This is Raffa s second all-conference selection after being named to the second team last season. Raffa was a preseason first team selection as well this season. The Sea Isle City, N.J., native ended the regular season averaging a team-high and second in the conference 19.0 points per game. He ranked second on the team with 41 assists and 52 steals. He scored 20 points or more in 15 contests and scored in double-figures in all but two games this season. He ranks in the top-30 in the NCAA in scoring and was ranked in the top-10 earlier this season. Raffa ranks eighth in career scoring at CCU despite playing just three seasons. He has 1,447 points in a CCU uniform. He also ranks fifth in the CCU record books for career free throws made with 297. He has led the Chants in scoring 19 times this season including scoring a career-high 34 points against Florida International. He ranks second in the Big South in scoring, sixth in steals, eighth in 3-point field goal percentage, 3-point field goals made and field goal percentage and 10th in free throw percentage. Saturday, March 2, 2013 Charleston Southern 75, Coastal Carolina 64 LAST TIME OUT CHARLESTON - Senior guard Anthony Raffa and sophomore guard Warren Gillis led all scorers with 23 and 19 points, respectively, but it was not enough to overcome the sharp-shooting Buccaneers of Charleston Southern University at home. The Bucs used 15 3-pointers to take a 75-64 victory over the Chants inside the CSU Field House. The win improves CSU s record to 17-11 and 12-4 in the Big South Conference. With the win, the Bucs became the inaugural Big South Conference South Division Regular Season Champions. The Chants record falls to 14-14 overall and 9-7 in Big South action. Raffa led the Chants with 23 points while going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed six rebounds. Gillis had 19 points while going 8-of-11 from the floor and snagging four boards. Freshman Tristian Curtis gave the Chants a spark off the bench in the second half scoring nine points in just 11 minutes of action while going 4-of-4 from the field. Freshman Michel Enanga led the Chants with seven rebounds while seniors Kierre Greenwood and Raffa each had six. The Chants shot 48.0 percent from the field while hitting just 3-of-16 from 3-point range. The Bucs on the other hand shot 45.2 percent from the field including 15-of-34 from long range. Coastal opened the game with a fury as the Chants went on an 11-0 run over the opening three minutes of action. The run would be short lived as the Bucs answered with 15-3 run that featured three 3-pointers. The action would go back-and-forth until back-to-back 3-pointers around the eight minute mark gave CSU a 23-17 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers around the three minute mark extended the Bucs lead to 11 but Raffa would close out the half with a 5-0 run of his own to cut the lead to eight at half time. The Bucs first basket of the second half was a three that extended their lead to 11 and the Chants would never cut the lead back to single digits the rest of the way. The Bucs would push their lead to as much as 20 points in the second half but a 6-0 run by the Chants to close out the game cut the deficit to 11 as time expired. VMI was the last team to hold the Chants without a three as Coastal went 0-9 from 3-point range Dec. 1, 2011. OPENING UP STRONG The Chanticleers have won just one game this season when trailing at the half and are 12-5 when leading at the break. The Chants lone win where they trailed at the half came against Akron in an overtime thriller to open the season. DOUBLE THE FUN For just the fourth time in program history, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have two 1,000-point scorers on the same team. The first occurrence was during the 1987-88 season when William Calvin and Derek Wilson played the final four games of the season when both had 1,000 or more career points. During the 1990-91 season the Chants played seven games with three 1,000-point scorers including Brian Penny, Robert Dowdell and DuWayne Cheatam. Near the end of the 2006-07 season Jack Leasure and Moses Sonko played 11 games together after both hitting the 1,000-point milestone. Seniors Kierre Greenwood and Anthony Raffa have played 15 games together as 1,000-point scorers becoming the longest running duo of 1,000-point scorers in CCU history. Robert Dowdell and Brian Penny held the record at 14 games prior to this season. DOMINATING THE CLASSROOM Freshman forward Uros Ljeskovic had an eventful fall semester. The honor was Raffa s first weekly honor in a Coastal uniform and it was the first Player of the Week honor for a Coastal men s basketball player since Feb. 7, 2011, when Desmond Holloway was given the award. Raffa had a tremendous game in Coastal s debut in The HTC Center. He tallied 27 points, eight rebounds and two steals and hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the 74-70 overtime victory over Akron. He single-handedly recorded a 5-0 run to open up the second half and retake the lead from the Zips, as Coastal was previously ahead at the 8:20 mark of the first half. With less than three minutes to play in the game, Raffa hit a 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game. In overtime, Raffa once again delivered from deep to extend the Coastal lead to four, then nailed a three with 1:06 to play to push the Chanticleer advantage to five. Raffa added a free throw with two seconds left in overtime to give CCU the final margin. Big South Regular Season Championships: 1988*1989*1990*1991*2010*2011
