BIG NEWS. The Big Ten is tied for second in the nation with four teams ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches poll Top 25 rankings. The Big Ten is one of three conferences that features three of its men s basketball teams in the top 15 of the College Basketball Power Index (BPI) and KenPom rankings. Teams in 10th to 14th place in the current standings all own wins against Top 70 RPI teams this season, including three on neutral courts. Big Ten Conference men s basketball programs played the most non-conference games against teams in the AP Top 25 and USA Today Top 25 polls in the country. Big Ten teams played, collectively, 22 games against non-conference opposition ranked in the polls this season. The 2018 Big Ten Men s Basketball Tournament will be held from Feb. 28-March 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the first time in history. All 14 teams will advance to the tournament, with two first-round games slated for Wednesday, Feb. 28. The top four teams will receive first and second round byes and advance to the quarterfinals on Friday, March 2. The Big Ten Tournament will return to Chicago in 2019 and 2021 and Indianapolis in 2020 and 2022. The 2017-18 Big Ten Men s Basketball schedule is unlike any other in conference history. Moving the 2018 Tournament up one week, meant 18 conference games would be scheduled in a nine-week window. Historically, the Big Ten has been able to deliver the fewest one-day preps of any other conference. The 2017-18 conference schedule has 34 instances of one-day prep, with 20 occurring after the early-december games. That represents about 8 percent of the schedule in January and February, but the Big Ten had only one instance of single-day prep over the past two conference seasons. Four Big Ten teams are in the latest Associated Press (AP) and USA Today Coaches' Top 25 polls with one team receiving votes. Purdue tops all teams at No. 3/3 (AP/USA Today) and one first-place vote in each poll. No. 4/4 Michigan State improved one spot in the AP poll this week while No. 14/16 Ohio State and No. 20/20 Michigan each moved up a few spots from last week. Nebraska received four votes in the AP Poll for the first time this season. Only two teams in the nation rank inside the top 15 of the KenPom offensive and defensive adjusted efficiency rankings, and both hail from the Big Ten Conference: Purdue (No. 3, 123.4; No. 13, 94.5) and Michigan State (No. 9, 119.7; No. 10, 93.7). Nine Big Ten teams rank in the top 40 in total blocks with Michigan State leading the country at 208 blocks. Five Big Ten teams rank in the top 20 in assist-turnover ratio, led by Purdue (1.61) at fourth in the country. Four Big Ten teams rank inside the top 30 in scoring defense this season, led by Michigan (63.4 ppg allowed) at 12th in the country. Three teams rank in the top 25 in field-goal percentage defense led by the nation s leader Michigan State (36.1). Four teams rank in the top 40 in scoring margin with Purdue (19.0) and Michigan State (18.4) at second and third in the country, respectively. The Big Ten features three teams in the top five of total assists this year: Michigan State (1st, 524), Iowa (2nd, 485) and Purdue (4th, 465) (through games of Feb. 8). 70 - Wins in the NCAA Tournament by conference teams since the 2011 event, an average of more than 11 wins per year. 51 - Final Four appearances by Big Ten teams, including seven in the past nine seasons. 41 - Consecutive seasons the Big Ten has led the nation in attendance. 21 Returning students that earned All-Big Ten distinction in 2016-17. BIG TEN MEN'S BASKETBALL BY THE NUMBERS 8 - The number of Big Ten teams that won 20 or more games in 2016-17, tying a conference record. 7 - Active coaches that have won at least 200 career games, including six with at least 300 victories. 6 - Number of Big Ten students that have been named National Player of the Year in the past eight seasons. BIG TEN MEN S BASKETBALL WEEKLY RELEASE Big Life. Big Stage. Big Ten. Since its inception in 1896, the pursuit and attainment of academic excellence has been a priority for every Big Ten member institution. But maintaining the conference s standard of competing at the highest level in athletics also endures as an important component of the Big Ten experience. Striking that balance between academics and athletics is integral to the Big Ten s identity. Recognized as one of intercollegiate sports most successful undertakings, the Big Ten strives for success from its students not only on the field and in the classroom, but around the world as well. PREMIER ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS The Big Ten Academic Alliance