Phil Martelli is in his 16th year as Saint Joseph s head coach, and his 26th year on Hawk Hill. The coach needs six wins to reach 300 for his career, and the 24th game he coaches this year will be his 400th. He also owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches, with 146. The Hawks are 12 3 in A 10 openers and have won three of the last four. Leading scorer Carl Jones has scored double figures in 12 of 13 games this year, with five games of 20 plus points. Freshman C.J. Aiken ranks eighth in the nation in blocked shots and leads the Atlantic 10 with 3.3 per game. SJU is fielding its youngest team ever under Phil Martelli with two seniors, one junior, four sophomores and five freshmen. The opening day starting lineup included three freshmen, which is the most ever under Martelli. This is only SJU s fifth game at Hagan Arena this season. The Hawks are 2 2 on their homecourt. PHIL MARTELLI Head Coach Now in his 16th season as Saint Joseph s University head coach, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post season participant and a key player on the national scene, while earning his place among the top coaches in the school s storied history. The 2010 11 season marks his 26th year at SJU, including 10 years as an assistant coach. His career mark now stands at 294 195, while he ranks fifth in career winning percentage (.601) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season (30) in 2004, Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories six times in 15 seasons. He is 146 94 in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A 10. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference, or regional honor, in six of his 15 seasons. Martelli faced a challenge in 2009 10 with a young and inexperienced squad that went 11 20, coming off a 2008 09 season that saw the Hawks go 17 15 for his ninth consecutive winning season. Among the highlights of 08 09 was Ahmad Nivins earning AP Honorable Mention All America honors and becoming the third Hawk in six years to garner the Atlantic 10 s Player of the Year Award. Nivins was also chosen by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2009 NBA Draft, becoming the third player coached by Martelli to be drafted. The 2007 08 Hawks reached the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the third time in four years and earned the program s 19th bid to the NCAA Tournament, and Martelli s fifth. The 11th seeded Hawks fell to sixth seeded Oklahoma in the NCAA First Round, while ending the year at 21 13. Martelli reached a significant milestone in 2006 07, when he surpassed Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second place on the school s all time list for wins (236), while guiding a young squad to 18 wins. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.653 postseason winning percentage (17 9) and has taken SJU to the postseason in seven of the last nine years, and nine times in his 14 seasons. Martelli turned in another top notch coaching performance in 2005 06, as the Hawks went from a 10 12 record to win eight consecutive games to reach the Atlantic 10 championship game for the second year in a row. In 2004 05, Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in 2003 04 when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first round draft picks, the 2004 05 Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli guided SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish 24 12. Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14 2), won its fifth straight regular season title to tie the league record, earned the A 10 s top seed and reached the title game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. SJU made an exciting six game run in the NIT, falling on a last second shot in the championship game. In 2003 04, Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball. The Hawks went undefeated in the regular season, reached the pinnacle as the top ranked team in the nation and earned the school s first ever number one seed in the NCAA Tournament, while advancing to the Elite Eight. Jameer Nelson was the consensus National Player of the Year and with teammate Delonte West, were both first round selections in the NBA Draft. SJU opened the season ranked 12th in the polls and moved up throughout the year, taking the top spot on March 8, 2004, for the first time ever, while finishing fifth in the polls, for SJU s highest final ranking since 1966. Martelli joined with Nelson to sweep the national coach and player awards, marking one of the few times in history that the top player and coach were from the same school. In addition to the national awards, he was the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the third time and a repeat winner of the Big 5 Coach of the Year. Martelli s commitment to Saint Joseph s is equaled by the University s commitment to him. The coach agreed to a new contract prior to the 2003 04 season and then in September 2004, the University extended the coach s contract through the 2011 12 season. In October 2008, the commitment was taken a step further, when his contract was extended through 2015 16. He served as head coach of the 2005 USA Under 21 World Championship Team, which finished in fifth place finish at the FIBA U21 World Championships. A 1976 graduate of Widener, Martelli began his career on Hawk Hill with SJU's 1985 86 NCAA Tournament team. After 10 years as an assistant at Saint Joseph s, Martelli was named the 14th coach in school history on July 20, 1995, and just the third non alumnus to follow in the storied tradition of SJU coaches. