III) and Glouster Trimble (Div. VII). Only three of the 14 state finalists are making a return trip to Canton from the 2017 state championship games. Akron Archbishop Hoban is looking to defend its Division II crown, and the Division VI state final is a rematch of last year s state championship game between Kirtland and Maria Stein Marion Local (won by Marion Local, 34-11). Still Perfect Five teams will look to cap off a perfect 15-0 season this weekend in Canton, as Cin. Colerain (Div. I), Massillon Washington (Div. II), Akron Archbishop Hoban (Div. II), Cin. Wyoming (Div. IV) and Kirtland (Div. VI) all remain unbeaten. The Div. II state championship game is the only matchup between two undefeated teams. Finalists by Final State Rank Of the 14 state finalists, 11 appeared in the final Associated Press state poll (all but Girard in Div. IV, Orrville in Div. V and Glouster Trimble in Div. VII). Five of the seven teams that won poll championships are still playing, including Cin. Colerain (Div. I), Akron Archbishop Hoban (Div. II), Kettering Archbishop Alter (Div. III), Cin. Wyoming (Div. IV) and Kirtland (Div. VI). The final AP polls appear on page 8 of this packet. Last year, three teams ranked No. 1 in the final poll went on to win a state title Trotwood-Madison (Div. III), Steubenville (Div. IV) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI). The last unranked team to win a state title was Minster in Division VII in 2017. Last year, three teams ranked No. 1 in the final poll went on to win a state title Trotwood-Madison (Div. III), Steubenville (Div. IV) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI). Strength of Schedule Four state finalists defeated a total of four playoff teams during the regular season, tied for the most of any team in the state championship games in all divisions: - Cin. Colerain: Cin. St. Xavier (14-12 in Week 2), Mason (42-7 in Week 7), Liberty Twp. Lakota East (42-0 in Week 8), Fairfield (55-27 in Week 9) - Cin. Wyoming: Cin. Taft (14-12 in Week 2), Cin. Hills Christian Acad. (33-10 in Week 3), Cin. Deer Park (44-7 in Week 6), Cin. Madeira (70-0 in Week 7), Cin. Indian Hill (37-7 in Week 10) - Orrville: Lexington (57-21 in Week 3), Massillon Tuslaw (35-0 in Week 5), Cuy. Valley Christian Acad. (37-34 in Week 6), Loudonville (48-14 in Week 7) - Marion Local: Patrick Henry (42-7 in Week 2), Anna (44-20 in Week 5), St. Henry (28-7 in Week 6), Minster (7-6 in Week 8) State Finalists by Regional Seed The Division II and Division V finals are the only matchups that feature teams that were a No. 1 seed in their respective regions. In Division I, Lakewood St. Edward is looking to become just the third No. 7 regional seed since 1999 to win a state title (Cle. St. Ignatius in 2001 & Piqua in 2006). The following seeds have advanced to the state finals: No. 1 seed 7 (Colerain, Hoban, Massillon, Alter, Wyoming, Orrville, Johnstown-Monroe) No. 2 seed 2 (Kenston, Kirtland) No. 3 seed 2 (Marion Local, Trimble) No. 4 seed 0 No. 5 seed 2 (Girard, McComb) No. 6 seed 0 No. 7 seed 1 (St. Edward) No. 8 seed 0 In the Beginning to Seven Divisions When the OHSAA created the football playoffs in 1972, there were three divisions (called Class A, AA and AAA) and only one playoff qualifier per region (12 total playoff qualifiers). Now in its 46th year, the postseason has expanded to seven divisions and 224 total playoff qualifiers. Expansion occurred in 1980 to five divisions and two qualifiers per region, and then again in 1985 to four qualifiers per region. In 1994, a sixth division was added, while in 1999, the number of qualifiers per region increased to eight. The playoffs expanded to seven divisions in 2013. OHSAA Football by the Numbers 717 High schools in Ohio that played football in 2018 7 Divisions for the playoffs 28 Total Regions (4 per division) 8 Playoff qualifiers per region 32 Playoff qualifiers per division 224 Total playoff qualifiers 31.2 Percentage of football playing schools that qualify 72 Schools in Division I 108 Average number of schools in Division II through VII Noting the Undefeated and the.500 Only 24 teams across Ohio went undefeated during the regular-season, which is the second-fewest in the playoff era (since 1972 - only 22 teams went undefeated in 2015). In the first round of the playoffs, 20 of those undefeated teams won, including three on the road, including Garfield Heights (Div. II, 5 seed in Region 5), McDonald (Div. VI, 5 seed in Region 21) and Pandora Gilboa (Div. VII, 6 seed in Region 26). Also of note, a record 11 teams with 5-5 records qualified for the playoffs this year. Only one of those 5-5 teams, Warren John F. Kennedy in Division VII, won their regional quarterfinal game. JFK reached the regional finals. About the Regionals, State Semifinals and Neutral Sites The regional playoffs follow bracket format, beginning with the regional quarterfinals. Regional Quarterfinals (Nov. 2 and 3): During the first round, the higher seed hosts the game at its home stadium or the stadium of its choosing. The No. 8 seed will play at the No. 1 seed, the No. 7 seed at No. 2, etc. NEUTRAL SITES: Regional Semifinals (Nov. 9 and10), Regional Finals (Nov. 16 and 17) and State Semifinals (Nov. 23 and 