The Wildcats allowed just 69 points to New Orleans (averaging 73.3 ppg) and 64 to Sam Houston State (averaging 76.2 ppg). The Wildcats have allowed 65 points or less in seven games this season, and they are 6-1 in those games with only a 62-59 loss at Nicholls the only blemish on that record. The Wildcats enter Thursday night's game at Central Arkansas as the third-ranked scoring defensive team in the league, allowing just 69.6 ppg, while UCA is last in the league in scoring defense, allowing 83.5 ppg. ACU is third in the league in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to hit just 44.3 percent of their shots from the field. The Wildcats are also second in the league in the 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to hit just 33.0 percent of their shots from beyond the arc. While ACU is 12th in the league in scoring offense (68.3 ppg), the Wildcats are third in the league in field goal percentage (46.7 percent) and third in the league in the league in 3-point field goal percentage (37.3 percent). ACU is 2-0 with both wins coming last week with the starting lineup of sophomore guard Jaylen Franklin, junior guard Isaiah Tripp, sophomore wing Jaren Lewis, sophomore forward Hayden Howell and redshirt freshman post Jalone Friday. That lineup is the eighth different starting lineup that the Wildcats have used this season. Thursday night's game features four of the top 13 scorers and five of the top 30 in the league, led by UCA junior guard Jordan Howard, who is third in the league in scoring, averaging 19.7 ppg. UCA forward Mathieu Kamba is 11th in the league in scoring at 14.8 ppg, and both players scored 28 points last month in the Bears' win in Abilene. Lewis is 12th in the league in scoring, averaging 14.2 ppg for the Wildcats, while Friday is 13th in the league in scoring at 13.6 ppg. Franklin is tied for 30th in the league in scoring at 10.7 ppg after scoring 19 points in the win over Sam Houston State, his second-best scoring effort of the season behind a 20-point effort at Sacramento State last December. The Wildcats have two of the top 3-point shooters in the league on their roster in Friday and junior guard Drake Green. Friday is tied for fourth in the league in 3-point field goal percentage at 43.3 percent, while Green is seventh in the league in the category at 42.7 percent. Friday is ninth in the league in field goal percentage at 53.2 percent on the season, while Lewis is 11th in the league at 51.8 percent from the field. Despite his scoring average being down almost six points per game from last seson (16.2 ppg in 2015-16 to 10.7 in 2016-17), Franklin is still on pace to score more than 1,600 points in his career with more than two seasons left as a Wildcat. He's also on pace for nearly 400 career assists. Lewis is on pace to score 412 point this season and 1,429 in his career. He's also on pace to pull down 756 career rebounds, which would leave him in the top 10 in ACU history. Returning Letterman Jaylen Franklin G 6-2, 0 LITTLE 220, SOPH, 1VL (PARKVIEW ROCK, HS) ARK. 1 Jaren Lewis F 6-6, 230, SOPH, 1VL ORLANDO, FLA. (LAKE HIGHLANDS PREP) The most dynamic player the Wildcats have suited up in decades, Franklin returns for his sophomore season after playing in 30 games (24 starts) in 2015-16. After the season, Franklin finished as the runner-up in a national fan vote as the College Court Report Mid-Major Freshman of the Year. He has already been named to the Southland Conference preseason first team all-conference team. Freshman (2015-16): Franklin was voted the 2015-16 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and second team all-southland Conference after a dominating freshman season. On a 2015-16 ACU team loaded with youth, Franklin proved himself to be the best freshman in the Southland Conference in 2015-16, leading the Wildcats to eight conference wins, doubling their total from the 2014-15 season. Franklin finished seventh in the league in scoring at 16.2 points per game the top mark among freshmen in the league and finished sixth in the league in steals per game (1.7 per game) and 14th in the league in field goal percentage (51.3 percent). Franklin led the Wildcats in scoring in 16 of 30 games played this season and scored 20 points or more in eight games. He scored a career-high 29 points in a Jan. 19 home win over McNeese State, and then added 28 on Feb. 27 in an 87-84 home win over Houston Baptist. Franklin was the first Wildcat to earn all-southland honors since Willie Calvert and Andrew Prince were selected second team all-conference and honorable mention, respectively, in 1972-73, ACU's final season in the league before leaving for the Southland Conference. High School: A four-year letterman at Parkview, Franklin was a four-time all-conference player, a three-year all-region selection and two-time state champion in Arkansas. As a senior in 2014-15, he led Parkview to the team championship at the prestigious Whataburger Tournament in Fort Worth, leading the Patriots to a 53-41 win over the top-ranked team in Texas (Plano West) in the final. Plano West went on to win the Class 6A state championship in Texas last year. Parkview won state championships in Franklin s freshman and sophomore years and won a mythical national championship after his freshman season. The Patriots won the mythical national championship after a 69-65 double-overtime win over Jonesboro in the Class 6A state championship game. Those two teams met again in the state championship game in Franklin s junior year with Jonesboro taking a 66-54 victory over Parkview. As a senior in 2014-15, Franklin averaged 18.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game. As a junior in 2013-14, Franklin averaged 15.8 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 3.6 spg. As a sophomore he averaged 12.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg and 2.4 spg, and as a freshman in 2011-12, he averaged 10.8 ppg and 4.6 rpg. Franklin also played for one of the top AAU teams in the country in the Arkansas Wings where two of his teammates Malik Monk (considering Arkansas, Kansas, Oregon and Kentucky) and Kevaughn Allen (Florida) were two of the top prep players in the country. Personal: Full name is Jaylen Deonta Franklin. Born 22 December 1995. Son of Loreal Thomas. 2015 graduate of Little Parkview High School. Played at Parkview HS for legendary prep coach Al Flanigan. One of the best freshmen in the Southland Conference returns to the Wildcats for what should be a big sophomore season. Lewis played in all 31 games as a freshman in 2015-16 with 10 starts. Freshman (2015-16): Lewis finished as the team s second-leading scorer (9.4 points per game) and leading rebounder (5.8 rebounds per game). Lewis, in fact, led all Southland Conference freshmen in total rebounds (64) and rebounds per game. He scored in double figures in 15 games and had one double-double as a freshman: 17 points and 11 rebounds in a Feb. 15 game against Sam Houston State. Scored 18 points and had nine rebounds in his first career game, a win over the University of the Southwest on Nov. 13, 2015. Lewis pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds in a Jan. 12 home win over Northwestern State and had a career-high 22 points in a March 3 home loss against Incarnate Word. Lewis provided the season s signature moment on Feb. 27 when he took a pass from Jaylen Franklin near midcourt and banked in a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in the Wildcats comeback win over the Privateers. High School: A four-year letterwinner at Lake Highlands Prep, Lewis helped lead his team to back-to-back Class 4A state championships as a sophomore and junior (2012-13 and 2013-14). As a junior, he scored four key buckets in the second half of the state title game to help Lake Highlands beat Ribault, 58-53. He played alongside 6-1 point guard Joel Berry II (sophomore at North Carolina in 2015-16), who was a Parade All-America, three-time winner of the Mr. Florida Basketball award. F ormer Abilene Christian letterman and assistant basketball coach Joe Golding is at the start of his sixth season as the head men s basketball coach at his alma mater. Last year, the Wildcats showed a marked improvement, finishing the 2015-16 season at 13-18 overall and 8-10 in the Southland Conference. ACU finished seventh in the league and would have qualified for the conference s post-season tournament if it had been eligible. The 2016-17 season will serve as ACU s final season of the four-year transition period from NCAA Division II status to full NCAA Division I membership. ACU s eight wins in conference play doubled their output of Southland victories in 2014-15 when they finished 4-14. The Wildcats were led in 2015-16 by freshman guard Jaylen Franklin, who led the team in scoring, setting an ACU single-season freshman scoring record with 486 points. Franklin was voted the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and was the national runner-up in fan voting as the College Court Madness Mid-Major National Freshman of the Year. ACU also returns sophomore Jaren Lewis, whose half-court buzzer-beater against New Orleans late in the season provided the season s signature moment. In 2014-15, in the program's second season at the NCAA Division I level, the Wildcats finished 10-21 overall, but doubled their number of Southland Conference wins, going from two in 2013-14 