Brian Reagan put home the gamewinning goal 1:40 into the third period. Garrett Bartus stopped 24 shots to earn the victory. In game two on Saturday night, UConn needed a third-period goal from freshman Cole Schneider to earn a 1-1 tie. Bartus stopped 36 shots to earn the point in the AHA standings. SCHNEIDER LEADS THE WAY: Freshman Cole Schneider leads the team in scoring with three goals and six points after six games. His 1.00 points per game average stands at 10th in the nation among freshmen. ON THE ROAD AGAIN: After a pair of games at home against Canisius (1-0-1), UConn will now hit the road again for three-straight contests. RIT is led offensively by senior Andrew Favot and junior Tyler Brenner. Favot leads the team with six assist and nine points. Brenner sits right behind with eight points while leading the team with five goals. RIT has utilized three goaltenders in the early part of the season. Senior Jan Ropponen has started four games while boasting a 1-3-0 record based on a 3.27 goals against average and a.904 save percentage. Last season, RIT had a record-breaking campaign as it became the first AHA team to advance to the NCAA Frozen Four. The Tigers lost to Wisconsin in the NCAA Semifinals, 8-1. SIMS SCORES TWO: Freshman Jordan Sims scored a pair of goals in the 3-3 tie at Union (10/28). Sims is the second UConn freshman to score two goals in a game this season after Cole Schneider netted a pair in the 3-2 victory over Army (10/23). MAN DOWN... SO WHAT?: The UConn penalty kill has been sensational in the first four games. The Huskies have allowed just three goals while on the penalty kill. The 90.6-percent mark stands at fourth in the nation. UConn has stopped 48 of 51 shots while on the penalty kill. CONFERENCE OPENER: UConn opened the Atlantic Hockey season with a 3-2 victory over Army on Saturday, October 23. In eight years of AHA play, UConn stands at 3-5 in season openers. YEARLY EVENT: Freshman Cole Schneider tallied a pair of goals against Army on October 23, 2010. It marked the first time a UConn player lit the lamp twice in one game since current sophomore Sean Ambrosie tallied a pair in a 4-3 loss at Bentley on October 23, 2009 REAGAN S THREE POINT NIGHT: Senior defenseman Brian Reagan tallied three points with a goal and two assists in the 3-2 victory at Army on October 23. He was the first UConn player to register three points in a game since Jason Krispel recorded three against Bentley in a 4-3 overtime loss on February 16, 2008. FILLING THE HONOR ROLL: UConn had three players named to the Atlantic Hockey Honor Roll on Monday, October 25. Freshman Cole Schneider, sophomore Garrett Bartus and senior Brian Reagan were all honored for their performances against Army in the AHA opener. Schneider put home two goals, including the game-winner while Reagan added a goal and two assists. Bartus denied 35 shots to earn the victory. 50 POINT MARK: Senior forward Justin Hernandez is closing in on 50 points this season. Hernandez began the season at 43 points and sits at 44 overall. Senior Andrew Olson is UConn s active leader with 64 career points. UCONN TIES NO. 7 MAINE!: The Huskies traveled to Orono, Maine to open the season on October 9 and earned a 3-3 tie in Alfond Arena. Garrett Bartus was sensational in net, stopping 40 of 43 shots, including 15 while on the penalty kill. Bartus denied 18-straight shots in the final 17:53 of regulation into the five-minute overtime period. Connecticut saw goals from Alex Gerke and Miles Winter on the power play. Sophomore Sean Ambrosie scored late in the third to even the score. SOPHOMORE SCORING: The sophomore class has registered 14 points on four goals and 10 assists to lead all classes. The Huskies were led in the opening game by the sophomore class. All three goals were tallied by second-year players. Miles Winter put home the game s opening goal at 3:02 on the power play. Alex Gerke then tallied an equalizer in the second with passes from Winter and fellow sophomore Sean Ambrosie. Ambrosie then scored the game-tying goal later in the third period. The sophomore class combined for six of the team s nine points. at No. 7 Maine (Oct. 9). This is the second time Bartus has eraned the award (March 8, 2010). BARTUS IS BACK: Sophomore goaltender Garrett Bartus returns for his first full season in Storrs. Bartus joined the team midway through last season and finished with a 5-14-1 record. Bartus recorded a 3.26 goals against average based on a.900 save percentage. Bartus broke the UConn single-game save record on Jan. 9, 2010. He stopped 57 of 59 shots in a 2-2 tie at Air force. GERKE GETS IT GOING: Sophomore defenseman Alex Gerke was named to the 2010 Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team after recording four goals and six assists for 10 points. Gerke is UConn s fifth Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team selection. OLSON IN THE RECORD BOOK: Andrew Olson comes into the season ranked seventh all-time with 35 goals in his career. He sits just 11 goals away from the second-place mark of 46 held by Ron D Angelo ( 02). Matt Scherer ( 07) holds the top spot with 62 career tallies. KRISPEL DISHING EM OUT: Senior Jason Krispel has dished out two assists this season and has 46 for his career. He recorded a teamhigh 12 assists last season. He s led the team in assists for two straight seasons, notching 25 in his sophomore campaign. He sits tied for sixth with Ciro Longobardi ( 01) for sixth all-time. Next on the list is Kurt Kamienski ( 03) with 52 assists. His 25 helpers in 2008-09 stand as the second-highest total (Michael Goldkind (27)- 1999-00) in UConn Division I history. BERGIN REACHING THE CENTURY MARK: Senior Stevie Bergin appeared in his 100th career game against Canisius on November 6. EXCELLENCE IN THE CLASSROOM: The Huskies had four players named to the 2010 Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team. In order to earn the honor, players must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the year and in both semesters. Brendan Olinyk ( 10) was chosen for the fourth-straight season. SENIOR LEADERSHIP: Coach Bruce Marshall named his three captains at the end-of-year banquet last season. Seniors Jason Krispel, Andrew Olson and Jeff Sapieha have all been named captains this season. The three seniors have all played over 100 games in their careers. Senior Stevie Bergin was named an assistant captain this past weekend. Coming into the season, only Justin Hernandez joined them in having played 100 games in their first three seasos. WHALERS HOCKEY FEST: The UConn men and women will both compete in an outdoor game during the 2010 Whalers Hockey Fest stationed at UConn s Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. The men will face in-state and conference rival Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. on February 13 before the women face rival and conference foe Providence College at 4 p.m. The Whalers Hockey Fest will host up to 20 outdoor games featuring teams at all levels including high school, prep school, college and professional. MARSHALL REACHES 300-MARK: Head Coach Bruce Marshall reached the 300-win mark for his career last year in dramatic fashion. In the last game of the regular season, UConn came back from down, 2-0, in the third period to defeat Mercyhurst in overtime, 3-2. Marshall finished the season with 301 victories after UConn defeated Bentley, 2-1, in the Atlantic Hockey Opening Round.
