Volunteer Programme Nature and Coastal Wilderness Conservation Eastern Cape, South Africa

Overview The Sibuya Game Reserve Volunteer Programme offers the unique and exciting opportunity to get behind the scenes and involved with the Conservation efforts of the Game Reserve with highly qualified Guides running and hosting the Programme. Wildlife Conservation Volunteers will take part in Surveys/Studies covering a variety of wild animals including Rhino, Lion and other predators, Birds and Insects, tracking indigenous small, as well as large animals, Elephant impact monitoring and habitat Conservation. The stunning meandering Estuary with its pristine beaches nearby is also a large drawcard for Marine exploration, Study and Surveys. Volunteers will also be part of various up-lifting projects in surrounding Communities. Programmes will run from 1 to 4 weeks (please enquire for group bookings and longer programmes).

Project details Estuaries (Kariega/Bushmans) The nearby Rivers are being monitored on a regular basis to provide research with much needed information about species population densities, occurrence of critically endangered species such as the Estuarine Pipefish (Syngnathus watermeyeri), salinity levels and water temperatures. Volunteers will be spending time collecting data first hand, as well as helping to reduce the amount of plastic pollution by actively removing it from the rivers in co-operation with local schools in the surrounding communities. Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, Lion and, if lucky the elusive Leopard Regular monitoring and observation enable us to identify individuals, compile information about the family/herd structure and determine feeding habits. Data collected is used to assist in the management decisions of the Reserve.

Rhino-watch Perform Anti-poaching night-patrols and learn more about their importance and protocol through night drives and sleep-outs on the Reserve that assist in Sibuya s Anti-Poaching Unit efforts. During daylight hours contribute towards the cause by assisting with fence and road monitoring. It should be noted and understood that Volunteers on Rhino-watch assist in Anti-poaching by provision of visible deterrent through their presence only. Game Counts and Botanical Surveys Annual game counts are conducted to establish the carrying capacity of the Reserve to ensure the ratio is not exceeded and to establish if control measures are needed. Game counts assist in the decision making of predator to prey ratios and the movement of animals on the Reserve. Vegetation transects and data collection for monitoring and calculation of game carrying capacity. This will also aid in establishing density and species diversity in the different vegetation areas.

Camera Traps and Track stations Monitoring of nocturnal and elusive species such as Aardwolf, Spotted Genet, Caracal, Leopard, Aardvark and many more, are exciting experiences. Restoration & Rehabilitation of Reserve Landscapes A need to return the once pristine landscape to its original splendor includes the collection and removal of old fence lines and rehabilitation of degraded and overgrazed land. The monitoring of these areas is also of great importance. Alien Plant Control Alien plants were introduced to the land by the farmers of old for different reasons and uses. Today these invasive plants need to be removed to increase the natural biodiversity and to decrease fire risk.

Climatic Condition Monitoring Climatic condition records, such as daily minimum and maximum temperatures and rainfall datacollection. Community Projects Conservation does not stop at conserving Nature alone, but also includes a responsibility to uplift local and impoverished Communities. This responsibility includes environmental education of the Community as to the role and benefit of conserving biodiversity and further stresses the importance of conserving our natural resources. Regular trips are made into the local Community to raise awareness and assist in various Community Projects that range from creating recycling initiatives and beach/estuary clean-ups, to educating by setting up and assisting in Eco-educational School projects.

Schedules Volunteer Conservation work runs from Monday to Friday daily but may vary as required by Reserve operations or Anti-Poaching activities. Days will generally be divided into 2 parts: Morning: focus will be on eradicating alien vegetation, assisting with game capture when required, fence patrols, etc. Afternoon: Volunteers will conduct various Surveys/Studies (see above), tracking animals or join the Community-projects. This beautiful 58 hectare property overlooks a panoramic view of deep valleys and rolling hills with the ocean and bush as a magnificent backdrop. Accommodation at the Lodge with its bird-hide and expansive grounds, sparkling swimming pool and outdoor BBQ area, create a great space in which to relax during free-time. Much of the Volunteer Programme will take place at nearby Sibuya Game Reserve a short drive away and excursions from Intaka Lodge to the Reserve and surrounds will be part of the daily schedule, depending on planned activities.

Free-Time Volunteers will have access to all 58 hectares surrounding Intaka Lodge, including the tranquil gardens, pond with bird hide, short hiking trails, large inviting swimming pool, communal TV, Wi-Fi, pool table and in the evenings, a cozy boma fire.
