendly. COUNTY FOOTBALL CUP What a month for the football teams! The Year 7 and 8 boys both played against Penryn College in the County Cup and had to cope with playing away on an artificial pitch. The Year 8 s put in a solid performance and were 0-0 at half time. The Year 7 s had a real nail biter and with the scores level after regulation time, and still level after extra time, it went to penalties. The tension finally ended when Jago stroked home the winner to take the tie for St Ives. Richard Lander were the next opponents and the Year 7 boys were very unlucky not to progress. Students in Year 10 attended a production of Huckleberry Finn performed by the acclaimed Spanish touring company Firewalk. The performance took place at Truro College and was entirely in Spanish. Students particularly enjoyed the creative use of props and masks which enabled the two actors to take on a variety of roles. Despite finding the dialogue challenging to follow in places; students were able to pick out words and phrases which they will look to use in their own written work. GIRLS FOOTBALL The Year 7 girls football team have also been making excellent progress with a great performance in a friendly tournament at Mounts Bay. With 2 wins from 3 matches the girls came away full of confidence and continue to improve their skills each match they play. 10 ST IVES SCHOOL NEWS Jenna, Year 11 has continued her netball success this season. She plays netball for Storm Netball Club, Carn Brea, and as a team member of the U16 qualifying team for the South West Regional League (Division 2) they had their final game in Taunton, and they smashed it 55-27. As a result, they have been undefeated; winning every division games throughout the season and are now the winners of the league. A great end to their season. Well done to Jenna for becoming a regional Division 2 champion.
SPORT HPA STUDENTS SUPPORT PLYMOUTH RAIDERS The Year 7 and 8 Sports HPA students attended a trip to see the Plymouth Raiders basketball team, to experience the atmosphere and standard of performance at a professional game. The atmosphere was superb. The crowd gave full support to the home side, with the St Ives students leading the cheers. The Raiders put on a brilliant display of basketball to beat the rivals - Bristol Flyers by 25 points. To finish the evening, our students got the chance to meet the players on the court and collect autographs. Can we do this again, it s so cool? was a common question that summed up a very successful and enjoyable event. Basketball club is on every Monday lunchtime in the gym. SOCIAL MEDIA At St Ives School, we understand how the rules of social media can appear cryptic at times. The apps that our students use change so often, it can feel hard to keep up. Students can access and can be accessed by others through social media and it can be a challenge to ensure they're safe. This image, recently shared by Devon and Cornwall Police, shows the join up ages for the most popular social media apps with our students. If your child is using these apps, they must have entered a date of birth to show them as old enough to use the site. As with films and gaming, the age restriction is there to help keep students safe from inappropriate comments.
