UIL REGION 24 MARCHING CONTEST October 17, 2015 Director's Information Welcome: Let me start by saying how pleased we are to be hosting the 15 th UIL Marching Contest for Region 24 in C/FB at Standridge Stadium. I am the Chairperson for this contest and should you have any questions or if I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to give me a call at (972) 768-5656 or email me at jim.mcdaniel8374@gmail.com PHYSICAL ADDRESS OF STANDRIDGE STADIUM I thought I would give you the physical address of Standridge Stadium so that if you choose to, you may go to mapquest.com and get directions. STANDRIDGE STADIUM 1330 W. VALWOOD PARKWAY CARROLLTON, TX. 75006 FORM 1's Directors must remember to bring with you a Form 1 on the day of Marching Contest. These will be picked up by your band guide and brought up to the contest office upon your arrival. Director Check-In (Please check map to verify location!) To facilitate movement and overall operation, each band will have a guide provided by the Newman Smith Band Club. Your guide will have access to radios, which can communicate with the contest office. Please check in at the Director Check-In located near your parking area. Your guide will meet with you when you arrive and accompany you from warm-up to field exit positions. Checking Out/Trophies/Judging Sheets At the conclusion of your show, Directors ONLY may come to the Press Box where there will be a room with your critique sheets. Directors are welcome to look over them but will not be checked out until after the 5A, or 6A ratings are announced or at the conclusion of the contest. We ask that you NOT stay in the Press box. It has become too crowded for us to be able to run the contest and also accommodate the needs of our judges. We encourage you to stay and watch other bands perform during the day. At the conclusion of these times trophies, judges CD s, critique sheets and necessary forms will be completed with directors. Map/Parking Please review the maps enclosed for directions to and at the stadium. Both a close up and wide view of the area to help with driving instructions to the stadium and a parking map would be good to give to all drivers. The Director/Band map shows all band movements and details for warm-up, etc. Please note location on map. Buses and pit equipment/prop trucks will park on the east side of the stadium. All cars (assistants, parents, spectators) will park on the south and west side of the stadium (handicap parking is available on the west side). Parking is free and there will be parking coordinators to assist all traffic entering the stadium lots. If you have any trouble on the way to the contest, you may contact the contest office at my cell phone (972) 768-5656. All instrument unloading should be done where the buses park on the east side. If you have a dedicated instrument trailer, it should be parked where your buses are parked and unloaded with your students. Music & Arts Music & Arts Music will be on site to help in case of needed emergency repair. This is a free service provided by Music & Arts. Please take the time to say thank you to these folks. 1

Warm-up Your guide will lead you to the warm-up area. There are separate areas designated for colorguard and drumline/pit. It is very important that warm-up is done only in the designated areas west of the yellow/black-taped line on the parking lot. All brass and metronomes must be facing west. This is done to insure there is no bleed over sound into the judging area at the top of the stadium, which will affect how well they can judge each band. Every band will benefit from this. Drum Line/Pit: The drum line/pit will warm-up across the street from the fire station to the west, please review the enclosed map. They may not warm-up with the band. Ready Position/Timing/Performance Ready position is on the northwest side of the stadium. There is a large parking area and plenty of room. Please note the time you enter the field and your performance time. You have 5 minutes to take the field. The announcer will introduce your band. The introduction will be: TO BE READ WITHOUT AUGMENTATION Opening Script (to be read with 45 seconds remaining on the 5- minute clock) THE (FIRST, NEXT, FINAL) BAND IN CONFERENCE (6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A) IS THE (insert school name) HIGH SCHOOL BAND. THEIR PROGRAM (IS ENTITLED or INCLUDES): (Director provides brief description here show description must be completed prior to 20 seconds remaining on clock. Edit as necessary.) (With 20 seconds remaining on the 5-minute clock the announcer will read the next statement, which begins with Drum Majors. The remaining 20 seconds may be kept on the stadium clock or on a stopwatch. However, the 5-minute clock will be run to 0:00 and then the 8-minutes clock will begin immediately.) DRUM MAJORS, (insert name[s] here) YOU MAY BEGIN YOUR PERFORMANCE FOR THE (one of the following): 1. UIL REGION (insert region number) MARCHING BAND CONTEST. 2. (PRELIMS or FINALS) OF THE UIL AREA (insert area letter) MARCHING BAND CONTEST. 3. (PRELIMS or FINALS) OF THE UIL STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP.THE OFFICIAL TIME is kept by the timekeeper in the press box. Please keep in mind the UIL C&CR Section 1105(g) concerning PERFORMANCE REGULATIONS AND GUIDELINES: 1. Performance Time: Each competing band must occupy the football field for not less than five nor more than eight minutes. Any band which leaves the field in less than five minutes or fails to complete its' performance in eight minutes shall be penalized one rating. 2. Movement to Field Position: The contest chair will determine the ready position each band will assume prior to entering the field of competition. The position must provide efficient and prompt access to the football field without interfering with other bands as they perform. This location will be clearly described in the marching contest packet. 3. Official Time. The official time for each band will be kept according to the following guidelines: (A) The contest chair will designate an official timekeeper. (B) Bands will be scheduled with five minutes between performances and a maximum of fifteen minutes per band. (C) Bands may use the five minutes prior to their performance in any way they deem appropriate in order to assume their starting position and prepare for the beginning of their show. Activities may include warm-up and/or cadence. (D) Each band will be announced with 45 seconds remaining on the 5-minute clock. The beginning of their announcement will indicate that the performance time shall begin in 45 seconds. (E) The actual timing and adjudication for the show will begin at the end of the five minutes. (F) At the conclusion of its performance the post script will be read while each band will have two minutes to exit the field and clear the marching surface of all equipment, instruments and props. The use of either instrumental or verbal cadence is optional. A band that fails to be clear of the field (outside the sidelines or endlines) or continues to use instrumental or verbal cadence at the end of the two minutes will be disqualified. 2

