Smart Coach Program Impact on ADHD Child Could one of these be your child? This program really changed my boy who is now less impulsive and more focused. He can concentrate and is able to complete his homework These days, he is much more manageable and calmer. I enjoy being with him! He doesn t bounce all over the place anymore! His tendency to over-react has subsided. He seems less impulsive and interruptive She seems more focused and vibrant with her expressions. He certainly is less aggressive and argumentative. He doesn t argue with me as much. He seems more respectful. She shows improvement in self-confidence and awareness of her surroundings. He certainly has shown improvement with attention span, personal management, and memory. The truth is when your child is NOT breaking the rules, s/he is being successful. This is the time to give your energy and relationship to your child. CELEBRATE THE ORDINARY MOMENTS! Believe that change is possible! 5
Smart Coach Martial Art Difference MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES At Smart Coach, our primary focus is to utilize martial arts as a tool to instill the skills of focus, respect, discipline, confidence and goal setting needed for excellence in the classroom. Excellence in the classroom is a strong indicator for success in life. In partnership with parents, we will take an active interest in our student s academic performance, as well as their behavior at home and at school, as part of their belt advancement. As our students succeed on the training floor and in the classroom, this will increase their self-esteem leading to a well-balanced individual. As a well-balanced individual will make the correct choices, such as, respecting their parents and family, choosing to achieve good grades at school and taking leadership initiatives. We are employing martial arts to develop leaders in the classroom and on into adult life. We are developing Leaders in Life. At Smart Coach, we truly believe that every child can succeed when provided with the proper skills and training. Smart Coach Martial Arts Emphasis on Academic Performance The SmartCoach system is designed to stimulate the brain as well as the body by employing proprietary SmartBrain moves designed to stimulate, oxygenate and develop the brain which empowers our martial arts students to succeed in the classroom. We also utilize SNAPSHOT moments to encourage our students to do their best in the classroom, at home, and in the community. SNAPSHOT moments are the ordinary moments when the students are working hard and being themselves. We encourage parents to recognize these moments when adversity is not happening. This is to purposefully choose to energize success, as children respond best when consequences are minimal and success is rewarded with great energy. We recognize these SNAPSHOT moments to motivate our students to make good choices. Our martial arts students also receive all the other benefits of traditional martial arts training, such as strength, flexibility, perseverance, character, self-defense and of course FUN! Uniform: The white uniform is the standard uniform for students. In Stage two you are eligible to wear a red uniform. Black Belts are eligible to wear white, red and black uniforms. Certified instructors are eligible to wear blue uniforms as well as the other colors. Uniforms must always have uniform patches and always be clean and odor free. 6
Patches: Patches for your uniform; 1. American Flag centered on the right arm, ½ inch below shoulder seam 2. Korean flag centered on the left arm, ½ inch below shoulder seam, with the red crest on top). Both Flag patches are earned when you memorize the Student Creed. 3. Belt patch (placed on right shoulder area of uniform) is earned when you demonstrate that you can tie your own belt. 4. Star Patches on the lapel of the collar. These are earned for good work on the training mats and in the community. 7 1 3 4 2 Smart Coach Martial Arts Instructors At Smart Coach, your child is taught and coached by the people who truly lead by example. Most of our Smart Coach black belt instructors/coaches are college graduates and many have terminal degrees such as a Ph.D. in intellectually challenging academic areas. Some of our black belt instructors have professorial experience at major universities. Our coaches all share one thing in common: They love working with children and helping them succeed in life. As martial arts instructors at Smart Coach, they are trained to inspire your child to worthy aspirations especially academics. Having good role models is important in the development of a child. Your child s journey to success starts with guidance and support from a respected adult role model who will advise the child to know exactly what is expected of him or her. Children generally will strive to accomplish the expectations communicated by the adult they admire or respect. At the Smart Coach Center, your child is truly in good hands 7