is an academic consortium of all 14 Big Ten universities, which is widely considered to be the model for effective and voluntary collaboration among top research universities. Every Big Ten Academic Alliance institution ranks among the top 78 universities in the nation according to the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities, including six in the top 25. The Big Ten leads all conferences with more than 1,700 Academic All- Americans, including 47 honorees during the 2016-17 academic year. Big Ten Academic Alliance schools annually conduct $10 billion in funded research, $5 billion more than any other conference. A HISTORY OF ATHLETIC SUCCESS Big Ten schools have won at least seven national championships in seven of the last nine academic years and at least five in each of the last 20 years. In the last four full academic years, current Big Ten institutions have claimed 28 team national championships in 15 different sports. Over the last 11 full academic years, current Big Ten institutions have won 82 team national titles in 23 different sports. BROAD-BASED PROGRAMMING The Big Ten will administer over $200 million in direct financial support to more than 9,500 students competing in intercollegiate athletics for more than 11,000 participation opportunities on 350 teams in 42 different sports. The Big Ten sponsors 28 official conference sports, 14 for men and 14 for women, including the addition of men s ice hockey and men s and women s lacrosse the last three years. The Big Ten leads the nation in total students competing in intercollegiate athletics and participation opportunities, and sponsors more official sports than all conferences except the Ivy League. Almost 1,400 Big Ten competitors have participated in the Olympics, winning more than 600 medals, including nearly 300 gold. In the 2016 Olympic Games, 159 representatives from Big Ten institutions including current or former students and coaches were members to Olympic teams. Big Ten Olympians collected 47 medals in Rio. PASSIONATE FOLLOWING The Big Ten leads all conferences with 5.7 million alumni and nearly 580,000 students. Each year more than 11 million patrons attend Big Ten home contests, as the conference leads the nation in attendance for men s basketball, hockey, volleyball and wrestling. LEADERS IN INNOVATION Took part in the nation s first bowl game, winning the 1902 Rose Bowl Game, and signed an exclusive contract with the Tournament of Roses in 1946, making it the first bowl with permanent conference affiliations. Awarded the first Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1915, honoring outstanding seniors who demonstrated excellence in academics and athletics. Formed the Big Ten Advisory Commission in 1972, enlisting former students that competed in conference athletics to serve as liaisons to the NCAA s Diversity and Inclusion Department, the Big Ten Student- Athlete Advisory Commission and other organizations. Became the first conference to voluntarily adopt male and female participation goals after launching its Gender Equity Action Plan in 1992. Implemented the first collegiate football system of instant replay in 2004, which the NCAA approved for use among all conferences in 2006. Launched the Big Ten Network (BTN) in 2007, the first national conference-owned television network. Began partnering with the Ivy League to study the effects of head injuries in sports in 2012. Accepted Johns Hopkins University as the conference s first sport affiliate members in men s and women s lacrosse in 2013 and 2015, respectively. EXTENSIVE TELEVISION EXPOSURE Through the Big Ten s current media agreements with BTN, ABC/ ESPN, CBS and FOX, nearly 1,400 Big Ten events are produced and distributed nationally and globally on an annual basis. BTN is in more than 60 million homes across the United States and Canada. BTN2Go is BTN s digital extension, delivering live and ondemand programming to computers, smartphones and tablets. BTN Plus within BTN2Go streams hundreds of additional events each season. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT For more than 25 years, through the Big Ten s SCORE (Success Comes Out of Reading Everyday) program, the conference has partnered with Chicago elementary schools to improve reading performance. Surrounding the Big Ten Football Championship Game and Basketball Tournaments, the conference has held numerous community initiatives, such as the Big Ten Career Expo, SaturDAY of Service and Youth Football Clinics. In addition, the Big Ten has hosted a downtown 5K, collaborated with a local breast cancer awareness group and provided unique event experiences for military veterans.