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season (1995 96) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. He followed that in 1996 97 with the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles, along with a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School and had a stint as assistant coach at Widener, helping guide the Pioneers to the 1978 NCAA Division III Final Four. As a point guard at Widener, he was part of the NCAA Tournament teams in 1975 and 1976, and set the school's single season and career assist marks. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Robert Morris University, and Elizabeth is a 2009 graduate of Saint Joseph s. 2010 11 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 4 LAST TIME OUT: Carl Jones scored 17 points to lead four Hawks in double figures as Saint Joseph's held off Siena, 58 48, in a New Year's Eve game at Hagan Arena. It was SJU's second win in a row and just its first home game since December 8. Justin Crosgile added 11 points and Langston Galloway and C.J. Aiken each contributed 10 points. Aiken also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots.the Hawks held a 27 23 lead at halftime, but saw Siena go on a quick 6 0 run to take a 34 33 lead with 14:37 to play. But Saint Joseph's would outscore the Saints 10 2, paced by five points from Galloway, to regain the lead, 43 36 at 11:08. A 3 pointer by Siena's Rakeem Brookins pulled the visitors within 43 41 at 8:22. Saint Joseph's answered with a 5 0 run, ending with a tip in by Aiken, to give the Hawks a 48 41 edge. Aiken would then register two more points and two blocks on consecutive possessions to help SJU maintain the 50 43 lead. The home team converted 6 of 8 free throws in the final 37 seconds to preserve the win, despite shooting 36.2 percent from the field and 22.7 percent from 3 point range (5 of 22). SJU committed a season low five turnovers in the contest. FOR OPENERS: Saint Joseph s is 12 3 in Atlantic 10 openers under Phil Martelli, and has won three of the last four. The Hawks dropped last year s opener to #25. 1500 CLUB: With two more victories, Saint Joseph s will reach 1,500 wins in the program s history. The Hawks currently own a 1,498 995 record in 102 seasons. SJU will become one of 35 programs to reach the plateau. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: Saint Joseph s recorded a season low five turnovers against Siena last Friday. It marked the fourth straight game in which the Hawks had less than 10 turnovers. On the year the Hawks are averaging 12.2 per game. IT S HERE: The all important conference season is upon the Hawks and SJU will be looking to get off to a better start than last year, when it went 1 3. The Hawks played three of the four on the road and lost to, defeated Fordham, and then dropped games to Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure. SJU finished the conference season with a 5 11 record. JONES IN : Carl Tay Jones has recorded double figures in 12 of 13 games and has scored 20 plus points five times, including a career best 29 points vs. Minnesota. He had a 13 game scoring streak, which dated back to last year, come to an end at Holy Cross. Jones leads the Hawks with his 17.9 scoring average, while ranking fifth in the A 10. LANGSTON S LINE: Freshman Langston Galloway has been putting up solid all around numbers for the Hawks. He recorded a season best of 24 points at Boston University, while making 6 of 8 from 3 point range. He currently ranks second on the team in scoring (12.5), but leads the team in rebounding (5.6), assists (3.0), free throw percentage (92.3) and assist/turnover ratio (3.0). in Florida. He averaged 10 points and four rebounds for a team which had four Division I signees. WELCOME HOME: This marks just the Hawks fifth game in Hagan Arena this season, with SJU in the middle of a three game homestand. SJU has played in Philadelphia six times this year, counting the game vs. Rutgers at The Palestra. The Hawks will be rewarded for their early season travels as they will play all but two games in Philadelphia during the month of January. SJU is 2 2 this year at Hagan Arena. RINGING OUT THE OLD: Saint Joseph s was definitely ready to ring in a New Year and say goodbye to 2010. In