24): Neutral sites are selected by the OHSAA. There are many factors that go into determining playoff sites, such as quality of field surface, seating capacity, quality of lighting, size of locker rooms and distance from field, press box size, parking, and a separate locker room for officials. After all those factors are taken into consideration, it must be confirmed that the site is available and willing to host a playoff game on the date needed. The OHSAA cannot mandate that a specific site be available and it is rare to have an available site exactly halfway between the two competing schools. Host sites keep revenue from concession stands and parking and they also receive a predetermined rental fee from the OHSAA, which covers game expenses. Proving the Pollsters, Part 2 Of the 56 schools that advanced to the regional finals, 37 were ranked in the Top 10 of their division in the final Associated Press state poll. The match-ups of highest ranked teams came in Division V and VI. In Division V, it was No. 2-ranked Middletown Madison vs. No. 3 Wheelersburg. In Division VI, No. 2 Coldwater met No. 3 Maria Stein Marion Local. Also in Division VI, No. 1-ranked Kirtland faced No. 4-ranked Mogadore. All 70 teams that were ranked in the final AP poll qualified for the playoffs and they went 59-11 in the first round. Of note, In Division VII, Leipsic knocked off AP No. 1 Sycamore Mohawk, 40-14, in Region 26. In Division III, Thornville Sheridan defeated AP No. 2 Bellbrook, 27-19, in Region 10. In 2017, all 70 teams ranked in the AP Top 10 made the playoffs and 35 of them reached the regional finals. Three poll champs in 2017 also won state titles on the field, including Trotwood-Madison (Div. III), Steubenville (Div. IV) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI). Noting the State Semifinalists Four teams made their first football state final four appearance this year, including Girard (Div. IV), Attica Seneca East (Div. VI), Beverly Ft. Frye (Div. VI) and Ft. Loramie (Div. VII). Of note, Seneca East had not won a playoff game prior to this season. Four other teams made a return trip to the final four for the first time in a long time: Norwalk (last appearance in 1974), Chagrin Falls Kenston (1995), Liberty Center (2000) and St. Marys Memorial (2004). Speaking of Norwalk, after winning a state title in 1974,

the Truckers went 29 years before qualifying for the playoffs again (2013). Five of this year s semifinalists are now in the double-digits for state semifinal appearances, including Lakewood St Edward (10th), Massillon Washington (12th), Kettering Archbishop Alter (11th), Orrville (10th, Maria Stein Marion Local (17th). Newark Catholic is the leader in that category with 25 final four appearances. Noting the Regional Finalists Of last year s 14 state finalists, eight reached this year s regional finals. Of note, in Division III and IV, neither state finalist from a year ago advanced to the regional finals. Eight of the regional championship games featured the No. 1 vs. No. 2 seeds. Division V was the only division where all four No. 1 seeds advanced to the regional final. There were 13 undefeated teams that advanced to the regional finals, but only two regional finals included undefeated teams squaring off against each other. They both took place in Division II, including Region 5 (Akron Archbishop Hoban vs. Maple Hts.) and Region 7 (Massillon Washington vs. Wadsworth). Of the 10 teams that won their first playoff game in school history in week 11, three advanced to the third round, including Byesville Meadowbrook (Div. V, Region 19), Attica Seneca East (Div. VI, Region 22) and Edgerton (Div. VII, Region 27). In a Division VI regional final, the top two schools on the OHSAA s all-time playoff wins list faced each other, as Midwest Athletic Conference rivals Maria Stein Marion Local (75) topped Coldwater (73). Speaking of the MAC, this year will be the first time that a MAC school is not playing for the Division VII state title. Division VII began in 2013. First-Round Playoff Results by Seed Higher seeds (home teams) went 82-30 in the first round of the playoffs Nov. 2-3. No. 1 seeds went 26-2, No. 2 seeds went 20-8, No. 3 seeds went 21-7 and No. 4 seeds went 15-13. The two No. 8 seeds to win at No. 1 seeds included Division III, Region 10, Rocky River (defeated Clyde 27-17) and Division VII, Region 26, Leipsic (defeated Sycamore Mohawk 40-14). In both of those regions, only one higher seed/home team won in the first round. In 2017 playoffs, the higher seeds went 83-29 in the first round. There was one No. 8 seed that won, as Reading defeated Casstown Miami East 27-25 in Div. V, Region 20. In 2016, first-round hosts went 80-32 and five No. 8 seeds won, including Avon Lake in Div. II (27-26 at Avon), Akron East in Div. III (50-37 at Marlington), Philo in Div. VI (42-7 at Heath), Garrettsville Garfield in Div. V (31-21 at Canfield South Range) and Columbus Bishop Ready in Div. VI (28-21 at Hannibal River). In 2015, first-round hosts went 81-31 and four No. 1 seeds lost. First Round Success Three schools continued their amazing success rate in the first round of the playoffs. St. Henry has been in the playoffs 17 times and is now 17-0 