It looks at how tech time impacts on kids. Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time friction she knew all too well. SCREENAG- ERS reveals how tech time impacts kids development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
On Thursday 20h of April, the sun was shining for Galen to hold its annual Athletics carnival. The standard was once again high this year, with records being broken in both the track and field events. Record breakers were: Ellie Laffy Kelsie Wilson Talia McLaurin Will Sharp 16yr Shot Put, Discus 14yr High Jump, 100m, 200m 15yr High Jump 13yr Triple Jump As always, the final two events on the day were the Galen female and male Mac Hill memorial gifts. These gifts are an opportunity for the 8 fastest females and males over 100m to compete against each other, and they are hotly contested. The female field was strong with fastest qualifiers being Alice Hales, Madison O Keefe, Billie Stemmer, Emma Allan, Brylee Wilson, Kelsie Wilson, Meg Allen, and Jessica Gillies. In a close race, Kelsie Wilson managed to hold onto the title for another year. Well done Kelsie! The male field was equally strong with the eight fastest being Liam Cook, Ryan Holt, Pat Milner, Riley Petts, Joe Richards, Liam Carter, Josh Smart and Ryan Cole. Pat Milner was the male winner, a great effort and a terrific event to watch! Congratulations are also in order for our age group champions. These are the best performers from each age group, males and females, on the day. Each age group champion will be presented with a medallion at an upcoming assembly. Chisholm and Delany followed in second and third place, and in forth place was Champagnat. Galen welcomes new Italian Assistant Galen welcomes our new Italian Language Assistant Francesca Ridoli. Francesca is from Brescia in the north of Italy and will be assisting in LOTE classes for the rest of the term. She has recently obtained a Masters Degree with the highest possible score from the Catholic Unviersity of Brescia in Foreign Languages, Literature and Cultures (English and Spanish). Having lived in the US as an exchange student during her secondary studies, Francesca has now chosen Australia as her destination of choice to contribute to a school s language program. She is hoping to embark on a career in education in the future and gain meaningful work experiences during her travels in Australia. URGENT - Host Families Wanted For 2017 Again Galen is looking for generous families willing to host a student from overseas. In the past Galen families have hosted students from countries such as Italy, France, Germany, Holland and Indonesia. These exchanges will occur during term three and will last for 6, 8 or 10 weeks. The students will be around 16/17 years of age. Ideally we would like families that have children around the same age. However, in the past we have placed students with families with younger children and this has worked well. There are significant cultural and linguistic benefits for all parties involved in an exchange. Host families will be assisted financially by the organizing agency. This year as in previous years, Galen is receiving 10 students from Italy with the possibility of some students from Indonesia. We have 4 host families already and we desperately need another 6. Italian Exchange Experiences Rome Claire Knox Rome was amazing for all of us. In the last week of our trip we met up at the station along with our tour guide, Diego. The three days in Rome were certainly the highlight of my trip. Diego asked us what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go. We explored the city with him, seeing everything we asked to see The Colosseum, The Spanish Steps, Saint Peters Basilica and more! Travel Oliver Biddulph We were all lucky enough to be able to travel around different parts of Italy. You are able to ask your host family about different monuments and learn about the history of cities and towns in Italy as well as experience the unique cultures of some regions. Italian Social Life Bianca Russo The Italian social life was defiantly one of my favourite things about the whole experience. Not only because our brothers and sisters took us out every weekend and some weeknights and therefore having fun all the time, but because it allowed us to meet new people all the time. School Lucy Lee Italian school was certainly different in comparison to school in Australia. It made me extremely grateful for the amount and difficultly of homework here in Australia. I attended a scientific school in Padova. I participated in Latin, Italian, English, Mathematics, Physics, Philosophy, Physical Education and Art. I stayed with the same class full of people in the same room for each subject. Although the subjects were difficult, it was definitely a new cultural experience. Family India Dal Zotto One of the most influential and special parts of my Italian trip was the experience of staying with a host family. I was lucky to have a very caring relationship with my family and there is no way that I would return to Italy without visiting them. They are what I miss most about my trip and I am so lucky that they are a part of my life! Learning Support Centre Extra Support for Homework We will be providing extra supervised homework times this term, for all students. When: Every second Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. These are Days 2, 4, 6, 7 and 9 of the student timetable. Time: 3:30 4:30 Where: IT 1 (Room 10.1) and the Learning Support Centre. What: There will be no teachers available at this time but the staff from our centre will provide the same support as they do when working in the classroom. Science News Year 9 STEM Workshops CSU & GOTAFE Wangaratta are inviting yr9 students to be part of STEM activities, designed to highlight