(G)A band leaving equipment or instruments on the sideline in such a manner that these items impede the movement of the next band into its starting position is subject to penalty in accordance with Subchapter E. Section 1105 (g) Electronic Equipment provision: 4. Electronic Equipment: Electronic equipment may be used under the following provisions: (A) All electronically produced music including narration and sound effects must be performed live and in real time by eligible students. (B) Pre-recorded music, instrumental or vocal, may not be used. (C) The placement of electronic units must comply with the 5-minute set up and 2-minute tear down limitation. 5. Amplification of instruments or voice may be used with the following restriction: (A) All equipment, such as mixers, sound boards, etc. must be operated by eligible students. (B) AC power cords and AC supplied amplification units must be located outside the sidelines and endlines. (C) The placement of amplification units must comply with the 5-minute set up and 2-minute tear down limitations. (D) Wind instruments may be amplified only for solo/or small ensemble features. 6. Violations will be subject to penalties in accordance with Section 27 and Section 29. 7. Judges will be expected to address the appropriateness and frequency of use of electronics and amplification as as a part of the adjudication process. Local Ground Rules: Failure to comply with local ground rules and regulations outline by and/or approved by the region executive committee may be cause for disqualification or other penalties as listed in Subchapter R. Such rules must be sent to all participating schools at least 14 days prior to the contest date. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU INDICATE THAT YOUR SHOW IS OVER NO LATER THAN 8 MINUTES. This is so that the Time Keeper and the Judges will have no doubt as to when the show ended. You will then have two minutes to exit the field completely. Your Drum Major may give a verbal cadence or you may use a soft snare or bass drum tap as you exit. Please do not use a drum cadence. The field coordinator will signal the pressbox once you have all members and materials off the field. Field and Stadium Exit Please see stadium map for field exit options. As to not interfere with the performing bands, exiting bands will exit counterclockwise off the field to the east side (visitors side) of the stadium. All participants and staff must walk around the outside of the stadium to return to the home side. Your Pit will exit through the west gate after the entering band has entered the field. Note about Entering and Exiting the field Entering and exiting bands will need to coordinate movement to insure smooth transition. The entering band will cue behind the gate entrance. The entering band's pit will cue in the "pit tunnel" entrance just to the right or south of the gate. If an entering band has large props they may wish to cue them just inside the gate and to the left against the fence. Otherwise props enter with the band. The exiting band will exit off the track either to the home or visitor side and march counterclockwise to the field exit gate to the northeast. The exiting band's pit and props will follow the band and exit thru the east side and back to the trailers for loading. Please see map location. Electricity: If you need electricity for an amplifier, etc., an electrical outlet is located on the stadium wall near the 50 yard line. The field coordinator can assist you with these needs. Please provide your own extension cords (note there is an eightlane track between the stadium wall and the sideline of the field.) 3

Contest Office The contest office is located in the press box and is open to all directors to view your sheets, checkout etc. Elevator in the main concourse area provides access to the press box. Please remember we are asking that you not stay in the press box after viewing your sheets due to being overcrowded in the press box area. Please make sure that only DIRECTORS come to the press box. Food Service on Concourse Level There will be a concession stand open on the main concourse. The concession stand is operated by the Newman Smith Band Club. For eating away from the contest, there is a full array of fast food restaurants along Hwy 35. Vista Ridge, located about 5 miles north on Hwy. 35 and Hwy 3040, has a food court and there are convenient restaurants located at Beltline and Josey. CVP Productions and Pep Wear CVP Productions will be located in the main concourse to take orders from parents/students that want copies of your performance. In addition, Pep Wear will be located in the parking lot on the west side of the stadium to sell UIL patches, etc. First Aid & Water A first aid station is available on the field level, north side of the stadium, near the field entrance area. Water, ice for sprains and normal first aid supplies are available. Water stations will be available before and after your performance. Your band guide will direct you or refer to the map. AREA BANDS (5A) Please remember that you must meet with the Executive Secretary after your classification has finished competition to determine who goes on to AREA. The rule is that at least two bands will go on no matter the ratings. In addition, the Executive Secretary will give you your packets for AREA from Dr. Kent and the packet from the appropriate Region Area Secretary that you will need to enter AREA. 5A Bands = Please meet in the press box at 5:10 (After Ratings are Announced) Best of Luck, J.