in first-round playoff games. Cincinnati Colerain is now 20-0 in the first round, although one of its first-round games (1995) was later forfeited. Also of note, since 1998, Coldwater is 21-0 in the first-round of the playoffs (22-2 all-time in the first round). In addition, three schools won their first-round playoff game nine straight years before losing, including Germantown Valley View, Mogadore and Newark Licking Valley. Making History Entering the 2018 season, 59 OHSAA member schools had never made the football playoffs. That number decreased by one as Springfield Northwestern (Division IV, Region 16) qualified this year for the first time (lost in first round). The last team to win a state championship in its first year in the playoffs was Dublin Scioto in 1995. In 2017, four schools made the playoffs for the first time, including Lima Perry (Div. VII, Region 28), Galion Northmor (Div. VI, Region 23), Eastlake North (Div. II, Region 5) and Middletown Madison (Div. V, Region 20). The number of first-time playoff participants since 2000 included four in 2017, eight in 2016, eight in 2015, 10 in 2014, two in 2013, seven in 2012, eight in 2011, six in 2010, 14 in 2009, 12 in 2008, 14 in 2007, 10 in 2006, 12 in 2005, 16 in 2004, 12 in 2003, 21 in 2002, 17 in 2001 and 26 in 2000. Speaking of Making History... Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller qualified for the playoffs for the 35th time, which ties the OHSAA record held by Newark Catholic. MOST OHSAA PLAYOFF APPEARANCES, INCLUDING 2018: tie-1. Newark Catholic, 35 tie-1. Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, 35 3. Ironton, 34 4. Mogadore, 32 5. Steubenville, 31 6. Wheelersburg, 30 tie-7. Two of them were in Division VII, including Ashtabula St. John (Region 25), which was back for the first time since 1987, and Franklin Furnace Green (Div. VII), which was back for the first time since 1990. In addition, Morrow Little Miami was back after last making the playoffs in 1992, and Youngstown East returned after making its last appearance in 1997. Of those schools, only Little Miami advanced to the second round. In 2017, Milford (Div. I) was back in the playoffs for the first time since 1986, while Sidney (Div. II) was back for the first time since 1989. Two teams in Div. IV were also back after a long hiatus, including Pepper Pike Orange (1988) and London (1989). In 2015, Burton Berkshire was back in the playoffs for the first time since 1981. In 2013, Norwalk was back in the playoffs for the first time since winning the state championship in 1974. Coldwater Ties St. Ignatius Playoff Streak Coldwater qualified for the playoffs this year for the 22nd-consecutive season, which ties the state record set initially by Cleveland St. Ignatius from 1988 through 2009. Coldwater recently went to the state championship game eight straight years (2009-16) to tie Newark Catholic (1980-87) for the state record of consecutive title game appearances. Division I, II, III and VI games will be on Fridays. Division IV, V and VII games will be on Saturdays. In 2017, the OHSAA experimented with having all playoff games on Friday nights. Building on History Pages 12-18 of this release for the playoff history of each school that is currently in playoff position entering week 10 of the 2018 regular season. Week 10 Movers Many schools needed to win their final regular-season game last weekend in order to clinch a playoff berth. Several schools had big wins to jump into the playoff field after being outside the Top 8 in their region heading into week 10. A total of 22 schools were outside the Top 8 in their region heading into week 10, but qualified for the playoffs. The biggest mover was Alliance (Div. III, Region 9), which went from 12th to sixth. Coldwater and Marion Local Set Consecutive Playoff Wins Record Coldwater (streak ended in 2016) and Maria Stein Marion Local (streak ended in 2015) recently set the OHSAA record for most consecutive playoff victories with 24. In 2005, the MAC had its first double-championship weekend as Coldwater won the Division IV title in Canton and Delphos St. John s won the Division VI state title a few hours later in Massillon. The MAC has had two football state champions eight times since 2005 (2005, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017. In 2014, the MAC made state history in becoming the first conference to win three state football championship titles in the same season Coldwater, Minster and Marion Local swept Divisions V, VI and VII. The MAC is 4-1 in Div. VII state championship games. The MAC is 72-4 in first round playoff games against non-mac schools since the playoffs expanded to eight qualifiers per region in 1999. (The four losses include a Versailles loss to Lima Central Catholic in 2005, a Delphos St. John s loss to Arlington in 2014 and Anna losses in 2017 and 2018.) The MAC is 51-13 against non-mac schools in OHSAA regional championship games. The MAC is 37-7 in state semifinal games against non-mac schools. As of November 11, 2018, the MAC has won 130 various OHSAA state team championships, including 33 in football. Before the Playoffs Historians have found that in most years since 1895, the media or a specific