Bikenomics Cycling is good for local commerce It creates communities 013

Tourists like cycling Even more since there are E-bikes But it needs good marketing (and of course good facilities) 014

015

What do we need to make cycling the sustainable opportunity?! Strategy Knowledge Courage Perseverance Experience Research Commitment Marketing/community/mindset Early adopters Strong included policy on all governmental levels Smart policy making 016

strategy A good strategy will make cycling a lasting component in the mobility mix

Cycling the sustainable opportunity? 027

Yes, it is! Houten, Netherlands Hann. Münden Germany Wageningen, Netherlands 028

What is needed for a good cycling policy? A good mix.. Starting young! Marketing Strong included policy on all governmental levels Smart policy making 029

A good strategy to make cycling a lasting component in the mobility mix of city, is a plan built up out of: Hardware: the material/physical necessities for cycling Software: the human side of mobility. Orgware: the cooperation process needed between all the actors Cycling inclusive mobility 030

Hardware The material/physical necessities for cycling Cycling paths Bicycle parkings Amounts of bicycles Traffic regulation Worldwide bias on hardware 01-03-15 031

Software The human side of mobility Behavioral & cultural change Drivers awareness Traffic & Urban design from human perspective But also: Juridical, legal aspects of behaviour How to communicate & promote 032

Orgware The cooperation process needed between all the actors involved How to organise planning apparatus Integration of cycling in urban & mobility planning Dynamic plans for long term planning Create critical collaborative atmosphere between different stakeholders Ways of financing Finding the right arguments 033

038

Young learned, is done old > Schools & NGO s provide cycling lessons for children and foreigners 039

Design for: All kinds of ages All kinds of bikes All kinds of uses 040

Cycling as part of culture 041

Cycling chances; history brings future 042

Cycling policy is an integral part of (sustainable) mobility planning > More than infrastructure only > Connection government-business community-education-research > Choices in traffic planning > Chain mobility > Community building 043

Grab the opportunity? > Plan for the future not for today > Be honest towards the users; biking where possible but cars are not damned > Use air quality, healthyness, livability as parameters next to traffic flow > Don t only with technical knowledge, but arrange commitment > You need to have a strong marketeer and early adopter > Don t only with technical knowledge, but arrange commitment 044

Conclusions cycling the sustainable opportunity? Yes!.but it takes time! Infrastructure is a good start.but more is needed; marketing, behaviour, commuitybuilding etc. E-bikes may change attitude towards cyling Offer cyclist more and car and scooter drivers the same they have now 045
