Concorso d Eleganza Hats on the Turf Inside a Classic Bubble Story by Panama D Avila Last Saturday marked the 25th anniversary of the Cavallino Classic Concorso d Eleganza hosted at the Breakers Hotel Resort in Palm Beach. The front lawn of the Breakers became the epic center for dozens of vintage and modern automobile models showcased by the Italian automaker Ferrari. With a flair of old world charm and elegant Palm Beach style, thousands of spectators paraded through the pristine lawn taking pictures of the prancing horse Cavallino while judges meticulously inspected each automobile for originality, style, and elegance to deliver the winners for Best in Show coveted awards. I was captivated by the elegant appeal of a slate grey 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB its sleek lines and classic style was among my favorites. This year s Best of Show Competition at the Cavallino Classic 2016 was awarded to the 1954 Ferrari 250 Monza PF Spider (0432M) owned by Dana Mecum, while the Best of Show Gran Turismo Ferrari award was given to the 1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Superfast II (2207 SA) of Lee Harrington. Among other classics showcased this year were Alpha Romeo, Bugatti, Sports car classics, and Pre and Post war models. The Cavallino Classic Grand Finale was held at Mar-a-Lago Classic Sports Sunday featured the Automotive Romance of Alfa Romeo. Other automobiles showcased on the grounds were American, Italian, French, British and German automakers. The Best of Show was awarded to the 1924 Isotta Frachini Tipo 8A F Cabriolet owned by Jim Patterson. The 25th Cavallino Classic may have come and gone but each one of us who continue the tradition and enthusiasm of this annual Car extravaganza will look forward to next year s Best of Show!!! See you on the turf. Above, 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California- s/n: 1055 GT.

A love Affair It happened 55 years ago, in 1960, Robert Phillips then a young Navy Officer, found this discarded race car in the back of a Rambler dealership. His decision to wipe some dust off of the valve covers would change his life forever. Ah, Ferrari I ve got to save it! and with that, Robert Phillips had spent 2/3 of his annual salary, on a broken Ferrari racing car. He then proceeded to fix it himself, and race, with the car accompanying the Navy family on its many moves over the years. Now a retired Admiral, Robert Phillips is a world-renown expert on the 500/750 Mondial models, after years of research and collecting factory Assembly Data Sheets. It was fortuitus that I should meet the car before I met my wife [of 53 years], he says with a smile. I would never have bought the car if I d already met her. Bought after its racing career had drawn to a close, Admiral Robert Phillips bought the unwanted 1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II by Scaglietti in 1960 for the princely sum of $2,225, or as he puts it, two thirds of my annual salary. Happiest on-track, these were Ferrari s early series of privateer cars. It was sent originally to Venezuela, then to the U.S. where it was competitive on its debut at Sebring. By 1959, it had been relocated to a Rambler Dealership, with a seized differential! In those days, cars were painted to the nation they were raced for. This car was originally painted with the French Royal Blue, but it d been painted five different colors by the time I reached it. The Germans raced in metallic Grey, the English had English Racing Green, the Italians raced in red, etc. and the French had Royal Blue. If you unscrew one of the knobs on the dash board you can see the tint of the original Royal Blue. Painting the car was always the last worry for racers, therefore finding the right paint job that was not too perfect was a job in itself. Sunday Polo Bubble Sunday polo was graced with abundant sunshine and crisp, cool weather that hovered in the mid-50s, while stylish spectators enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to wear their winter fashion best. Six teams competed on different fields in hopes of advancing to the semifinals of the 2016 Joe Barry Memorial Cup. The featured match of the day resulted in Enigma taking the victory over Villa Del Lago in the second half, with a final score of 11-7. Sarah Marince, a rising star in the country music industry, rocked the stadium with a pitchperfect delivery of the National Anthem, followed by Wellington Regional Medical Center s CEO, Robbin Lee, tossing the coin that signaled the start of the match. Enigma s Carlucho Arellano s impressive stickwork earned him the MVP award, which was presented by Equestrio magazine s editor, Heather Buchanan, while his excellent steed, Morisette, was named Best Playing Pony, and was bestowed the honor by Scott Velozo, communication and public relations manager at The Palm Beach Post.