the past calendar year, the Hawks went 12 21. THE DEAN: Phil Martelli leads the current coaches in the Atlantic 10 in all time conference wins with 146. Jim Baron of Rhode Island trails Martelli with 126. The Hawks mentor is the longest tenured coach at one school currently in the A 10 now in his 16th year at SJU. BACKCOURT BOOST: The backcourt of Carl Jones and Langston Galloway combined to score 50 of the Hawks 73 points vs. Minnesota, while also totalling nine of the team s 13 assists and seven of the 10 steals. The duo made all nine of the team s 3 pointers and 14 of the 25 field goals. At Boston University, Jones and Galloway combined for 45 points and eight 3 pointers, with Galloway making six of them. BLOCK PARTY: Freshman C.J. Aiken had six blocks in the second half in the win at Fairfield, which was the highest total for a Hawk since Ahmad Nivins had the same number at UMass on Jan. 9, 2008. Langston Galloway added three in the game as the Hawks totalled 11 blocks, which was the most since they had 10 vs. Syracuse on Nov. 13, 2007. Aiken upped his season best with seven blocks at Villanova. He is averaging 3.3 per game to lead the Atlantic 10 and rank eighth in the nation. As a team, the Hawks top the A 10 with 5.2 per game and rank 32nd in the NCAA stats. JUST IN TIME: Sophomore Justin Crosgile has upped the level of his play over the past few weeks. At Creighton, he had a then season best 15 points, hitting 3 of 5 3 pointers. And two games later at Holy Cross, he helped SJU end its six game losing streak by scoring a career high 19 points. Crosgile connected on a personal best 5 of 6 3 point field goals while going 5 for 9 from the field. Coach Phil Martelli attributes it to the way Crosgile practices, saying, At Creighton, Justin was really good, because he practiced really well. At BU, he was really bad (2 points), because he practiced badly. And he s practiced well the past few days. He s put together back to back games in double figures against Holy Cross and Siena. Last season, Crosgile started the final 19 games of the year and averaged 6.7 points. He has come off the bench in all 13 contests this season. LONG TIME COMING: The win at Holy Cross ended the Hawks six game losing streak and marked their first victory in December. It was SJU s longest skid since a seven game streak in 2008 09. SJU went 2 6 in December after going 3 2 in November. The Hawks have now won two in a row. The longest winning streak recorded by SJU last season was a three games, on two occasions. NEW TO THE NEST: Papa Samba Ndao (pronounced NUH doe) is the newest member of the Hawks. The freshman began attending classes and practicing with the team on December 30 and despite being eligible immediately, he will redshirt the season. Nda, a 6 8, 215 lb. forward who is originally from Senegal, played scholastically at Montverde Academy OUT OF ACTION: Senior Charoy Bentley had an emergency appendectomy on Dec. 15 and has missed the last three games. He has been cleared by doctors and is probable for tonight. Todd O Brien missed the Siena game with a sprained ankle and is questionable for this game. SHORTHANDED: The Hawks had just nine scholarship players available for the Siena game, with Charoy Bentley and Todd O Brien sidelined. NO DOUBLES: The Hawks are yet to record a double double this year as no players have grabbed 10 rebounds in a game. C.J. Aiken came close against Siena with 10 points and nine rebounds.

2010 11 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 5 ROAD WARRIORS: The Hawks have faced a schedule that was frontloaded with away games, as SJU has already played eight on the road, compared to just four at home. Saint Joseph s owns a 2 6 road record with wins at Fairfield and Holy Cross. Last year, the Hawks struggled greatly on the road, winning only one game outside of Philadelphia, at George Washington on March 3, 2010. The good news for SJU is that there are only six games remaining which are outside of Philadelphia. LOSING IT: The Hawks saw two substantial leads disappear at Boston University. SJU held a 9 point margin in the first half, but BU scored the final eight points of the period to close to 39 38 at halftime. Saint Joseph s built up a 12 point lead in the second half, but the home team used a 27 6 run over a nine minute stretch in the period to earn the win. It was the largest lead lost this season by the Hawks. SLOW STARTERS: In a few games this year, the Hawks have started out slowly, only to step up their play in the second half. SJU had fallen behind quickly thanks to 46.7 percent 3 point shooting by the Tigers, and trailed 45 27 at halftime. The Hawks came out like a different team in the second half and held Princeton without a point for over five minutes. SJU cut the deficit to 10 points a few times, but couldn t get any closer until the final margin. Carl Jones scored 15 of his career high 24 in the half while Ronald Roberts