Jason Hooten has been a part of eight of those either as head coach or as an assistant. Since he joined the staff in July 2004, the Bearkats have compiled a record of 300 wins and 187 losses. The Sam Houston men have earned Southland tournament berths each of his 15 years in Huntsville (winning the event in 2010, also reaching the finals in 2006, 2014 and 2015 and the semifinals nine times). The Bearkats, who picked up their fourth 20-win season in the last five years, advanced to the semifinals of the CIT and finished the season with an impressive 21-15 overall record for the 2017-18 season. Harris Earns SLC Preseason Second-Team Laurels Representing the Sam Houston State men s basketball team, senior guard Marcus Harris was named to the Southland s 2018-19 Preseason All-Conference second team. Harris, who took a redshirt during the 2016-17 season due to NCAA transfer rules, had a fantastic opening season with the Bearkat squad after making the switch from San Diego. The lone returning starter, Harris made 30 starts in 34 appearances as a junior and averaged 9.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. He shot 30.4 percent from beyond the arc and averaged 77.9 percent from the foul line. Harris had 12 double-digit scoring games, 10 of which coming in SLC action. Harris went off for a season-high 28 points against Abilene Christian, hitting 14-for-15 from the foul line in the game. He had a 27-point game against Houston Baptist and an impressive 23-point effort at Nicholls. He recorded the first double-double of his career against Hardin-Simmons, racking up 12 points and a season-high 10 rebounds in the victory. Home-Court Advantage Kicking off the first week of the season at Johnson Coliseum, the Bearkats will play two of their 14 home games in the opening week of the 2018-19 season. Thursday s game against Southwestern will be the last home game until the squad returns for a Nov. 28 matchup against Central Michigan. Following the contest with the Chippewas, Sam Houston will play two more non-conference home games against Alabama State (Dec. 18) and Texas Lutheran (Dec. 31) before opening up SLC play. Going 14-1 at home just one season ago, the Bearkats posted a.933 winning percentage at Johnson Coliseum - the highest mark since their perfect, 15-0 home record in 2002-03. Seven Solid Veterans After losing nine student-athletes from last season s roster, head coach Jason Hooten looks to seven veteran Bearkats to lead his squad in his ninth season as head coach. The Kats returning class is made up of four seniors - Albert Almanza, Cameron Delaney, Josh Delaney and Marcus Harris - and three sophomores - Bubba Furlong, Dajuan Jones and Chidozie Ndu.
