The landscape of South African football has significantly changed over the past 12 months with the birth of a new side in Cape Town City and the slow death, it would seem, of one of the grand old names in the domestic game, Moroka Swallows. It shows how quickly fortunes can fluctuate, both for clubs and players and coaches. When Swallows lifted the 2012 MTN8 title on the back of a second-placed finish in the league the season before, who would have predicted that within four years they would be struggling to cobble together a team in the ABC Motsepe League two divisions below? This famous South African footballing institution will always have a special place in the history of the local game, for the players it has produced, the great cup finals it has been involved in and the classic clashes that make up its past. I am sure that every fan of a certain age who watched football in the 1980s and 90s especially will have a Swallows memory that springs to mind. That this club may no longer compete in its original form is a real shame and it is for that very reason why the KICK OFF Yearbook is such a vital resource for South African football. It is to reveal to future generations to the growth and development of our game, but also the pitfalls that befell once great clubs. South African football has never been good at recording its history and were it not for the KICK OFF Yearbook and a handful of avid journalists passionate enough to devote their time to the cause, it would be lost in the mists of time. The new, exciting digital age that we live in makes producing print publications like the KICK OFF Yearbook more of a challenge, but at the same time increases its importance because as quickly as online content is rolled out, it is forgotten and we consume the next piece of news, statistic or trivia. I know everybody at KICK OFF understands the responsibility we have to bring you, the reader, accurate and insightful information that you can trust to grow your own passion for the game. This season is shaping up to be fascinating one as Mamelodi Sundowns look to defend the league title they won so handsomely in the last campaign. But BidVest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates consider themselves serious contenders, while SuperSport United have, on paper at least, a championship-winning squad if they can fire under coach Stuart Baxter. At the bottom of the table there are no outstanding contenders for relegation, though Baroka FC have very little topflight experience in their squad and will have to learn quickly in what is a tough school. Bafana Bafana also embark on their quest to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and we wish them the best of luck as they seek to return the country to the game s greatest stage.
