Last Game UTRGV Falls at CSU Bakersfield Jan. 12, 2017 at Icardo Center The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team had its program record sevengame winning streak snapped with a 74-46 loss to CSU Bakersfield. Senior Shawnte Goff led UTRGV (12-7, 2-1 WAC) with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Erika Williams led CSU Bakersfield (6-10, 1-1 WAC) with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, and 10 rebounds. Alexxus Gilbert scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Tylinn Carter finished with 10 points and six rebounds. CSU Bakersfield jumped out to leads of 9-2, 14-4 and 17-6 before a three by sophomore Bernesha Peters allowed UTRGV to close the first quarter on a 10-2 run to pull within three. UTRGV (12-6, 2-0 WAC) is now off to the best 18-game start in program history, remaining one game ahead of last year s record-setting pace that saw the team finish with a program record.576 (19-14) winning percentage. Sophomore Idil Türk led UTRGV with a career-high 20 points on a career-best 5-of-6 shooting from behin the arc. Senior Mary Savoy scored 16 points with five rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Junior Shawnte Goff scored 10 points with four rebounds and five assists. Ceidra Coleman led UMKC (5-10, 0-2 WAC) with nine points. The first quarter was tight, with UMKC leading 13-12 in the final minute. Türk closed out the first and opened the second quarter with three-pointers and then hit two more during an 18-0 run to put UTRGV up 30-13 with 3:41 remaining. After a Coleman layup, UTRGV scored the next 10 points, going up 40-15 on a Savoy jumper early in the third quarter. In total, UTRGV outscored UMKC 21-2 in the second quarter. The two points were the fewest ever by a UTRGV opponent in a single quarter. UTRGV (11-6, 1-0 WAC) is now off to the best 17-game start in program history, remaining one game ahead of last year s record-setting pace that saw the team finish with a program record.576 (19-14) winning percentage. Junior Shawnte Goff led UTRGV with 23 points five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds. Senior Mary Savoy scored 10 points with seven rebounds. Kaylee Allen led CSU (0-15, 0-1 WAC) with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Goff hit a three and Savoy made a layup as UTRGV jumped out to a 5-0 lead. CSU hit eight of its next 11 shots to go on a 22-7 run and take a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. UTRGV opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run, capped by a three by sophomore Bernesha Peters, to pull within 24-23. Allen then hit two baksets and a free throw around a Goff three to put CSU up 29-26 at halftime. CSU still led by three early in the third quarter at 31-28, but Kjartansdóttir hit a jumper and scored all of her 11 points during a 35-5 run to put UTRGV up 63-36, pushing the game out of reach. UTRGV outscored CSU 59-21 over the final three quarters. With sophomore Idil Türk already on the court, freshman Tuana Dinç checked in with 1:44 remaining, marking the first time in NCAA history that there have been two Turkish-born players on the court at the same time for the same team and just the second time two Turkish-born players have ever been on the court at the same time. 2015-16 Season Notes In its 19 wins last season, the team s average margin of victory stood at 13.2 points per game for the second year in a row after scoring one more point (251) in the same number of wins. The team posted a 90-38 (+52) victory over Texas Lutheran (11/18), which marked its largest margin of victory of the season. The team had 10 other double-digits margins of victory, winning 90-44 (+46) over Concordia (11/16), 52-28 (+24) over Grand Canyon (1/7), 78-56 (+22) over Chicago State, 68-50 (+18) over Incarnate Word (12/3), 75-60 (+15) over Evangel (12/30), 60-46 (+14) over CSU Bakersfield (1/21), 60-47 (+13) over Incarnate Word, 61-48 (+13) over Utah Valley, 66-55 (+11) over New Mexico State, and 55-45 (+10) over Houston (12/20) At 19-14, the program experienced its second-straight winning season at the NCAA Division I level after not having had one since 1982-83 (10-5 as NAIA DII Program). Shawnte Goff was the WAC Player of the Year and a member of the All-WAC First Team and All-Defensive Team based on her play during the WAC season as voted on by the WAC s head coaches. During WAC play, Goff averaged a WAC-leading 16.1 points per game while playing a conference-high 35.9 minutes per game. She also ranked fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5), free throw shooting (.794) and defensive rebounding (5.4), seventh in assists (3.3) and three-pointers made per game (1.9), 13 th in steals (1.4) and blocks per game (0.6), and 18 th in overall rebounding (5.6). Overall, Goff led the WAC in four different categories, including scoring (15.5), total points (512), field goal attempts (510) and three-pointer attempts (233). She also ranks second in minutes per game (35.1), and total minutes played (1,158), third in assistto-turnover ratio (1.6), tied for fifth in three-pointers per game (2.0), sixth in assists per game (3.2), and total three-pointers made (67), and seventh in free throw shooting (.752) and steals per game (1.6). Tidwell is the program s all-time leader in winning percentage (.552), conference winning percentage (.596), conference wins (28), conference tournament wins (4), home winning percentage (.792), neutral site wins (9), neutral site winning percentage (.600), conference home wins (17), conference home winning percentage (.708), conference road wins (11), conference road winning percentage (.478), non-conference winning percentage (.522), and non-conference home winning percentage (.875). He ranks second in total wins (64), seven away from breaking the record and becoming just the second active head coach to be the winningest head coach at two NCAA Division I institutions, along with Texas A&M s Gary Blair, who also holds the distinction at Arkansas. Career: When Tidwell started at Lamar in 2007-08, he took over a team that hadn t had a winning record since 1994-95 and recorded a winning record every year, including four seasons of 20 or more wins and five seasons of 19 or more wins. He has reached double-figures in conference wins five times, always finishing at least.500. Tidwell led the Cardinals to a 26-8 record (13-3 Southland), the secondhighest win total in program history, and the 2010 NCAA Tournament after winning the Southland Conference Co-Championship and the Southland Conference Tournament Championship, en route to earning Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year honors. In 2012-13, Tidwell led the Cardinals to a 22-11 record (12-6 Southland) and a spot in the WBI (Women s Basketball Invitational) Quarterfinals. Tidwell has proven his ability both on and off the court, earning a chance to be Lamar s director of athletics in 2010-11. Tidwell had a successful year as an administrator, with an emphasis on the studentathlete, on the fields and courts and in the classroom, while also leading the women s basketball team to a 25-8 record (13-3 Southland) and a spot in the WNIT.
