TBA vs. TBA RIVER BANDITS OVERCOME WHITECAPS LATE SURGE FOR SUNDAY WIN: In what began as a stellar performance by right-hander Lance McCullers (five shutout innings, nine strikeouts, two hits) and turned into a bullpen battle Sunday afternoon, the Quad Cities River Bandits rebounded from allowing West Michigan to tie the game, 4-4, in seventh inning, scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and left Whitecaps at every base for the final out of a 5-4 win at Fifth Third Ballpark. Austin Elkins brought in the deciding run on an eighth-inning squeeze play, and right-hander John Neely issued two straight walks to load the bases in the ninth inning before a game-ending strikeout of Lance Durham. WHITECAPS USE COSTLY INNING TO DOWN BANDITS SATURDAY: The River Bandits rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead into the fifth inning Saturday night, but a two-out, bases-loaded infield single by West Michigan Whitecaps center fielder Jake Stewart and the subsequent throwing error by shortstop Joe Sclafani opened the door for a four-run fifth inning and the Whitecaps 7-4 home victory at Fifth Third Ballpark. Quad Cities lost for the first time in seven games when having right-hander Vincent Velasquez and left-hander Joe Bircher as their starting tandem. The pair combined to allow three runs on five hits in seven innings - including three shutout innings by Bircher - but the inning in between was the pivotal one Saturday. Right-hander Cameron Lamb allowed four runs on three hits in the fifth inning to take the loss. AFFLIATE MATCH-UPS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: For the first two time in 2013, the River Bandits and their major league affiliate, the Houston Astros, played teams in the same organization on the same day Saturday and Sunday. Houston lost, 17-2, at home against Detroit, and the Tigers Class-A affiliate, West Michigan, defeated Quad Cities, 7-4, on Saturday. On Sunday, Quad Cities took a 5-4 win, but the Astros lost again to the Tigers, 9-0. Quad Cities and Houston will not match up against the same organization on the same day again until Friday, June 21, through Sunday, June 23, when the Astros visit the Chicago Cubs, and Kane County visits Quad Cities. RIVER BANDITS VISIT WEST MICHIGAN FOR FIRST TIME SINCE : The Quad Cities River Bandits are playing at Fifth Third Ballpark for the first time since sweeping a three-game series May 31-June 2,. Current St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Trevor Rosenthal was the winning pitcher in the series finale against the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Last season West Michigan finished 72-68 overall, finishing two games out of a playoff spot in each half of the season. The Whitecaps took two of three games in Davenport April 26-28. BORKOWSKI RETURNS TO WEST MICHIGAN: After River Bandits manager Omar Lopez returned to South Bend - the place of his last stop as a professional player - earlier this week, Quad Cities pitching coach Dave Borkowski is returning to West Michigan, the Tigers affiliate for whom he went 15-3 with a 3.46 ERA in 1997, the first year of the current affiliation between the Whitecaps and Detroit after the minor league club was affiliated with Oakland for its first three seasons. He threw the first no-hitter in Whitecaps history on April 20 that season, which saw West Michigan go 92-39 (.702 winning percentage) to be named Baseball America s Minor League Team of the Year. An 11th round pick by Detroit in 1995, Borkowski reached the major league club in 1999 and pitched parts of seven seasons with the Tigers, Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros. TWO MORE BANDITS MAKE MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUTS: Friday night in Milwaukee saw the St. Louis Cardinals use two former Quad Cities pitchers, as right-handers Carlos Martinez and Seth Maness each pitched one shutout inning in a 6-1 win. Three former River Bandits have made their major league debuts this season, beginning with 2009 outfielder Jermaine Curtis on April 27 for St. Louis. A total of 277 players have played in Quad Cities and the major leagues since the franchise debuted in the Midwest League in 1960. See pages 5 and 6 of these notes for active alumni. BANDITS RALLY TO SALVAGE FINALE OF SERIES IN SOUTH BEND: The River Bandits lost their fifth straight season series to the South Bend Silver Hawks but managed to avoid the first sweep by an opponent Wednesday through Friday at Coveleski Regional Stadium. In the Wednesday opener, the Silver Hawks rallied from a 3-0, fifth-inning deficit for a 4-3 win. Thursday night he River Bandits came back to tie the Silver Hawks, 4-4, in the seventh inning, but South Bend scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 6-4 win, and the River Bandits left a season-high 15 runners on base despite matching a season high with 11 walks in their second straight loss. On Friday, the River Bandits overcame a 2-0 deficit and being no-hit for 6 2/3 innings by right-hander Brandon Sinnery. Quad Cities scored single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings for a 3-2 win. Designated hitter Miles Hamblin broke up the no-hitter in the seventh and had the go-ahead RBI single in the ninth inning. Catcher Roberto Pena collected a hit in his 11th straight game, and center fielder Teoscar Hernandez hit his first Midwest League home run. a 2013 RIVER BANDITS AT A GLANCE Regular Season Record...17-11 First Half Record...17-11 Second Half Record...0-0 Home...7-4 Road...10-7 vs. Western Division...11-6 vs. Eastern Division...6-5 1st Half Place (MWL Western)... 2nd Games Behind... 3.0 Last 10...6-4 Last 5...2-3 Current Streak...Won 1 2013 Home Attendance... 19,324 Home Dates... 10 Nightly Average Attendance... 1,932 Midwest League Rank...9th of 16 BANDITS VS.
