There were three main areas that finished well above normal: southwest, east central and especially far southeast, where some places had twice the amount of normal precipitation. The most rain fell in the far southeast corner, where Caledonia saw 11.17 inches or 6.15 inches above normal. One of the driest locations was near Tower in northeast Minnesota with 1.28 inches of rainfall for the month, or 2.55 inches below normal. The preliminary statewide average was 4.12 inches or.24 inches above normal. This was heavily weighted to the excessive precipitation totals in the southeast. Many locations elsewhere in the state saw below normal precipitation for the month. The driest conditions in the state are in northwest Minnesota. The US Drought Monitor on August 28 depicted 9% of the state with moderate drought. The northern third (27%) of the state was abnormally dry. Stream conditions in August were similar to July. A majority of the stream gages in the southern two thirds of the state were Above Normal (75-90 th percentile) or High (greater than 90 th percentile). Gages in the northern third of the state were mostly Normal (25-75 th percentile). Five gages (four in the northwest, one in the northeast) ranked Below Normal (10-25 th percentile) and two gages, both in the northwest, ranked Low Flows (<= 10 th percentile). In, 56% of the lakes were in the Normal percentile, 22% were Above Normal or High percentiles, and 22% below normal or low. Over 50% of the above average lakes reported elevations more than ½ foot higher than their average. After a decrease in lake levels for most of the month, there was a slight bounce in many lakes with end of the month rainfall. Groundwater levels in broadly show normal to higher than normal levels throughout much of the state for selected monitoring sites. This pattern was especially prevalent throughout Eastern portions of the state. Higher than average water levels were detected for bedrock, buried artesian, and water table aquifer wells. Low groundwater levels were predominantly found in Western and Southern areas of the state. Comparisons with precipitation map may provide some insight into this month s figures. The information in this report is provided by DNR through long term programs committed to recording and tracking the long term status of our water resources. The current conditions of precipitation, stream flows, lake levels and ground water levels in this report provide valuable information for natural and economic resource management on a state, county and watershed level.