provided a spark off the bench, scoring five of his season best 10 points and grabbing six of his seven rebounds in the second half. Saint Joseph s also had one of its best shooting halves, hitting 51.7 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from 3 point range. FROM THE LINE: Free throw shooting has been one of the Hawks strengths as they rank third in the Atlantic 10 in free throw percentage, hitting 71.6 percent. Overall, Langston Galloway is shooting 92.3 percent from the line while Carl Jones is hitting 77.6 percent. REBOUNDING WOES: Rebounding was one of the Hawks biggest weaknesses last year and SJU has shown glimpses of that again this season. In 2009 10, the Hawks were outrebounded in all but four contests and owned a 8.0 margin. This season, Saint Joseph s has been outrebounded in eight games, with the biggest margin being 46 23 at Drexel. On the season, SJU owns a rebounding margin of 3.8. WHIRLWIND TOUR: The Hawks didn t fare too well in their NBA type schedule the week of Nov. 30, losing all three games on the road in a span of five days. SJU lost at Drexel, Villanova and Princeton, making three short trips which had a total round trip distance of 125.2 miles. C.J. The freshman averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 82.3 percent (14 for 17) from the floor and 83.3 percent (5 for 6) from three point range. He scored a season best 20 points on 7 for 8 shooting in the win over Rutgers, handing out a game high assists while committing just one turnover. In a victory at Fairfield, Galloway led the Hawks with 15 points connecting on 7 of 9 shots from the floor while collecting five rebounds, three blocks and two steals. He was the first Hawk to receive a weekly honor this season. TALE OF TWO HALVES: After falling behind to Fairfield by as much as 11 points in the first half, Saint Joseph s certainly had a different look in the second. The Hawks came out quickly, scoring six straight points, including steals and breakaways by Langston Galloway and Carl Jones, to tie the game. SJU shot 68.2 percent in the second half, after hitting just 30 percent in the first. Idris Hilliard, C.J. Aiken and Jones each scored 10 points in the half, but the Hawks did it with defense as well, posting seven steals and nine blocks in the second period. FOR STARTERS: The Hawks starting lineup has been the same in all but one game (Penn State). Idris Hilliard and Carl Jones have been joined by freshmen C.J. Aiken, Daryus Quarles and Langston Galloway in the starting five, giving Phil Martelli his youngest starting lineup ever. WAITING GAME: It took a little longer than usual for the Hawks to get their first win, with it coming in the third game of the season. SJU hadn t gone 0 2 to start the season since 1998 99. LONG RANGE THREAT: Despite the Hawks struggles behind the arc, Daryus Quarles showed that he could be one of SJU s long range threats this year. Quarles went 3 for 3 from behind the arc at Villanova to record 12 points. CLASSIC CHAMPS: Saint Joseph s was crowned as the champion of the Philly Hoop Group Classic, winning all three games against Norfolk State, Fairfield and Rutgers. 2007 for Indiana, Portland, Golden State and Detroit. The father of Ronald Roberts, Jr., Ron, Sr., played basketball at the University of Oklahoma from 1985 to 1987. CAJUN HAWKS: Saint Joseph s has expanded its geographic base and fellow Louisiana natives Langston Galloway and Patrick Swilling become the first two Hawks from that state. FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: Saint Joseph s is sporting one of its most youthful squads in school history, and the youngest under Phil Martelli, with a combined 11 years of college experience entering this season. The Hawks have just two seniors and one junior on the roster. At the start of the season the average age of the SJU squad was 19.8 years old. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: This season, the Hawks will face six teams which reached the NCAA Tournament in 2010 Minnesota,, Siena,, Xavier and Villanova. SJU will also face two teams from the 2010 NIT, Rhode Island and tournament champion Dayton. Two of the Hawks opponents were ranked in the preseason Top 25 (Villanova, ), while Minnesota has been ranked for a few weeks. The Hawks are facing four more schools picked to represent their leagues in this year's tourney. Western Kentucky (Sun Belt), Fairfield (MAAC), Princeton (Ivy League) and Boston University (America East) each topped the 2010 11 preseason coaches polls in their respective conferences. BEYOND THE ARC: SJU has struggled from 3 point range thus far, hitting only 31.2 percent with a low of 16.7 percent at Drexel (1 for 6). Langston Galloway is the Hawks leader with 24 3 pointers made, followed by Carl Jones with 23. NEW FACES: SJU welcomed seven new players into the fold this year, with five freshmen, one sophomore transfer and a sophomore walk on. The Hawks