SAN JOAQUIN DELTA POWER SQUADRON Minutes Monday, October 8, 2018 Call to Order: Bob Miles, Commander Quorum: Yes Pledge of Allegiance Lead by Ron Sherman Approve Minutes:Gary 1 Doug 2 passed st nd 7:32pm Reports: Treasurer: Doug Sherman We have Money! San Rafael Yacht Club made a donation to our general fund after staying at our island. District 25 gave us proceeds from the July event that will be used at the island for another storage box. Legislative: Welcome back John Taylor! John reported that the RBOC is opposing the Ca. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife s proposed restoration of Frank s Tract as the project would negatively and permanently harm present and future boating opportunities in this prime area of the Delta. Access to False River and the San Joaquin River to the East would be permanently blocked. The project would result in the loss of marinas and marine related business. The project would harm striped bass and black bass fishing. The project would eliminate an important State Recreational Area that provides the stimulus for the recreational and economic activity for the region. Public Relations: Position still OPEN-This job intails someone giving information about our group to Newspapers and Radio Stations in the area. Safety: Nick Patterson was absent but Karl Keller reported that there is a lot of debris and hyicnth in the Delta so be careful. He also mentioned that the rock storage area near the I-5 bridge is being tested for stability as it apears the area is starting to cave in. Who s job is safety?. Vessel Safety Check: Rick reported only 1 had been turned in. He is still hoping for his goal of 100 by Nov. 1 st. VE s are a great way to educate others and make sure your boat is at its best for your safety and others. Having a VE is a good way to make contact with possible new members of the squadron. Boating Activities: Mike McIntyre is the only member on the bay cruise this year! He will not be making reservation at South Beach for next yr. since there is a min. of 10 boats. In an email he sent, he suggested that different people take on boating activities so as to involve more members. He and Jane will continue to head up St. Patricks Day, He s hoping Membership Involvement will take Memorial Day and the Bods will take Labor Day. Others are encouraged to plan something for the good of the group. Membership Involvement: Bonnie Rogers brought in hats and shirts for those who had ordered them. There are a few extra if you want, contact her. The Christmas Party is December 8 th and a flier will be coming out soon. Start looking at getting gift certificates or putting together gift baskets. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. She brought up having music at this event. We have gone overbudget before when we paid for entertainment. It was suggested that we use music like Nick provided last year. Island : Doug Sherman said he had been to the island today and found two of the storage cabinets opened. It didn t look like anything was missing. He closed them. If you are out there and see this again, please close them. What year was the Stockton Deep water channel opened?

Social Media: like us on our Facebook page.san Joaquin Delta Power Squadrin. Education: Gary Rogers repoorted the the ABC course would have its test this Thursday. It was a successful class. He will be sending letters out to the marinas and yacht clubs letting them know what the SJDPS has to offer in ways of classes and more. There is a letter at the end of the Sounding Board. He would like your input on it. Please contact Gary at (559) 318-0721 after you read it, with your suggestions, input, etc. Remember this is YOUR club! Old Business: Remember Merit Marks are due to Scott Wiesemann by Nov. 10 th. All chair persons and bridge officers need to turn these in. A minimum of 12hrs. of service given in a year to help with the club will earn you a merit mark. New Business: John Tyalor reported the Micky Thole is in declineing health. John was going to be looking at his boat to see what needs to be done to get it ready to sell. Please keep Micky and Burgie in your thoughts and prayers. The nominating committee will be getting together soon to find people to help out on committees and the bridge. It s really not that painful! We all help each other out so please be willing to give of your time. Meeting Adjorned: 8:11pm motion made by Doug S., 2 nd by Gary R. Lt. From our Education Chair gary Rogers: Who are we? The San Joaquin Delta Power Squadron. What do we do? Teach Boating Safety. How do we do it? We have several programs from the first time you use a boat up to advanced navigation. Below are a few of the programs we have. Vessel Safety Check is a free program where we come on your boat and go through it making sure you are following state and federal requirements of boating safety. If you comply we give you a sticker to display on your boat showing the Sherriff and Coast Guard you are in compliance. Vessel Safety Checks are offered year-round. Jump Start Program is for people new to boating, or maybe you just upgraded to a different boat that you are not familiar with. We will have someone who has a boat similar to yours come on board your boat and show you how to handle it. This is a 2- or 3-hour familiarization so you can go out on the water and be safe. This also is a free program and is offered year-round. We also review your understanding of rules of the road and communication procedures. Our Americas Boating Course, where we teach you: Boat Handling and Seamanship, equipment needed on your boat, the rules of the boating road, lines and knots, charts, trailering, and piloting. This course is a 12-hour classroom course (6 2 hour classes over 6 weeks, and you will be eligible for your California Boaters card upon completion. We have these classes in the fall and spring. The cost is $35.00 and includes all educational materials. Partner in command is a course held at our Training Facility on the Delta and is a 1-day event where we focus on training spouses, significant others, older children, or close friends who boat with the skipper on a regular basis how to handle the boat in the case of an emergency. The course addresses the basics of boat handling and things they should know or be aware of if the skipper becomes unable to handle the boat due to injury, illness, or medical emergencies. The class is divided into both classroom sessions and on-the-water training with instructors proficient in all areas of boating. The class room sessions include focus on life jackets and man overboard, anchoring, VHF radio procedures, signaling, first aid, boat handling in the Bay and Delta, pollution control and how to tie your boat to the dock (knots). The on-the-water portion of the class is just that, on the water. Instructors proficient in boat handling will accompany the students out on the water and go through a series of exercises designed to teach the students how to competently and safely maneuver their vessel. During this time, the skipper becomes first mate, line handler, gofer, etc. and only gets to offer input if the instructor deems it necessary. These classes are offered monthly during the summer and the cost is $60.00 including dinner for the student and Captain. For more information ask one of our members or call Gary Rogers at 559 318 0721, or Doug Sherman at 209-475-8494 or cell 562-773-3684. Or visit our website at www.sjdps.org.