to four in 2014-15. Despite the final record, ACU made several strides during the 2014-15 campaign, not the least of which was winning the championship at the Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic with wins over South Carolina State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. ACU won just two games against NCAA Division I opponents in 2013-14, but came away with seven NCAA Division I wins in 2014-15, including an impressive 72-61 home win over Sacramento State of the Big West Conference. The Wildcats also started Southland Conference play 3-0 with home wins over Central Arkanas and Nicholls and a solid 95-81 road win over Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La. That win snapped a 20-game road losing streak dating back to the end of the 2012-13 season, ACU's final season at the NCAA Division II level. In the Wildcats first season at the NCAA Division I level (2013-14), Golding led ACU to an 11-20 mark against one of the toughest schedules in the nation. The Wildcats hit the road to play Duquesne, St. Bonaventure, Maryland, Iowa, TCU, Xavier and Towson all in the season s first month. The Wildcats were 2-12 in Southland Conference play, but lost four games by four points or less and another three games by eight points or less. ACU also led the Terrapins of Maryland through the game s first 28 minutes before finally falling to the 2002 NCAA national champion. Golding s Wildcats won 12 games for the second consecutive year in 2012-13, but were 6-2 against non-conference teams and improved on their standing within the Lone Star Conference. And even though the 2012-13 squad posted the same scoring average (71.5 ppg) as Golding s first ACU team, the Wildcats became much better overall at shooting (.460) and rebounding (35.5) while reducing their number of turnovers. ACU finished its final year as a NCAA D-II program ranked 14th in 3-point field goal percentage (.404) and 23rd in rebounding margin (+5.8) thanks to efforts of seniors Eric Lawton and Steven Werner. Lawton, who averaged 17.3 points and 4.5 assists per game, was voted second team all-lone Star Conference and earned the Wildcats first and only Newcomer of the Year award. He also ranked seventh nationally with a.459 (67-146) 3-point field goal percentage. Before returning to Abilene, Golding coached the previous three seasons for head coach Steve Shields at Arkansas-Little Rock, helping the Trojans to the Sun Belt Conference title and an appearance in the NCAA Division I national tournament. In addition to his normal coaching duties which included working with the UALR guards Golding was the Trojan's recruiting coordinator. Golding joined the UALR coaching staff on July 1, 2008, bringing with him nine years of coaching experience at the junior college and high school levels. Prior to joining the Trojans, Golding spent three seasons (2005-08) as the top assistant to head coach Jason Copeland at Abilene Christian, where his 9 HEAD COACH Joe Golding primary duties included recruiting, scouting and on-floor coaching. A former point guard at ACU from 1994-98, he was also responsible for coaching the Wildcat guards. In 2007-08, Golding helped guide the Wildcats to a 20-9 record, marking the program's first 20-win season since the 1998-99 campaign. The 2007-08 ACU squad qualified for the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the first time since 1998, Golding's senior season. In addition, ACU had three guards earn all-lsc South Division honors in Corwin Ragland, Dejan Sencanski and Brandon Callahan, marking the first time since the 1985-86 season that ACU had more than one player on the all-conference team. Ragland was also named NABC Second Team All-South Central Region after averaging 17.1 points per game. Golding was a four-year letterwinner at ACU from 1994-98, playing in all 108 games, and was given the Teague Point Guard Award as a senior. He shot 46 percent from the floor over his four-year career, and averaged 4.3 points and 4.2 assists per game. Upon graduating from ACU with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science in May of 1999, Golding got his first coaching job as a varsity assistant at South Garland High School, where he helped the team to back-to-back Class 5A playoff appearances. He spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant coach at Seminole Junior College before taking the head coaching job at Sachse High School. In the program's first years at the 5A level, Golding led the team to a 15-14 record in 2002-03 and an 18-10 mark in 2003-04. Prior to returning to Abilene Christian in 2005, Golding spent the 2004-05 season as an assistant coach at Collin County Community College.
