ANNUAL TELLICO LAKE BLESSING OF THE FLEET Sponsored by Saturday, 27 April 2013 at 10:30 OPEN TO ALL VESSELS ON TELLICO LAKE The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The practice is predominantly Catholic and a blessing from the local priest was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season. However, both the ancient Greeks and Romans held elaborate ceremonies when their ships were christened, not much different from our ship launches of today. Parties were held, toasts of wine to the honored deity, a blessing from the high priest, and water poured over the boat, were the basic events of the ceremony. Any deviation from these events were considered a bad omen, with the result being a tragedy at sea. Poseidon, who was considered the God of the Sea, as well as earthquakes and horses, was a favorite of the Greeks to ask for protection. The Romans preferred Neptune, who was also considered a God of the sea. Some Native American, who painted symbols or animals on their canoes, also held launch ceremonies consisting of feasts, prayer amd blessings. After the ceremony, join the revelry at the Tellico Village Pavilion on Tugaloo Lane for food and drinks and friendship. Cost:$6 and bring a dish to share. TCC Burgee Program Have you noticed all those burgees hanging above the lower level bar at the Yacht Club? Ever wonder where they came from or what they represent? Sharing and swapping burgees is a longstanding practice among yacht clubs and your TCC is responsible for implementing this program here at the Tellico Village Yacht Club. The idea originated back in 2005, when past member Tom Roberts realized that many of our members had belonged to other yacht clubs or boating organizations prior to moving to TN. These members were proud of their past associations their and wanted to display their burgees for everyone to enjoy. So, Tom worked with then First Officer, Ned MacDonald, to implement the program. A Burgee Book was developed which included a photo and documentation on each burgee. Then working with the Yacht Club staff, they arranged to display the burgees around the bar in the lower level. Next time you're in the Yacht Club, stop by the lower level and take a look at the burgees. We think you'll agree that they add a nice "boating" feel to the Yacht Club. The Burgee Book is kept in the TCC display cabinet and is available for viewing during our regular meetings. And, if you have a burgee from a yacht club or boating organization that you belonged to, and would like to include it in our display, please contact Past Commander Ned MacDonald or the TCC Executive Committee.