Practicing at Home: Practicing at home is vital for the student to progress in martial arts training. 80% of what a person learns is directly attributed to the amount of time he/she spends taking what they learned in class and practicing it at home. All you need is a little space and as little as 10 minutes a day. Not having enough space or time is no excuse not to practice!! Some of the activities, such as stretching and balancing, can be done while you are spending time watching TV! The best time to practice would be before dinner or as a study break from homework. Remember the saying, "Perfect practice makes perfect." If you are not sure about any of these activities please ask your instructor. Practice takes discipline and for it to be effective, you must develop a habit of practicing. Start today and monitor your progress for 21 days straight, by then you should have developed a habit of practicing. Sparring and Protective Equipment: Due to mandatory insurance regulations, protective padding is required for the feet, hands, shins, ribs, and head, as well as a mouth guard. A groin cup is also required for ALL male students. School policy requires that only APPROVED equipment be worn. This equipment can be purchased from the studio. It is a requirement that ALL students in Stage II (green belt and above) have all their sparring gear. All sparring activities must be supervised by a Smart Coach Center Tae Kwon Do Black Belt instructor. CENTER POLICY REQUIRES STUDENTS TO WEAR SMART COACH GEAR ONLY!! White & Gold Belts: Belt Stretcher, hand gear (chops) and foot gear (kicks) & mouth guard. Green Belt: Shin guards, chest guard, groin Cup (males) and head Gear Please be sure to label all your equipment with a permanent marker. Korean Commands: Chario "Move to Attention" Han "One" Kyoung Nay "Bow" (For Respect) Du "Two" Shio "At Ease" Se "Three" Junbi "Ready Stance" Ne "Four" Sijaghada "Begin" daseos "Five" Goman "End" yeoseos "Six" Dojang "Tae Kwon Do School" Ilgob "Seven" Tae Kwon Do "The way of the foot and hand" Yeodul "Eight Diro Dorah "Turn" Ahob "Nine" Doh bok "Uniform" Yeol "Ten" Yeolhan Eleven Yeoldu twelve 8
What are the Stripes? BELT STRIPES The stripe system was developed to help make sure your child succeeds not just in Tae Kwon Do, but outside as well. The system s goal is to help develop positive life skills that are transferable from the Tae Kwon Do class to home and school. Stripes are a great way to build your child s self-esteem as well as help them build a positive attitude. This is one way Smart Coach Tae Kwon Do uses positive reinforcement in your child s development. Curriculum Stripes Blue Stripe - Basics/Combinations Yellow Stripe - Forms Green Stripe - Sparring or sparring drills (Blocks & Counters) Red Stripe - Technical Kick, Basic Stances, Balance & Stretching Testing Stripe White Stripe When the instructor informs you that you are ready to test (testing list), you will be asked to demonstrate the curriculum to earn your next belt. If you proficiently demonstrate the curriculum for your next belt, you will be awarded your white stripe. Personal Development Stripes Black Belt Attitude Stripe (Junior) Junior students earn Black Belt Attitude stripes by making good choices. For example, this stripe will be awarded when the student brings in an exam in which they earned an outstanding grade by applying diligent study habits. Alternatively, the student may turn in a note from home describing something positive they have done to show great attitude (saying Yes Sir/Ma am, completing chores without being asked, etc.) The exam or note should be turned in with their class card. The note will be read in front of the whole class and they will be awarded a stripe in front of their peers. The instructor may also give a student this stripe when they show great attitude in class or significant improvement in a certain skill. Black Belt Attitude Stripe (Adults) Most successful individuals set and achieve goals. These individuals write down their goals and put them in a place where they look at them EVERYDAY, so they may not lose track of them. In order to help adult students, become more successful, they will earn Black Belt Attitude stripes by writing down a goal in bringing it into the instructor. They should also write their goal down and place it in a place where they look at it EVERYDAY. When the adult student achieves their goal, they will be awarded a stripe in front of their peers. After a student has received all their stripes for their program (including 2 black belt attitude stripes) and completed the minimum number of classes, he/she has earned the privilege to test for their next belt. 9
Rank Advancement & Graduations: Testing is generally held every three months. You will always be notified when you are nearing your test date (testing list). Students who pass the test for their yellow belt or higher rank, will receive their belt during a formal studio graduation ceremony. During testing week and at the formal graduation ceremony, all testing students must where their full uniform. The rank registration fee for belts from Yellow Belt through Brown Belt is $60, The rank registration fees are payable to You Can Do It, LLC (testing fees are subject to change without notice). The rank registration fee and rank registration form (posted on website under Forms) are due at least one week prior to the formal studio graduation ceremony, or as specified by the Chief Instructor, to graduate to your next belt level. At the formal studio graduation ceremony, the student will receive a belt and diploma. The Black Belt exam is a separate event conducted with the Black Belt candidates. Tae Kwon Do Notebook: It is required that all students keep a Tae Kwon Do notebook (like a progress report of his/her progress in the program). It should contain this manual, ALL curriculum sheets and your graduation diplomas. 10