highly touted freshman class consists of C.J. Aiken the Pennsylvania Player of the Year; Langston Galloway an All State selection from Louisiana; Daryus Quarles an All South Jersey honoree; Ronald Roberts an All State selection from Saint Peter s Prep, which was ranked 6th in the nation; and Patrick Swilling another All State honoree from Louisiana. The Hawks transfer is Halil Kanacevic, who was named to the CAA All Rookie Team last season while at Hofstra. Kanacevic will have three seasons of eligibility beginning in 2011 12. Also new to the squad is walk on Taylor Trevisan, who hails from Salesianum High School in Delaware. FIRST CLASS HAWKS: The Hawks freshman class was ranked as the 25th best recruiting class in the nation by MaxPreps. HAWKS AT HAGAN: This marks the second season for the Hawks in the Michael J. Hagan 85 Arena. SJU opened the renovated and expanded homecourt last year on November 13, with an overtime win over Drexel. The arena was the result of a 16 month expansion and renovation of the previous on campus home, Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, which served as the Hawks' homecourt for 59 years. The Hawks posted an 8 4 record in their first year in Hagan Arena, and with a 2 2 record this year, now own an all time record of 329 88 playing on campus. FAMILY TIES: Freshman Langston Galloway is the nephew of assistant coach Geoff Arnold. Patrick Swilling, Jr., who was an AAU teammate of Galloway, is the son of former NFL All Pro linebacker Pat Swilling. The elder Swilling was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010. He played at Georgia Tech in the 1980 s before enjoying a pro career with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions and the Oakland Raiders. Swilling s cousin, Dale Davis, played in the NBA from 1991 to FUTURE HAWK: Chris Wilson, a 6 2 guard, signed a Letter of Intent to attend SJU in the Fall of 2011. Wilson is from Fayetteville, N.C. and Terry Sanford High School. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish 12th in the Atlantic 10 in voting by the league s coaches and media. Freshmen C.J. FUTURE TRAVELS: Saint Joseph s has been announced as one of the eight teams participating in the 2011 Charleston Classic on Nov. 17, 18 and 20 at the Carolina First Arena. IF YOU BUILD IT...: Saint Joseph's basketball opened a new era on November 13, 2010 when the Hawks hosted Drexel in the inaugural game in the Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena. The Arena was the result of a 16 month expansion and renovation of the previous on campus home, Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, which served as the Hawks' homecourt for 59 years. Hagan Arena provides a number of fanfriendly renovations as well as an increase of 1,000 seats from the Fieldhouse, bringing the capacity to 4,200. Michael J. Hagan 85, and his wife, Joyce, are the lead benefactors for the most comprehensive enhancement of athletic facilities in Saint Joseph s history. A 1985 graduate of SJU, he received his bachelor s degree in accounting and was a member of the Hawks golf team. The former chairman and chief executive officer of NutriSystem, Inc., Hagan was named the 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year by Forbes magazine. The Hagans have three children, Michael, Colin and Emma. COMFORT ZONE: Saint Joseph s comprehensive expansion and renovation project also included the building of the 20,000 square foot Ramsay Basketball Center, named for Hall of Fame coach Dr. Jack Ramsay. The Ramsay Center, which is adjacent to Hagan Arena, houses offices for the men's and women's basketball programs; locker rooms and player lounges for both teams; a video study/interview room; and the Athletic Communications Office. CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. A GOOD CAUSE: Phil Martelli is the co chair of the Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer effort, which is one of the nation s highest fundraising groups for Coaches vs. Cancer. The group, which is comprised of the city s six Division I coaches and their wives, raised close to $1 million last year. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University while Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is an assistant at Rutgers University. The elder Martelli faced off against one of his sons for the first time when the Hawks defeated Rutgers on Nov. 26. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the 1954 55 season. Brennan, an ex Marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a 69 56 win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figure eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap ometer on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a tuition scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Tim Higgins is the Hawk mascot this season, and is the 33rd student to wear the wings. He is a senior marketing major from Merchantville, N.J. ON THE AIR TV: Saint Joseph's will have a minimum of 10 games televised this season, including seven that will be seen locally in Philadelphia. Four Atlantic 10 contests will be televised regionally as part of CBS College Sports syndication package. Saint Joseph's will appear on ESPNU on December 3 in the annual rivalry game with Villanova at The Pavilion at 8:30 p.m. while the Hawks' January 29th game with from The Palestra will be seen on ESPNU. The Saint Joseph s Sports Network team of Matt Martucci and Joe Lunardi will provide the play by play and color commentary. Martucci, a 2006 Syracuse University graduate, is in his second year as full time play by play announcer. Lunardi, in his 21st year on the Hawks radio broadcasts, is the assistant vice president for marketing at Saint Joseph s, and is a college basketball analyst for ESPN.com with his popular Bracketology column. (Radio schedule on page 2) HAWKTALK: Phil Martelli s HawkTalk will return for its 15th season in 2010 11. The most unique coach s television show in college basketball, it was named the Best Coach s Show in the Nation by The Sporting News. Martelli s show combines a Tonight Show format with unique guests and just a few basketball highlights. Game 1: November 12, 2010 Hagan Arena Western Kentucky 98 SJU 70 Saint Joseph s lost to Western Kentucky, 98 70, in the season opener at Hagan Arena. Starting three freshmen, the Hawks shot just 33.8 percent in the game while WKU hit 60.9 percent, including a blistering 72.4 percent in the second half. The game was tied 22 22 in the first half, but WKU built up a 48 38 lead by halftime and would lead by 20 points or more in the final 10 minutes. Carl Jones led SJU with 17 points while Langston Galloway had 13 in his debut and Idris Hilliard scored 12. It snapped a streak of five straight openers won by the Hawks. The Hawks trailed in the early going but took their first lead of the game, 20 19, on a jumper by Quarles. Philly Hoop Group Classic SJU 60 Fairfield 51 Langston Galloway had 15 points and C.J. Aiken added 13 points, eight rebounds and six blocks as Saint Joseph's fought off a six point halftime deficit on the way to a 60 51 victory in the Philly Hoop Group Classic at Fairfield. Idris Hilliard (12) and Carl Jones (13) rounded out a quartet of double figure scorers for SJU. Fairfield took the lead in the first half and stretched the advantage to as many as 11 points at 25 14. The Hawks scored the final five points of the period on a pair of free throws by Aiken and a three pointer from Galloway, slashing the deficit to 25 19 at the break. The Hawks burst out of the gates in the second as Hilliard started with a jumper 39 seconds in to cut the margin to four before Galloway and Jones each turned steals into breakaways for a 25 25 tie just 83 seconds into the second period. Jones' layup capped off an 11 0 Saint Joseph's run over 4:25 of game action spanning both halves. In a back and forth contest with no team leading by more than a field goal for much of the second half, the Stags nosed ahead, 45 44, with 6:11 remaining. Saint Joseph's took the lead for good on a layup by Aiken with 5:35 to go that put the Hawks on top, 46 45. SJU then held the Stags without a point until a free throw with just 58 seconds left on the clock. The Hawks answered with free throws from Aiken and Hilliard for their largest lead of the night at 55 46 with 42 seconds to go. Galloway shot 7 for 8 from the field and handed out eight assists. Jones made 7 of 10 from the foul line while Idris Hilliard added 10 points. The Hawks led for most of the first half, but after trailing 22 21, SJU scored the next 11 straight points, keyed by five points each from Jones and Galloway, to take a 33 22 lead. Rutgers used a pair of three pointers to close to within 34 28 at the half. Rutgers cut the Hawk lead to 38 35 early in the second half before Jones connected on a three pointer and made a layup to build the Hawks' lead back to 43 35. A three from Galloway and a layup by Justin Crosgile gave SJU a 50 40 edge at 12:47, its biggest of the half. Back to back Rutgers baskets cut the deficit to 62 61 at 4:19, but Jones Rutgers pulled within a point one more time, but again it was Jones who answered, with two free throws and a layup to give the Hawks a 68 63 edge at 2:58. Carl Jones was the lone Hawk in double figures with 20 points and he connected on SJU's only three pointer on the night, as the visitors were just 1 for 6 behind the arc. Carl Jones led the Hawks with 19 points, and freshman C.J. Aiken blocked a career high seven shots. Down by 20 points in the second half, the Hawks' Daryus Quarles and Charoy Bentley hit consecutive threes during a late 9 0 run that got the Hawks within 11 points, while a jumper by Langston Galloway pulled SJU to 69 60 with 40 seconds to play. But Villanova's Corey Stokes hit two free throws at :33 to provide the final double digit margin.
