FLAG CITY WINGS FRIENDS FOR FUN SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE January 2019 Page 2 Larry (GABBY) & Wanda (SHORTY) F-2 Senior Chapter Directors Well here we are looking toward the start of another year. Whether the last one was a good one for you or a bad one we can all agree that we are very lucky to be here getting ready to welcome in 2019. We will all be looking forward to a new and exciting riding season with new places to ride and old places to revisit and renew old friendships. Wanda and I are looking forward to taking our (new to us) toy hauler to the District rally and to a few more campouts with our chapter members as well as visit with other chapters. It looks like a lot of fun with a lot of people who enjoy camping as well as riding our beautiful motorcycles. On that note I am once again asking all of you to put on your thinking caps and help Don Smith, Dave King, Matt Shepherd, and myself put together a ride schedule that the entire chapter can enjoy this coming riding season. Please let us know of any places that you think we would all have fun riding to as well as some of the old rides that maybe we have missed for a few years. Come on folks this is your chapter as well as ours and we will really try to listen to any suggestions and find a way to make them happen. On another note we have received our raffle tickets from the District. I am hoping with all of you helping me we can sell these in a short time and get in some quality riding time in. We have always had good luck selling in 3 key areas and hope to wrap up as many sales as possible. We will have tickets for anyone who will step up and take 20 or 30 to sell themselves. Purchase a ticket for each child you have or your favorite mother-in-law. Remember the person who sells the winning ticket also receives $100.00 and I can tell you from personal experience that that cash can come in handy. We will also have our monthly ticket raffle at each monthly gathering with your chance to win the amount of tickets we sell that night. We have sold the 1st - 2nd - and 3rd place tickets over the years but still have not had a member win so come on and help me and Judy sell our allotted tickets. In starting this month, I really want all of you to know that your thoughts and prayers went a long way in helping a grateful old biker get through a very rough stretch this last month. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Larry (GABBY) & Wanda (SHORTY) F-2 Senior Chapter Directors

FLAG CITY WINGS FRIENDS FOR FUN SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE January 2019 Page 3 DANDY DON S JANUARY JOKES Wow, another month has gone by- and a new year is upon us. Welcome to 2019. Last month we did two different charities, one was for the Wreaths Across America where we help support the Great Lakes National Cemetery of bringing in over 10,000 wreaths to put on the hero's grave sites. Several people attended to help place them. Thank you to all who helped. The other charity was to St. John's Church where our Chapter helped a needy family for the Christmas Holiday. Father Andy accepted the donation on behalf of the family. Pictures were taken of the presentation by my-self and Mr. Bob Dennis. See the picture below. Thank You Bob for your help. Looking forward to Wingless Weekend in Houghton Lake in February. This is a very fun time away for the weekend and you can learn from the seminar's that will be presented. The new Michigan Couple of the Year will be appointed along with the new Individual of the Year for our great state of Michigan. Because we don't know what tomorrow will bring, be sure to tell your love ones that you love them. Never leave home without a kiss or a hug and I Love You! Till Next Time! FLAG CITY WINGS FRIENDS FOR FUN SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE January 2019 Page 4 RIDER EDUCATION The Buddy System When your stator fails you can still ride it home By: James R. Davis Scuba divers know it as a life-saving practice - the buddy system. Maybe not so dramatic, but those of us that ride Wings have all known a friend whose stator went out when away from home. In this case, a buddy system works just fine to get that bike into town. When your stator dies, and your engine is running, it will continue to run until the battery dies, and it will not, of course, recharge that battery. Then your bike dies, and you pull to the side of the road. What to do? You swap batteries with your buddy! Pull all unnecessary fuses (particularly the headlight fuse if there is daylight) then start your dying Wing. Jump start the bike with the 'dead' battery, then drive away until the new battery dies. The good stator in your friend's bike will charge, at least partially, that 'dead' battery sufficiently so that when it is time to do the swap again you can do it and get the bikes started again. You might have to do this a few times, of course. Naturally, if you are riding in a group of more than two, you use any of the full function bikes to originate the jump start from. This will severely tax those batteries, possibly doing damage as a result. But at least in some cases you can get to town this way. (Good biker etiquette then suggests that if those batteries develop trouble soon after you do this you might have to put a couple of them on your credit card.)
