The Gringo When questioned regarding the vigour shown on the gelding over the final 600m jockey L. Rolls stated that his mount settled at the rear of the field and approaching the 600m the field commenced to work away from it. L. Rolls stated that his mount at no stage felt comfortable on the soft tack conditions, being inclined to blunder and change legs, and for this reason he only niggled his mount it along from the 600m in an effort to keep it on the bridle and have it work into the race. L. Rolls stated that rounding the home turn he directed his mount wide into what he believed was better going in the hope that his mount would let down. L. Rolls stated that he was unable to place his mount under full pressure from the entrance to the straight to approaching the 200m when no run presented. L. Rolls added he did not want to shift in closer to the rail at this stage, in an effort to obtain clear running, as he felt this going was inferior and his mount had shown him it was not handling the soft track conditions. L. Rolls added that approaching the 200m he was eased out around the heels of It s Wanted which had commenced to weaken quickly to obtain clear running. L. Rolls stated that over the final 150m he did use his whip on his mount however predominantly used hands and heels pressure as his mount felt to be responding best to this riding on the soft conditions. Steve s Surprise Prior to the declaration of correct weight stewards considered an application by the geldings rider, M. Paget, to have it declared a non starter alleging his mounts rear gates were not fully closed and it was not fully in its barrier as the start was effected resulting in the gelding blundering on jumping. After viewing official video footage, and taking evidence from all relevant parties, stewards established that when the gelding was loaded into its barrier the hind gates were not closed immediately. Stewards were satisfied that by the time the start was effected this was sufficiently rectified. Further, stewards were of the opinion that prior to the start being effected the gelding was standing in its barrier with its fore legs and nose in line with the majority of runners engaged and the gelding began with the field before blundering on its own accord. As the stewards were of the opinion the gelding had been afforded a fair start M. Paget s application was denied and correct weight declared. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding jockey M. Paget stated after blundering at the start his mount was obliged to work hard in the early stages to establish a forward position consistent with its normal racing pattern. M. Paget added that he felt the 4
work his mount had to do in the early stages were to its detriment over the latter stages of the event. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding did not reveal any abnormality.
