That continues Thursday with a road contest at Portland State, followed by a home match against Idaho State Saturday night. Several Redhawk players are close to either reaching major milestones (Cristin Richards needs five kills to reach 1,000 for her career) or moving up the Redhawk all-time lists (Emily Deleissegues in digs, four different players in blocks). LAST WEEK: In an exhibition match against Canadian school Trinity Western, Seattle U won the first set but was sluggish the rest of the way, losing to the Spartans in four sets (20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-19). Sarah Jaeckel led the team with 17 kills, with Julia Bonadio earning 10 kills and a.500 hitting percentage. Sarah Lewicki was the setter for the first three sets, earning 32 assists. A more focused Redhawk team took the Reese Court floor Monday night and swept Eastern Washington (25-19, 25-20, 25-12), sweeping the season series from the Eagles. Cristin Richards finished with 19 kills and only one attack error in 40 attempts for a career-high.450 hitting percentage, plus she earned eight digs and three block assists. Jordan Keller contributed five kills and a match-high eight total blocks, while Emily Deleissegues led the back line with ten defensive digs. Setter Jamie Mellies ran a solid offense, collecting 31 assists along with two service aces and four digs. MAKING HISTORY: During Seattle U s 3-2 victory over the Portland Pilots on Sept. 21, two Redhawk players notched single-match totals that few players before them had reached. Junior Cristin Richards finished with 27 kills, the third-most kills in a match for Seattle University and the most since Nikole Thompson earned 29 kills against Western Oregon on Sept. 13, 2007. At the net, junior Jordan Keller earned one solo block and nine block assists for ten total blocks. The nine block assists tied for the second-most in a match by a Seattle U player, as did the ten total blocks. Only Emily Powell s 12 blocks against Alaska-Fairbanks on Sept. 22, 2007, topped Keller s rejection rate. With 309 kills so far this season, Richards is five kills away from entering the top ten list for most kills in a single season, while Keller, with 87 total blocks, is on pace to break the single-season blocks record of 107.

This year s team has already more than doubled that total, playing in nine five-set matches so far in 2010. They have already exceeded the total of eight five-set matches from the 2008 season, the first year Seattle U competed at the Division I level. In that season, four of the team s final six matches went the distance. The record for most five-set matches in one season is 11, set in 2002. Seattle U has shown it can compete with the best, taking nationally-ranked Oregon, Pac- 10 school Oregon State, WAC school Utah State and Mountain West member Wyoming to five sets. LOWE S SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Senior setter Jamie Mellies is one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award for volleyball. The award is given to a senior who has notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character, and competition. Mellies has a 3.921 cumulatuive grade point average while majoring in civil engineering and minoring in mathematics. She has volunteered at the Rotary Boys and Girls Club as well as at the Community Lunch in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. She has been the starting setter since the second match of her freshman year and just collected her 3,000th career assist. As for character, she has shown leadership with her actions throughout her Seattle University career.
SCOUTING PORTLAND STATE: The Vikings come into Thursday s match with an 8-7 overall record, including a 4-1 record in Big Sky conference play that puts the team in second place in the league standings. Portland State had a five-match winning streak snapped by Sacramento State last Saturday. Whitney Phillips leads the team offensively with 299 kills, earning almost five kills per set. She also leads the squad with 19 service aces and is second on the team with 161 digs. Christie Hamilton has earned 106 kills, while Lana Zielke has 100 kills and a team-high 66 total blocks. Garyn Schlatter leads the team with 491 assists, and Diana Villalpando is the team leader in digs with 175 defensive digs. SCOUTING IDAHO STATE: The Bengals come into the weekend with a 10-7 overall record, including a 3-3 record in Big Sky play. Idaho State lost a four-set match at Boise State Tuesday night and is slated to face Sacramento State Friday night before coming to Seattle for Saturday s match. Haylee Thompson-Brock leads the team with 235 kills, with Britta Bartschi- Rhodehouse right behind her with 162 kills. Lori Mendenhall leads the team with 477 assists, but Karissa Legaux has seemingly taken over the setting duties, collecting 185 assists so far this season. IDAHO STATE: Idaho State has won both meetings over Seattle U in Pocatello, Idaho.
