December 2013 THE BLACK SWAN Maroochy Monthly Merry Christmas and welcome to the festive season and the busy end of the Lifesaving season. I would like to start off this Newsletter congratulating all members on 2 fantastic Carnivals hosted here on Maroochydore Beach. The Westpac Junior Carnival and Murphy Builders Maroochy Classic are 2 carnivals that are now on the must attend list for Queensland Competitors. Thanks in particular must go to Carnival Organiser Wade Lee and his big band of workers who made sure the carnivals ran very smoothly from setting up and packing up to catering for Officials, competitors and spectators. Well done to all our competitors at both carnivals, we had some absolutely fantastic results. In particular wasn t it fantastic that both our A Grade Men s and Women s crews walked away with first prize here on our very own beach. Saturday 14 th December we are hosting a round of the Fastest Man on Sand here at Maroochydore. If you have a few spare moments come on down and cheer on your Club mates and see some fantastic events here on our own Beach. Congratulations to Club Members Sam Bell, Pamela Hendry and Danny Short on being part of the Australian Lifesaving Team who won the German Cup, in particular Pamela who broke the world record for the 100m Manikin tow what a fantastic effort. At the Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame Awards at the Sunshine Coast University last week our very own First Aid Coach Lenore Grice was awarded a Certificate of Merit for contribution to Surf Life Saving. What an absolute honour and well deserved. This past week-end Brad Kildey had a group of Parents and kids complete their SRC and in the next couple of weeks Narelle Souter has a group who are completing their Bronze Medallion and will be patrolling our beach before Christmas. Welcome all to our Active Life Saving Club. Special recognition should be given to all those members who made the trek to Toombul Bowls Club our base for the 2013 Surf Rescue Appeal. This is one of the Clubs biggest fundraising events on the calendar raising in excess of $13,000 each year. I can t give you the final figure as we are still waiting on collection tins to come back from a few static points. Well done all for getting behind this fundraising event. Remember all monies raised go towards helping save lives on Maroochydore Beach. Please welcome and make them feel at home our Sister Club from Japan Shimoda who arrive on Friday 13 th December. If you have a few moments to spare say hi or join in with them. Lifelong Australian/Japanese friendships have been made during their visit each year. Chief Training Officer Brad Kildey bkildey@gmail.com 0418793582 With our training calendar in full swing, we now have a number of new ART Operators, Applied First Aid members and 3 new probationary trainers all adding their support to our club. We also have 23 new Nipper CPR Award holders who have now started their journey to being able and qualified to save another person s life, and, 5 brand new SRC members who are now ready to help our young Nippers grow to help others. Congratulations to you all and thank you for giving up your time. There are a number of courses still planned throughout the remainder of the season and although I try to work around many other calendar events, there will be times when it s not possible to completely dodge all events so it s a matter of being patient and planning and prioritizing the awards that you would either like to achieve, or in the case of our competition members, are required to achieve, so please be respectful and appreciative to our trainers who give up their time to further educate and train our lifesavers. New SRC Members Alexandra Thom Water Safety on our training courses can also be a rare commodity so if you are able to help our trainers out here and there it is very much appreciated as well. If you have any questions or queries with regards to courses please give me a call anytime.