organization named an Ohio high school football state champion. The Associated Press began its polls in 1947 and the OHSAA created the playoffs in 1972. The research of mythical state champions dating back to 1895 has been compiled on the football page at OHSAA.org. Championship Games Return to Canton After hosting the OHSAA state championship games in Columbus throughout the 1980s, natural grass was installed in Ohio Stadium in Columbus in the spring of 1990 and OSU asked the OHSAA to move its football state championship games to another location. The OHSAA found a home in Stark County, with Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium sharing the state championship games for 24 years from 1990-2013. The finals returned to Columbus from 2014-16 before returning to Canton for 2017 and 2018. MAC Builds on Success (By Gary Rasberry, Celina Daily Standard) The Midwest Athletic Conference started in 1973, but it wasn t until 1989 that the conference began its run of football dominance of the smaller divisions. From 1989, when Minster won the conference s first state title, to 2015 when Fort Recovery won its first-ever state title and Coldwater captured its sixth since 2005, the MAC has been regular visitors to the state championships game. In that span, the MAC has been missing from state championship weekend only three years (1991, 1993 and 2002). In 2003, Versailles, a five-time state champion before joining in the MAC in 2000, won its first MAC state football title, starting a streak where the MAC has brought home at least one title

Skyview Networks to Provide Satellite Distribution of OHSAA Radio Network Football Championship Broadcasts Satellite provider for Ohio s pro teams to distribute OHSAA football finals from Canton COLUMBUS, Ohio Skyview Networks, the radio broadcast satellite provider for Ohio s professional sports teams including the Cavs, Blue Jackets, Reds, Indians, Bengals and Browns, will once again distribute the OHSAA Radio Network broad-casts of the 2017 football state championship games. The football championship broadcasts, which had 51 affiliates in 2017, return to Canton Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1. Skyview Networks is pleased to partner with the OHSAA Radio Network to deliver state championship broadcasts to its affiliates, said Matt Stys, Vice President of Business Development for Skyview Networks. The football state championships in Ohio are a prestigious event and we are proud to add that to our client base, which includes hun-dreds of college and professional teams, many of which are in Ohio. The OHSAA Radio Network continues to grow every year and we look forward to being a part of that growth and service. Specializing in news and sports programming, Skyview Networks was formed in 1995 to provide broadcast services in the form of distribution, automation, and inventory management, as well as content for the radio industry. Com-bining cutting-edge technology, extensive resources and unmatched industry expertise, Skyview Networks is the partner of choice for advertisers, radio stations and sports organizations throughout North America. Skyview Networks is already the satellite provider of the aforementioned professional teams in Ohio along with ABC News Radio and ABC Sports Radio, meaning that most stations in Ohio already have Skyview Networks receivers and can automate the broadcasts. The OHSAA Radio Network, which has been carried by 84 stations across Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, was created in 2010 to provide exceptional radio broadcasts of selected OHSAA state tournaments and partner with local affiliates to carry those broadcasts, along with public service announcements and promotional messages. Stations that carry broadcasts receive discounts or waivers for the rights fees they would normally pay to broadcast OHSAA regional and state tournaments. OHSAA Radio Network Playoff Preview Shows The OHSAA Radio Network will produce and distribute a weekly 30-minute football playoff preview show throughout November. The show will include one local break (2:00) and will go around the state to preview each division. A link to the show will be emailed to stations for download. Playoff Games on TV Spectrum is the official television partner of the OHSAA and will televise several playoff games every weekend. Spectrum will announce its playoff selections by noon on Mondays. Spectrum s coverage of those games is exclusive and some games will be shown live. Spectrum will televise the state championship games live Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1. During the playoffs, other telecasts can begin at 11 PM. Championships on the OHSAA Radio Network Now in its ninth year, the OHSAA Radio Network will broadcast the football state championship games. Stations that commit to carry at least two state championship game broadcasts from the network will have their rights fees waived throughout the playoffs. The championship games will be available from Skyview Satellite and online. Please contact Tim Stried for details. Weekly Playoff Preview Shows The OHSAA Radio Network will distribute a weekly 30-minute playoff preview show on Wednesdays during the playoffs.
