You use it to turn on your lights, charge your cell phones, and play your videogames. But where do we get this energy? Earlier this month, the students of the Westbury Middle School competed in the Kid Wind Challenge. Under the supervision of Mr. Gray and Mr. Canalini, the students created Westbury s first wind turbine. The Westbury Windmill competed against wind turbines from several other Long Island schools. At the Cradle of Aviation museum, each was judged based upon their designs, efficiency, and energy output. With the hard work and dedication of our students, the Westbury Middle School placed 2 nd in this year s Kid Wind Challenge. Congratulations to all our student engineers on your accomplishment! page 2 DID YOU KNOW!? -The planet Saturn has a density less than water. The entire planet would float if it was placed on water. Meet the Staff: Mrs. Pupkin If you have ever wandered into the guidance office, you have likely met Mrs. Pupkin. The guidance secretary for seven years, Mrs. Pupkin does it all in the Westbury Middle School. Ever wonder who prints out your schedules? That s Mrs. Pupkin! Ever wonder who reminds the teachers to type in your grades? That s Mrs. Pupkin! Her willingness to help out the students and faculty with anything makes her an important part of our school. by Courtney Murdaugh On Thursday, October 31 st, the Yes We Can Center held its annual Halloween party for the Westbury community. For the guests, they provided pizza and orangeade to eat and drink. There were many activities for guests of any age to enjoy. For example, there was an arts and crafts center for kids where they were able to design their own wreath out of However, after leaving Westbury Middle School for the day, Mrs. Pupkin looks forward to spending her time reading a good book, taking her dog for walks, and even going to the beach. In the spirit of the holiday season, we asked Mrs. Pupkin, What are you looking forward to most this Thanksgiving? She replied, Spending time with my three daughters, Serena, Emma, and Leah. I also am looking forward to my daughter s Cheddar Biscuits. They are amazing! Yes We Can Center Halloween Party by Ms. Label Students in Physical Education are getting serious about their health and fitness. That s why each month during the school year we are focusing on an exercise that students and even faculty can practice each day at home. It only takes a few minutes of your day and it s fun! construction paper. For guests and ghouls who wanted to show off some of their dance moves, the DJ put on the Cha-Cha Slide, the Wobble, the Cupid Shuffle, and various other popular songs. At the end of the party, the hosts handed out take-home bags which contained candy and little toys for every guest. It was a great party to attend! Work off that Thanksgiving Feast with some helpful health tips! In November we are working on our flexibility with the v- sit and reach. It may seem like a simple exercise, but it can be challenging for many who don t regularly stretch the muscle in the back of the legs called the hamstring. If you practice this one every night, you will definitely see a difference in your flexibility! The V-Sit and Reach stretch is also part of the Fitness Gram Fitness Test coming this winter. So let s start stretching!!

: SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES page 3 WESTBURY FOOTBALL S FALL FINISH: LANCERS OVERWHELM MINEOLA MIDDLE SCHOOL In their final game of the season, the Westbury Lancers wanted to claim one last victory. Joshua Rooks-Grant led the team with 3 touchdowns on the ground. Sean Hairston dominated the opposition with 150 yards rushing and a 60 yard touchdown run. Tyson Walker also added 50 yards on the ground. IT S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE WINTER SPORTS!