With entrants up on last year, the inclusion of the surf boats on Sunday and a hail storm that caused major havoc with the damage to property in the local area, it had everything. 93 of our own competitors took part in the competition and were supported by a work force undaunted by their work load or the hail. Second place this year at our own carnival was a great result and sets the challenge to be the no.1 club on our own beach next year. Our sponsors have shown their faith in our carnival and the club and their ongoing support will ensure the Classic become the iconic carnival we are all working towards.. Congratulations to all the members of the Sunshine Coast Branch Team who took part in the Inter Branch competition and for the 6 th year in succession won the Title, Well done. Sam Bell and Pam Hendry are still overseas with the National Team and we wish them good racing. The State Swimming Titles are being attended by a strong team from our club and we wish them all well in their events. The Club in the holidays will be actively raising the awareness of visitors to the hazards of the water and surf, so keep your ears open for an opportunity to be involved and make a difference to someone s holiday. The Boaties are travelling to Bribie on the 30 th of November for the second round of the Navy Series and will dominate again I m sure at a venue that will test all of their Surf skills. On the 14 th December the Fastest Man on Sand will be held at Maroochydore so come and support our Beach Team and the club. With Nationals just around the corner, I will in the coming weeks send out the information about the trip to Perth and be seeking some commitment to who is going to attend. With shipping containers to organise uniforms and accommodation options to address we will need some idea of numbers. The Oceans 38 series kicks off on the 6 th and 7 th of December at Dicky Beach and with the new format will pose some challenges for our team. The second round is at Broadbeach on the 11 th and 12 th of January, given the location, time of year ( peek holiday ) and the changed format and events on offer I will be sending all the information out to competitors so you can make an informed decision re the carnival. Stay safe over the Christmas break, watch out and care for those close to you, value what you have and be a role model for those you meet. Never sell out your principles or values they are what makes you who you are! ONE CLUB! Club Website Calendar Link Click Here

LIFESAVING NEWS CLIVE HERRALD clive@globalpensiontransfers.com 0407166252 As the year draws to a close I want to pass on a big vote of thanks to all members who have participated in their regular patrols. This season the events calendar is packed and we have had to shuffle a few things around to try to accommodate everyone so they are not rostered when they are competing. You will have to forgive me if there is the odd clash but I did my best to work around them. That said I also want to thank those members who travelled down to Brisbane for the annual doorknock appeal. It was a great success as usual and the funds raised go a long way to helping us keep gear and equipment in top order. We have had a rather windy start to the season as everyone will appreciate but in the last 2 weeks we have unfortunately had 2 rescue boards damaged when the small towers have blown over in the strong wind. Can I ask that whenever the wind gets up that you roll the bottom part of the red and yellow flag to reduce resistance and minimise the possibility of the tower being blown over. The frames have damaged both rescue boards by puncturing them or simply crushing part of the rails. We have a training session on this coming weekend at 1.30 for the ATV. To drive/operate the ATV you must hold a proficiency accreditation. This weekend will give members the opportunity to add this award to their list of awards held and ensure you are able to drive the vehicle as and when needed. Please register with Michelle ASAP if you wish to be assessed this weekend. Also, Don t forget proficiency this coming Sunday at 8am. This is the final proficiency for the year so it is really essential that any members not yet proficient will need to come along and complete proficiency for this season. Don t forget your pool swim certificate and the online part of proficiency if you can complete it as well before Sunday. Finally, Christmas day this year is on a Wednesday and we urgently need volunteers to help out on the day both AM and PM. Mike Dwyer and Steve Dunn have both volunteered as PCs for morning and afternoon shifts but please volunteer if you can spare any time at all. I have resisted rostering a patrol again this year in spite of a critical shortage of volunteers last Christmas day so I am relying on the good nature of everyone to give some time. Yes I know it is Christmas and that is often family time, but people still flock to the beach and expect us to be there keeping the beach safe. Please give some thought and time and help us man the beach this Christmas. Can you register with Michelle or let me know if you are available at all. Volunteers might also receive a nice little surprise for their efforts. Thank you all for your support so far this season and please let me know if you have any ideas of how we can improve any aspect of what we do. Have a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic 2014.

