Bulletin www.ahsaa.org January 2017 AAA Announces Wendy s Football and Cheer 2016 High School Players of the Year Winners The Arkansas Activities Association announced the selections for the Wendy s Football and Cheer High School Players of the Year Awards for the 2016-2017 school year. Senior quarterback Taylor Powell of Fayetteville is the Football Player of the Year. Senior Haley Morton of Sheridan is the Cheer Player of the Year. This is the fourth year for the Wendy s Player of the Year Awards. A total of 23 athletes will be selected from the sports of golf, tennis, volleyball, cross country, dance, cheer, football, swimming, wrestling, bowling, basketball, softball, baseball, soccer and track. Each winner will be recognized at the Wendy s Day of Champions luncheon at the Holiday Inn Airport Conference Center in east Little Rock on Thursday, June 1, 2017. Coaches and school administrators are eligible to make nominations for these awards throughout the school year. Powell led Fayetteville to Class 7A state championships in 2015 and 2016 and to the runner-up position in 2014. He was recently named the Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year. During his senior year, Powell connected on 237 passes out of 348 attempts for 3,367 yards and 44 touchdowns. During his career, Powell passed for 9,474 yards and 113 touchdowns. Morton was a sparkplug for Sheridan success from the moment she began competition as a freshman. During that time, Sheridan won state cheer championships in 2013, 2015 and 2016. Morton was an All-State selection in 2014 and 2016. Morton was the Sheridan cheer captain for the 2016-17 school year. Continue to page 2 AHSCA Names 2016-2017 Outstanding Coaches For Golf, Tennis, Cross Country and Volleyball The Arkansas High School Coaches Association has selected its 2016-2017 Outstanding Coaches of the Year for the sports of golf, tennis, cross country and volleyball. This is the second year for the organization to use a seasonal voting format for its Outstanding Coaches of the Year. In golf, Dell Leonard of Mountain Home won the award in the girls division, while Scott Williams of Fayetteville won the award in the boys division. This is the second consecutive year for both Leonard and Williams to win the award. award in the boys division. In cross country, Johnette Goldman of Heber Springs was selected for the award in the girls division, and Dale Creswell of Heber Springs was named for the boys division. This is the second time for Goldman to win the award (2013-14) and the third time for Creswell (2010-11, 2014-15). The volleyball winner is Margie McGee of Valley View. This is the third time for McGee to win the award (2005-06, 2014-15). In tennis, Jason Manchester of Valley View won the award in the girls division, while Steve Cox of Bergman won the Centennial Bank is the Titled Named Sponsor of AAA championship awards.