the breadth of STEM Careers & inspire students through hands on learning. The workshops will be held at the Wangaratta Campus which has state of the art laboratories. Students will participate in 4 workshops across major areas. DAY 1: June 22nd. 9.30 3.00 1. Agriculture & Horticulture: Wine Chemistry 2. Allied Health: What does a speech pathologist do? 3. Veterinary surgical asepsis (sterile techniques) 4. VEX robotics All activities will be hands on using the facilities of our local tertiary regional study centre, presented by CSU & GOTAFE staff & student leaders. Australian Science Competition The Australian Science Competition is a 1hour multiple choice test that is conducted in schools across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. The test does not require a lot of pre knowledge but tests students ability to analyse the information provided. The competition is available to students from yr 7 to 12 with different questions for each year level. The test will be held on Tuesday the 30th May at Galen. It is a great opportunity for students to practice doing multiple choice questions which are so important in VCE exams. All 22 acts were outstanding, leaving judges with incredibly hard decisions regarding winners of each category. Timor Leste Immersion East Timor was one of the best experiences that I think I ll ever have. It is hard to explain what I saw in Timor because there were so many little things, like wild dogs just roaming the streets and everyone in Baucau going to church at 5:30 am every morning. The immense resilience of the Timorese against what they have been through to win their independence in 2002 from their neighbours Indonesia and the horrific events that followed really has put my own life and problems into a wider perspective. Even our tour guide Sebas whom I have made friends with for hopefully the rest of my life has changed how I view and value my own family. My experience in East Timor was something that I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend anyone who is considering it to apply. Liam Cook One of the biggest things that impacted me was our first debrief as a group. During this debrief our guide Sebas, introduced the program and opened up about himself. Sebas is a normal Timorese man who is going through a great deal of mourning due to the passing of his child and wife. The traditional mourning process in Timor-Leste is heavy and lasts a long time. We were so grateful to have Sebas with us; we all made close friendships with him and he taught us so much about the culture and ourselves. We had such a great time with him and he made everything fun although he had this massive weight on his shoulders; we thank him for that. We wish Sebas all the best and we hope to see him visiting Galen sometime in the near future. Ruby Uebgergang During our immersion to East Timor, we visited a school called Ponta Leste. People aged from about 7-25 went to Ponta Leste after school to learn English, there were three stages A, B and C, with A being the most advanced class. Before we left we were told we would need a lesson plan and that it should be about simple things like colours, numbers, animals and Australian foods. In Ponta Leste we were welcomed by Jenny, who s English was very good. Upon arrival a traditional dance was performed by local kids. After they performed their dance we sang the song we had prepared, Castle on a hill. Following our song, we had a quick tour of Ponta Leste and then showed the photo books we had prepared to the students of Ponta Leste. I was surprised about how good they were at speaking English, so our simple lesson plans were no longer of use and we had to improvise. Teaching things like plurals, silent letters and past/present tense. On our last day at Ponta Leste we organised a party to celebrate and say farewell to the local kids. Overall our experience at Ponta Leste was amazing and I miss the looks on their faces when we taught them something new. Emma Christy Our visit to Timor-Leste was an extraordinary experience which I was very grateful to be able to go on. One of the days we were there we visited the Canossa Training and Development Centre for women which was connected to where we were staying. We walked around to each classroom where they were doing something different, with a range of age groups included. The first class we went into they were learning English, so we spoke some English and Tetun and they did their best to respond. The next class was Hospitality and then Textiles. It was very interesting to see all the students enjoying whatever they were participating in. They were having the best time, even though they were at school. They don t take anything for granted. On a couple of the days we went to Watebo beach, the local beach of Baucau, and enjoyed the scenery along the way. The beach was amazing, the water was a beautiful blue and it was so warm and very relaxing. We walked to the beach one of the days and along the way we saw what the locals around Baucau live like, it is so different to Australia. We saw houses made of mud and sticks but looked very sturdy, then there were other crops and plants that some of us had never seen before. At the beach Liam and Sebas, our guide, found some coconuts and they split them open and then we drank the juice and ate the inside. They were really fresh and delicious. The beaches there are so different and we were lucky to experience such an amazing place. The weather was perfect and not too hot and when it rained it was beautiful to see how everyone reacts to the rain. Some little boys were playing in the rain and one of the days we all went to play basketball in the pouring rain because we didn t want to waste an opportunity. Senior Girls Football First week back and straight into sport for the senior girls, and what a glorious day for footy it was. Plenty of excitement and banter on the trip over saw the girls in good spirits, though it was concerning that some girls were still asking what the rules were and what positions they might be good at playing. Game 1: Galen defeated Wangaratta High School. 