BOATIES GOSSIP BERNIE DUNCAN bernie@bjdvaluers.com.au 0407 718 336 The season has started off with a bang with some great results. In the first round of the Navy Series at Surfers Paradise the Force and Minx won Saturdays Racing on a Point score with the Force backing up Sunday to win Round 1 of the Triple Crown and qualify for the final in the New Year. Wasn t it good to see boats back at our Carnival the Murphy Builders Classic. While a heavy carnival schedule impacted on numbers Sunday, after Saturdays storm, saw a great days racing with Maroochydore winning both Open Finals and taking home the cash. Many thanks to the organising committee for obtaining such generous sponsorship. A new tradition has begun. One of the standout crews of the day was the Force Reserves who were undefeated in five rounds of racing. This United Nations crew includes an Irishman and a Kiwi and will be hard to beat throughout the season. Pat Maguire took two crews to Coffs with both performing well. The under 23 girls coming second in the final and the reggies being knocked out in the semis. Watch for these crews in the latter half of the season as their surf skills improve. Carnivals at Bribie and Southport will see the first half of the season out while the second round of the Triple Crown will be held in Melbourne on the 7 th and 8 th December. Anyone interested in rowing can contact me on mobile 0407 718336 or by email on bernie@bjdvaluers.com.au. COACHES CORNER NATHAN GREIG coach@maroochysurfclub.com.au 0426 211 021 The nippers are preparing for Bugsy s Boot Camp at the start of the school holidays. This camp is always highly anticipated. The nippers are put through 3 days of intensive training and are pushed to new limits. This is in preparation for the back half of the season. There will be a training camp for seniors over 4 days 20-23 December. This will be based at the Club. More details regarding this event will be advertised soon. Champion Lifesaver training has commenced. We are meeting every Thursday evening at 6 th Ave. This is an area of the Club we are trying to build, the more people that get involved the more successful it will become. Please call myself or Dale Murphy if you are interested. Narelle Souter will be hosting a Patrol Competition meeting Friday the 6 th of December at 5pm in the common room. We will be discussing what s involved in this field of competition as well as organising regular training times. Grab a friend, come down and see what it s all about. Board, ski and running squads will be taking a break from December 25 th returning on Thursday 2nd of January.

POOL RESCUE SUE BAXTER WINCH Our amazing Australian Representative Pool Rescue duo of Pamela Hendry and Sam Bell have been burning up the pools of Europe as members of the Australian Life Saving Team European Tour, 2013, lead by Australian Team Head Coach Danny Short. Their assault started at the BeNe Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands producing PB s and solid times across each element. Pamela was second overall in the Women s point score. Full results can be found at: http://live.lifesaving.nl/index_us.html Next was the prestigious German Cup - the blue ribbon meet on the European calendar. The highlights were Sam becoming the first Australian under 2.10.00 in the 200m super lifesaver producing a blistering 2.09.07. Not to be out done, Pamela raised the bar and shaved.88 from the 100m Manikin Carry World Record in an amazing of 55.72 secs. Although these were their stand out results, every time Pamela and Sam dived in, they showed their skill in individual and team events. They and their team mates were part of history as Australia won the German Cup for the first time. Reminiscing Jeff Leadbetter Joined Club 17/07/1967 How I Became Involved With Cattle Dogs A bloke called Boo Murray came down from Kilkivan and called into the Clubhouse one afternoon. We went down to the pub for a drink. Boo had his back to the street, sitting on a bar stool. A tall bloke walked up behind him, put his hands over Boos eyes and said Guess who?. Boo lunged back and Stretch knocked him off the bar stool. They went outside I grabbed a fresh pot and followed. They were in the gravel carpark at the corner of Duporth Avenue and Wharf Street. Boo was waving around (in these days of political correctness would be called a people deterrent - back then they were known as a.22 calibre rifle) like a conductor in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. I was a bit concerned. I thought if a few projectiles stated flying I was a chance to get my pot of beer smashed. Even though pots of beer thenwere only 20 cents, beach inspectors wages weren t very high. Anyway things settled down. The thing that impressed me most about the incident was that Boo had a cattle dog chained up in the back of his ute. I remember it was a very hygienic dog. I thought that s what I want a good clean dog. I drive out of Alcheringa Droughtmaster Stub at Eudlo, then owned by the postmaster General Sir Alec Hume and being run by Daryl Martin and bought a pub from Daryl. This began a long association with cattle dogs to this day. * When I say Hygienic during this incident it was trying to clean it s teeth on Stretch s backside!
