Chicago Cubs (1-1) vs. Miami Marlins (1-1) March 31, 2018 Marlins Park Game No. 3 Road Game No. 3 RHP Yu Darvish (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (0-0, 0.00) THAT S CLASSIFIED AS A LONG NIGHT AT THE YARD: The Chicago Cubs tonight play the third of four games against the Miami Marlins after last night dropping a 2-1, 17-inning marathon that lasted five hours, 18 minutes both teams plated single runs in the third before being held scoreless until the 17th inning when Miami s Miguel Rojas singled home Brian Anderson to bring the marathon to an end. The 17-inning affair came in the teams second game of the season according to Elias, the only instance in major league history of teams playing a game as long as 17 innings in either their first of second game of a campaign came on April 9, 1969, when the Royals defeated the Twins, 4-3 in 17 innings, in what was the second game of the season for each team (and the second in franchise history for the Royals). DARVISH DEBUT: Righthander Yu Darvish tonight makes his Cubs debut after signing a six-year deal with the club in February since 2012 with the Rangers and Dodgers, he ranks first among all pitchers in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (11.04), and ranks fourth in both hits allowed per 9.0 innings (7.29) and opponent batting average against (.219). Darvish tonight becomes the eighth Japanese-born player to appear for the Cubs and the fifth pitcher he will join right-handed pitchers Kyuji Fujikawa and Koji Uehara, left-handed pitchers Hisanori Takahashi and Tsuyoshi Wada, infielder Munenori Kawasaki and outfielders Kosuke Fukudome and So Taguchi. Darvish looks to become the first starting pitcher to earn a victory in his Cubs debut since, well, just last July José Quintana did so, July 16 at Baltimore, a gem in which he spun 7.0 shutout frames in an 8-0 victory after coming over from the White Sox three days earlier. DOING YEOMAN S WORK: Cubs reliever Eddie Butler last night tossed 7.0 innings of relief after entering the game with one on and two out in the 10th Butler held Miami scoreless through the 16th inning, and threw 90 pitches, before he was replaced by Brandon Morrow with two on and two out in the 17th. All told, Butler allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out five in his 7.0 innings he s the first Cubs reliever to toss at least 7.0 innings and surrender no more than four hits and one run since Ray Burris on September 23, 1973 at Philadelphia Burris spun 7.0 shutout frames, allowing four hits, in a 9-7 setback. In fact, Butler is the first Cubs reliever to go at least 7.0 innings since Scott Sanderson tossed 8.0 innings, August 6, 1989 at Pittsburgh in a 5-4, 18-inning defeat. PENMANSHIP: Last night s run allowed in the 17th inning snapped a seasonopening 15.2-scoreless innings streak by Chicago s bullpen that s the longest scoreless innings streak by the Cubs bullpen to begin a campaign since 1990, when the relief corps strung together 20.0-scoreless thanks to Elias Sports Bureau. EFFICIENCY: Kris Bryant last night went 3-for-6 and belted his first homer of the year, a go ahead solo shot in the third the blast came in his sixth at-bat of the season, by far the quickest he s gone deep to start a campaign. Bryant last season first homered in his 40th at-bat in his 11th game played in 2016, his first blast came on his 32nd at-bat in his eighth game while his first homer in his N.L. Rookie of the Year 2015 season came in his 40th at-bat in his 11th game played. RUMINATIONS REGARDING HOME RUNS: Chicago has hit four homers within its first two season contests for just the fifth time in the last 30 years, most previously done in 2016 the Cubs also turned the trick in 2006, 1996 and 1988. Each of the first four Cubs home runs hit this season have been of the solo variety, the first time that s been the case since 1994 when Chicago s first five homers were solo blasts. CURRENT EVENTS: This is the third of a four-game set against the Marlins to begin the 2018 campaign following a matinee tomorrow, the team heads to Cincinnati for two games at the Reds following an off day on Wednesday in Chicago, this trip continues with four games in Milwaukee through next Sunday. The Cubs have opened the year 1-1 for the second straight season in the last 23 years since 1996, the team has started either 1-1 or 0-2 through the first two games in 22 of those campaigns, the lone exception is the 2016 Cubs squad that began that season 3-0. JOE MADDON AT THE HELM: Joe Maddon is in his fourth season as manager of the Cubs and has led the Cubs to the postseason in each of his first three seasons at the helm, including consecutive N.L. Central Division titles and the 2016 World Series he is the 54th manager in Cubs history, and this is his 44th season in pro ball, his 25th at the major league level and 13th as a major league manager. Maddon is a three-time BBWAA Manager of the Year Award winner, having earned the honor in 2008 and 2011 with Tampa Bay and in 2015 with Chicago he is one of six managers to win the award in both leagues, joining Tony LaRussa, Bobby Cox, Jim Leyland, Lou Piniella and Bob Melvin. Maddon previously managed the Tampa Bay Rays for nine seasons from 2006-14, leading the club to four post-season appearances (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013) and winning the A.L. pennant in 2008. Maddon spent 18 years in the Angels organization as a minor league roving hitting instructor (1987-93), major league bullpen coach (1994), major league first base coach (1995) and major league bench coach (1996-2005) that included two interim managerial stints in 1996 and 1999. ROAD WARRIORS: The Cubs open the 2018 campaign with 10-straight road games (four in Miami, two in Cincinnati, four in Milwaukee) prior to their home opener, April 9 vs. Pittsburgh this is the first time in 119 years in which Chicago opens a season with at least 10- straight road games the 1899 Cubs played 12-straight road games to begin the season, a trip in which they went 7-5 at Louisville, Cincinnati and St. Louis. Since the start of the 2015 season, Chicago leads the majors with 139 road victories and a.572 road winning percentage (139-104). BUSY BODIES: Since the start of the 2015 campaign, the Cubs have played 524 games between the regular season (488) and postseason (36), the most of any big league club (Dodgers are second with 519 combined games and the Astros are third with 512). NEW FACES IN 2018: The Cubs have four players on the Opening Day 25-man active roster that were not with the organization in 2017: pitchers Tyler Chatwood (free agent), Steve Cishek (free agent), Yu Darvish (free agent) and Brandon Morrow (free agent).
