The Broncos will open the competition on Friday morning at 9 a.m. (Mountain Time) against Belmont University (1-3), then follow that with a second match on Friday against Columbia University (-) at 4 p.m. (MT). The tournament will conclude on Sunday when Boise State takes on the tournament host Northwestern (1-2) at 1:3 a.m. (MT). These will be the final non-conference road matches for Boise State heading into the Broncos home tournament next weekend which will be followed by the 2-match Mountain West Conference schedule starting Sept. 18. This Week: The Broncos will look to get on track this weekend in Illinois where they will face two opponents for the first time ever in Belmont, out of the Ohio Valley Conference, and Columbia, of the Ivy League. The only team the blue and orange has played before will be the host squad in the Big Ten s Northwestern Wildcats, meeting for the second time. Credentials may be picked up at the door on the day of the match, one hour before the start time of the match. DIRECTIONS TO BRONCO GYM Bronco Gymnasium is located on the east side of campus next to Taco Bell Arena. The main entrance and media will call entrance is located at the Bronco Circle (south) entrance to the gym. PARKING With the high volume of events that take place on the Boise State campus parking options may vary on a match by match basis. It is highly suggested that you contact Doug Link in the Sports Information office 1-2 days in advance of the match you are attending to find out where media parking is allowed for that contest. On a typical match day parking is usually available in Bronco Stadium Parking Lot between the stadium and Taco Bell Arena/Bronco Gym on a first come, first served basis. PRESS SERVICES There are no hard wire phone lines or internet lines in Bronco Gym. It you need one contact Doug Link at least two weeks in advance to request one. Wireless internet is available at no charge in the gym. Radio lines will be installed only upon special request. Radio lines must be requested at least one week prior to the desired match. INTERVIEWS All student-athlete and coach interviews must be arranged through the Sports Information Office by calling or e-mailing Doug Link at least 24 hours in advance. The Sports Information Office will arrange an interview time that is mutually convenient for both the player and the media representative. Players home and cell phone numbers will not be given out. Generally, players are also available for interviews one-half hour before practice in Bronco Gym. Practice times may vary depending on class schedules, so contact Doug Link to check on player availability. Redshirt-sophomore Katelyn Kinghorn and senior Sarah Horton each recorded 23 kills, while Kinghorn hit 23.4 percent from the floor. Junior Brittany Reardon had 16 kills and eight blocks, four by solo. Junior Aly Duffin finished with 13 kills and a team-high 13 blocks. TEAM NOTES The Head Coach: Shawn Garus enters his fifth season in charge of the Broncos where he is 63-66 to go with a career record 178-186. League Affiliation: The Broncos are entering their third year as members of the newly expanded Mountain West Conference where they have tie for fifth-place in each of the two previous campaigns. Preseason Poll: Boise State was selected to finish seventh out of 11 teams in the 213 league race by the MW coaches in their preseason poll. Winning Seasons: The Broncos are looking to add to their streak of three-consecutive winning seasons in 213. They went 17-15 in 212, 16-15 in 211 and 21-12 in 21. At Home: Boise State was hard to beat at home in 212 going 1-3 in Bronco Gym, including an upset of MW co-champion San Diego State. On the Road: The Broncos went 7-12 on the road last season including going 5-9 on the opponents home court and 2-3 on neutral floors. The Broncos are 3- all-time against the current membership of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC): 1- vs. Eastern Kentucky, 1- vs. Morehead State and 1- vs. Murray State. The Bruins enter the contest at 1-3 overall with a win over Gardner-Webb (3-2) and losses to Memphis (3-2), Miami of Ohio (3-) and most recently on Tuesday night at No. 16 Western Kentucky (3-1). Belmont was picked to win the East Division of the OVC in 213 after going 18-17 overall and 11-5 in league during 212. MATCH 5 VERSUS COLUMBIA Boise State and Columbia have not met previously on the volleyball court. The Broncos are 2- over the current membership of the Ivy League going 1- against both Dartmouth and Yale. The Lions have not played yet with their season opener coming against Northwestern on Friday. Columbia tied for second in the Ivy League last year going 9-5 in conference and 16-9 overall. They return nine letterwinners from last year. MATCH 6 VERSUS NORTHWESTERN Boise State won the one previous meeting in the series in four sets over Northwestern on Sept. 11, 1999 in Boise. Boise State is 3-7 all-time against the current membership of the Big Ten Conference. The Wildcats are 1-2 heading into their first home matches of the season. Cal State San Bernardino, 1995 BOISE STATE TENURE (29-present) Shawn Garus is in his fifth season at the helm of the Boise State volleyball program holding a 62-64 (.492) record over his first four seasons with the Broncos. Garus inherited a program that was struggling and had only one winning season in the previous 1 years. Since arriving on campus Garus has won more matches than any of his five predecessors. After producing an 8-22 record in his first season, Garus has guided Boise State to three consecutive winning seasons, a first since the 1992 season. Over the last three seasons Garus has led the program through a series of challenges including a move from the Western Athletic Conference into the Mountain West Conference in 211. In 21, the last season in the WAC, Garus coached Boise State to one of the best seasons in the past two decades as the team went 21-12, the most wins in a season since 199 (21). His team also earned an 8-8 Western Athletic Conference record, the Broncos best-ever mark in 1 years of membership and best conference record since 1998. In addition, his team won 11 matches that ended in a 3- sweep, the most in a season since 1992. In 211 he lead the Broncos into their first campaign as members of the Mountain West Conference going 16-15 overall and 6-8 in league action to tie for fifth-place. Along the way the Broncos nearly upset No. 22 Oklahoma on the road and recorded three sweeps in conference action over Wyoming, Air Force and UNLV. The 212 campaign marked the second season in the MW and saw the Broncos battle hard throughout, including a four-set upset of eventual conference co-champion San Diego State in Boise. The blue and orange finished the year 17-15 to record the program s third straight winning season, while going 8-8 in league play to tie for fifth. The Broncos were dominating at home going 1-3 in Bronco Gym with two of the losses coming in five-sets. The team set a new school record for assists in a season with 1,565 and tallied the sixth-most kills (1,652) in program history. The campaign was capped off when senior outside hitter Liz Harden was named honorable-mention All-American. BOISE STATE HIGHLIGHTS Since Garus joined the Bronco family on June 3, 29, he has turned the program around. His Boise State coaching highlights are numerous and include: three-consecutive winning seasons (21-12), eight allconference honors (three first team, five second team), one AVCA All- West Region and honorable-mention All-American honoree, one ESPN/ CoSIDA Academic All-District Team award winner, one conference allfreshman team member and 24 academic all-conference honors. PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE Garus holds a strong coaching background. Prior to Boise State he was the head coach at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro for four seasons (25-8). There he recorded three-straight winning seasons with 2 or more victories while also leading his team to the Southern Conference (SoCon) finals twice. The 28 season was his most successful, turning in a 23-1 record while also producing a 2-15 record in 27 and a 23-13 record in 26. He turned UNCG from a team which was -16 in conference play in 24 to a team that was 14-4 in 28. He also produced five SoCon All-Conference players and 13 SoCon All- Academic honorees in his four-year tenure. Before UNCG, Garus served as the top assistant coach at the University of San Francisco during the 23 and 24 seasons helping the team to a 35-27 record. In 23 the Dons went 23-8 and Garus helped lead the team to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance and acquire their first ever national ranking (No. 24). Garus also spent time with the Texas Tech University coaching staff in 22 as an assistant helping the Red Raiders to a 14-14 record. His first collegiate head coaching experience came in 1998 when he was promoted from the assistant s position to the head job at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs where he remained from 1998 to 21. During his time in Colorado Springs he led his team to their best school record of 22-9 in 21 and first ever post-season appearance, as well as a regional ranking of No. 6. Not only did Garus serve as the head coach, but also as the university s compliance coordinator and transportation coordinator for 14 sports programs. During his time in Colorado Garus held a handful of club and volunteer assistant coaching positions including the head coach of Pikes Peak Volleyball Club (1999-2) and a two-time volunteer assistant at the Olympic Training Center (1998-1999). COACHING HIGHLIGHTS In 12 seasons as a collegiate coach (head and assistant) Garus coaching honors include: 22 all-conference (1 first team and 12 second team) honorees, six honorable mention all-conference, two AVCA All- Region, one AVCA honorable-mention All-American, six conference all-tournament team members and one conference all-freshman team honoree. Academically his student-athletes have earned one ESPN/ CoSIDA Academic All-American, four ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and 38 academic all-conference awards. PERSONAL The Norco, Calif. native, is a 1995 graduate of California State University San Bernardino where he played four years on the Coyotes men s club volleyball team (1991-94). He earned his bachelor s degree in business administration with a marketing specialization.