2 : 2 : 14 2 : 4 : 16 Abby Walker revved the girls up with a quality speech before the match, but the game started with the girls laughing to get rid of their jitters. Ainslie Folino showed her skills in shepherding, always helping her teammates out and positioning herself well. Within 20 seconds of being on the field, Alice Hales helped Hannah Fitzgerald and Taylah Reidy with their tackling by stacking onto the girls already on the ground. Mads O Keefe was sprinting along the boundary and joining Abby and Billie Shanley in getting a bit puffed with helping out. The girls cheered prematurely a couple of times for nongoals, but also got around Gemma Gaul, Ally Peters and Bree Bortignon when they looked fear in the face going to ground to get the hardball and tackling their opposition. After halftime the bench looked up due to cheering thinking a goal had been scored, but instead it was just Izzy Judd marking the ball in a stylish fashion. Emma Gamble was excellent at guiding her teammates with her expert knowledge, then backing it up with fancy footwork in defense. Chloe Robinson and Shayla Leavett-Brown were excellent along the wing and forward line using each other well and talking to each other. The second half saw Chloe Elliott in the ruck where she got plenty of touches and moved the ball forward for Ellie Hourigan who scored the second goal of the game to put the girls just in front, right when it mattered. Megan Quick and Chloe Chamberlain worked well together in defense in the second half, finding space and moving the ball down the centre. For someone who informed me she didn t know anything about football, Chelsea Boyer worked the field and helped make space for her teammates; she was supported by 8 Reflections Newsletter Hannah Wright who ran rings around her opponents. Coming away with the win meant a lot to the girls, simply so they could gloat about being the best in Wangaratta. Game 2: Galen lost to Wodonga Catholic College. 5 : 7 : 37 1 : 0 6 The girls started this game a bit on edge after seeing their opponents warming up and thumping home a win in the previous game, but soon the fun kicked in and this helped them gain some confidence. Laura Ronnfeldt said she didn t mind where she played and this resulted in her playing everywhere throughout this final game. Meg Amery put on a show of laying a ripping tackle right in front of the bench. Gemma Tua fought hard to score the equalizing goal halfway through the first half this ultimately ended up being the only score on the board for the game. The CCW girls were strong and there was some rough pieces of play, but Kate Reiter and Meg held their own with tag teaming tackles. Maeve Coveney was running everywhere in her new position in the centre, and Amber Ferraro helped her out by being a weapon with her quick movements to get herself out of trouble. Kotone Kamiyama hid her fear, going for the loose ball and encouraging her teammates. The year 11 s in the team showed great sportsmanship in giving up their spots on the field in the second half so the year 12 s could have one last hurrah in school footy. Thanks to the girls who had a crack at boundary umpiring, goal umpiring and water girling. Thanks also to Amie Hourigan who was the runner for the day and took initiative in making changes and passing on messages. Final thanks to Will Nolan for ensuring we actually turned up to the right ground, then sharing his football expertise. Year 11 & 12 Upper Hume Senior Boys Football The Year 11 & 12 boy s football team played in the upper home senior football tournament on April the 19th with great success. They played 3 games against Wang High, Wodonga Secondary and Wodonga Middle Years College coming out victors in all 3 games. Game 1: Galen 5-4 34 Defeated Wang High School 1-3 9 This was a very hard and fast contest. Excellent defensive work by the Galen backline prevented Wang High from scoring. When Galen went forward strong overhead marking and good crumbing goals resulted in a solid win for the Galen team. Best Players: Fraser Judd, Paul Sanderson, Jack Gerrish, Jack Jenkin, Harrison Smart Game 2: Galen 4-4 28 Defeated Wodonga Secondary 2-8 20 A very fast Wodonga outfit put pressure on our resolute defense and after a lot of desperate and determined efforts Galen was able to peg back the opposition and be on even terms at half time. In the second half Galen s tall Timber brigade came to the party and started to mark strongly and convert their opportunities resulting in a satisfying win. Best Players: Jordan Storer, Ryan Holt, Darcy Ould, Brad Andison, Macca Murtagh Game 3: Galen 5-3 33 Defeated 2-3 15 A very good team effort by all the boys contributed to a rewarding victory. Players were prepared to go and get the hard ball and then to handball and deliver well to their forwards. There were some excellent pieces of play that resulted in another great win. Inclusion NetSetGO introduces people with disabilities, indigenous background or from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) community to the sport of netball. It is a modified version of netball adapted to let to suit the specific needs and abilities of diverse groups. Both girls and boys as well as adults are welcome to come along and have a go. The program will provide some physical exercise as well as social interaction for those who normally don t have access to or able to join in a lot of social activities due to their disability, cultural background or language barrier.
