16th August 2012 - Week 5 Term 3 Olympic Day What an awesome day we had last Friday at our Olympic Day. The weather was kind to us and the children really got stuck into the activities. It was a great way to finish off our Olympic study. Thanks to all those who came along to support the children and a special thanks to those parents who helped with the groups during the day, with making flags, facepainting, bandanas and learning about their country. I was really good at rolling the balls at the blue drum. The team I was in was Greece and they were the country to first hold the Olympic Games. By Rhys N I liked all of the games, with my favourite one the stretcher carry. I learnt that Spain in Spanish is Espana. By Carlos I was one of the leaders of Cananda and it was cool because it was my job and Bonnie s to encourage the junior children so we all played as a team. The stretcher carry was fun, but tiring, as I had to carry members of my team for the whole time. By Mea What's happening this Term.. Term 3 22nd August Assembly -2pm Motupipi Hall 27th August Speeches Yrs 3/4 28th August Speeches Yrs 5/6 30th August BOT Meeting 31st August Daffodil Day 31st August Disco 14 September Soccer Tournament Friday Lunches Home made Sausage Rolls $2.50 Choc Banana Cake $1.50 Thanks to Jan and Bonnie for the lunches this week! My team was Canada and Bonnie and Mea were our leaders. They were really good at helping us out. I learnt that the Canadian flag has a red maple leaf on it. By Harriet My team was Great Britain and we worked with Diarmuid. We worked well as a team and got the Bronze medal. India was one of our leaders and she helped us out a lot. By Bo Survey Reminder We have had a 39% response to our survey so far and would really like more so that we get a representative view of our school community. We have decided to extend the closing date until next Friday 24th September and encourage all those who haven t replied to take the time to fill in a survey form. We have attached another hard copy to the newsletter and you can just drop it into the office, send it in with your child or drop it in our letterbox. You can also fill it in online at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/tk9drjv Guitar Assembly Last week Levity s guitar groups performed for us, and it was a great way of reporting back the success of the lessons and the work Levity and the children had been putting in. It was scary at the start waiting to play but it was good to have Levity with us. Once we started playing I was less nervous. I felt pretty proud of myself when we had finshed. By India It was embarrassing when we had to sing our song we wrote in front of the school. It was OK when we played it with Levity but I don t think we were ready for a big audience. I think we need a bit more practice. By Chrystal

Safety at the School Gate There have been a few safety concerns at the school gate recently and I d like to remind parents of the need for care. Often when parents are walking their children to the car they are allowing them to walk or scooter on the edge of the road and at times way ahead and out of their control. If you are parked by the hall please use the side gate as it keeps the children well off the road. Children are not allowed to cross the road on their own. Either drive into the bus bay or walk them to the school gate. Parents at times stop to talk to someone outside the gate and their children stand around the edge of the island in the bus bay, often on the edge of the road. Remember the speed limit is 70km past school and at that speed survival if hit would be unlikely. Could drivers avoid parking on the yellow no parking lines or on the verge on the Pohara side of school as it blocks the bus and car drivers view of the road and they have to edge out onto the road before they can get a clear view of the traffic. There is less congestion once the Wainui bus has left at around 3.15pm, which means parents can pull into the bus bay to collect their children. Most people are vigilant and we all want our children to be safe, however I thought it was timely to remind everyone of the need for care. Check out our new drinking fountain between Rooms 2 & 3. Thanks to Pub Charity for the funding and also to Josie for all the hard work she did to make this happen! Happy drinking!!! Squash Success I entered a squash tournament in Nelson last week and played four games and managed to win two of them. I ve really improved in my serve and backhand so I m doing a lot better. Kynan Soccer Tournament All our Yr 3-6 children will be taking part in a interschool soccer tournament on Friday 14 th September, with games to be held at various schools. There will be separate grades for By Amber R boys and girls and they will compete in Yr 3 / 4 and Yr 5 /6 levels. We will be starting training next week so children will need suitable clothing for sports. Flat Balls If you have a flat sports ball at home that needs pumping up, send it along to school and we will pump it up for you. A Scary Experience Once upon a time I was riding my bike. I felt something lumpy in my gumboot and I put my hand in my gumboot and a spider was crawling up my hand! I screamed, then I ran inside and told mum and she put it in a jar and then put it under a big rock. Some Room 1 Bay Lit Poems and Story Entries Sleeping through Time The air slapped my face as I scrambled over the low graveyard fence. The pearly gray gravestones stood slanting towards the moon. A low creaking sound turned my gaze to a slightly covered gravestone that had fallen backwards and a bleached skull was emerging from it. Mouldy green hair hung limply around the skulls face. She fixed her eerie gaze upon me, I let out a shrill scream! A worm had crawled out of her eye socket and was heading for her mouth. I heard more creaking and several other skulls emerged from the gravestones they turned towards me. Their bony hands grasped around my neck, my breath caught in my throat then everything went black I awoke to find myself covered in dirt. I pushed against it, a strip of light glistened through the earth. I gave it one more shove and I emerged into daylight. I was still in the graveyard but it seemed different? Blue and pink pansies lined the gravestones and the grass was neat and tidy. An archway stood over the entrance. Elderly men and women walked around the graves replacing old flowers with fresh new ones. How long had I slept? My parents, I ll find my parents, they ll help me. I rushed out of the now open graveyard gate.. The Portal I sat down, my eyes gleaming, and began t plan my next amazing experiment. I was only a baby when I was captured and turned into a super scientist but at that time I didn't know what I was capable of. After eleven years I was at the top of my class, well at everything actually. Soon the science fair will be coming up and I have my mind set on winning, like I always do, but I was determined to be the best I could be. I had many different ideas flowing through my brain but finally I had got it, a PORTAL! To where you ask? The MOON! Yes that s it, I ve got it, I said in my mind. When I got home from school I started planning it straight away. I was bursting with ideas. Finally I came up with the design. I started work right away. I collected metal, electrical wires, tools and much more. By the time it was dinner I had already finished the frame of the portal. The next morning I got up really early to start on the wiring, it was a breeze. I had it done in about one hour. The portal was coming along really well even though it had only been one day but I still had two days left to finish my project. The day zoomed along and after SIX HOURS of school it was finally time to go home again. I was straight into my project and this time I actually finished. Well at least the portal! Tomorrow I ll make some sort of device that will give the person who is judging me the ability to breathe while they are on the moon. When I woke up I was so excited I almost passed out because the science fair was tomorrow and I had finished everything, the breathing device, and the portal. It was finally the day of the SCIENCE FAIR and I couldn't wait any longer, the judges came by and looked amazed, I totally knew I was going to win until the UNIMAGINABLE happened!!!!!!!!! By Xanthe - Room 1 Who Am I? Finally, I said to myself, I got to the top of one of the many Himalayan mountains. My guide said to stay low or else the wind would push you off the mountain. But before I knew it the wind picked me up and threw me down to the bottom of the mountain! I lay there in a puddle of blood in the snow. The next morning I strangely woke up as a camel! I started freaking out! Then out of the blue some fat kid wanted to ride on me. He did a belly flop onto my back I thought my guts were going to jump out of my mouth and they did! Died again. This time I woke up as Randy Jaxxon, a famous American singer! It is awesome I am one of the best American singers in the world and I m going to stay that way for a long time.
