The Rams are 16-12 (4-5 MW) overall, dropping 2-of-3 on the road last weekend at New Mexico. CSU dominated the first game of the series, 12-2, scoring in every inning after the first on its way to the rout. The Lobos impressed during the doubleheader on Sunday, however, winning both games to clinch the series. CSU won 9-of-10 contests between Feb. 17-March 7 to start the year with an 11-4 record, which tied for the second-best mark through an opening 15 games since 1997. Amber Nelson continues to lead the MW in numerous offensive categories, including on base percentage, slugging percentage and home runs. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT SAN JOSE STATE (23-12, 3-3 MW) - San Jose State is 3-3 over its first six league games, taking 2-of-3 against Nevada (in Stockton, Calif.) and then dropping 2-of-3 versus San Diego State on the road. The Spartans won 13 out of 14 games in a stretch that lasted from March 5-31. Katelyn Linford has been great in the circle for SJSU, posting a 15-4 record in 27 appearances with a 2.32 ERA and a MW-leading 138 strikeouts. COLORADO STATE NOTES CSU and SJSU faced off in a three-game series in Fort Collins last year, with the Rams winning the first contest but the Spartans taking the next two. CSU dominated the first game, winning 9-3 after leading 6-0 through four innings. Haley Hutton went 2-for-3, including an RBI double, in the win. SJSU rolled in the next two games, winning 13-5 and 12-4, both in shortened six-inning affairs. LAST TIME OUT - RAMS DROP 2-OF-3 AT NEW MEXICO The Rams won their first game in Albuquerque last week, but it was New Mexico that took the series with two wins on Sunday. CSU won 12-2 on Friday, scoring in every inning except the first on its way to the blowout victory. New Mexico bounced back to win the first game of Sunday s doubleheader, 7-3. Amber Nelson and Haley Hutton collected all four of CSU s hits, while the Lobos used two big innings to cruise to the win. New Mexico jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Game 3, but the Rams tied it at 5-5 midway through. CSU wound up rallying to tie the game twice, but the Lobos scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to seal an 8-6 win. HUTTON SETS RUNS RECORD, CONTRIBUTES TO WINS Senior shortstop Haley Hutton set the all-time runs scored record at CSU over the Rams series against San Diego State in late March, and now has 172 for her career. What s more, when Hutton scores, CSU is typically successful. The Rams hold an 81-40 record over her career when she s scored at least once, and a 34-9 mark when Hutton has crossed home plate at least twice. EARLY SCORE GETS THE WIN The Rams have outscored their opponents 37-16 in first innings this season, and the production has led to wins. CSU holds a 13-4 record when they score any amount of runs in the first inning this season. HUTTON, NELSON PRODUCING AT A NATIONAL LEVEL Senior Haley Hutton and sophomore Amber Nelson have each impressed during their careers as Rams thus far, and they have the stats to prove it. Both players have career marks that rank highly in multiple categories among all active players in the NCAA. Hutton is 10th in triples (14), 13th in bases on balls (111) and 10th in runs scored (172). Hutton is also 45th in batting average (.393) and Nelson is 14th among all active players in career slugging percentage (.754). GAMBOA HEATING UP AT THE HOT CORNER Freshman Corina Gamboa has established herself as a threat at third base. Gamboa has posted 8 RBI in nine MW games, with three doubles. The Chino, Calif., native had 4 RBI during a 3-for-4 outing against San Diego State on March 26, leading the Rams to the series-clinching victory. NELSON, THE SOPHOMORE SLUGGER Sophomore catcher Amber Nelson has been a force at the plate in her sophomore season, and ranks highly in the MW in numerous offensive categories. She leads in home runs (10), on base percenatage (.578) and slugging percentage (.882). She ranks second in batting average (.447), fourth in total bases (67) and third in walks (21). Nelson s slugging percentage would currently break the CSU single-season record by nearly 20 points (Lauren Cusack,.863, 2008). INCREDIBLE CONSISTENCY FROM HUTTON Senior shortstop Haley Hutton has made getting on base a habit during her career, holding an on base percentage of.506 in 179 games in a CSU uniform. She has a.504 mark in the category in 2017. The Colorado-born product has safely reached base at least once in 166 of her 179 career games, equaling 93 percent of her appearances. She has reached base in 27-of-28 games (96 percent) this season. PUTTING ZEROES ON THE BOARD The Rams won nine of 10 games between Feb. 17-March 8. They also had a stretch of five shutout victories in a six-win period for the first time since 2006. Four of CSU s five wins at its Colorado State Classic I were in shutout fashion, leading to a minimal 1.09 team ERA. Pierce, Petakoff and Bridgette Hutton each had at least one shutout at the Colorado State Classic I. PIERCE PRODUCING IN THE CIRCLE - AND AT THE PLATE Junior pitcher Kaylynn Pierce isn t just 7-1 on the year with three complete game shutouts. The UC Riverside transfer stepped to the plate against Idaho State on March 5 for her first plate appearances as a Ram and provided her own run support. The homer wasn t just the first of Pierce s career - it was her first collegiate hit of any kind. Pierce is hitting.300 with 4 RBI in 20 at bats. MCCORKHILL SHOWCASING POWER Junior Hannah McCorkhill has started every game at first base for the Rams in 2017, and has shown significant pop at the plate. McCorkhill entered her third season with three career homers, and she has already more than doubled her career total with six this season. The 5-10 righty also ranks second on the team in RBI (23) and slugging (.607). GREEN AND GOLD GOING YARD CSU has hit 22 home runs in 28 games this season. Amber Nelson leads the team with 10 long balls, and Hannah McCorkhill is second with six. Lauren Buchanan has added three of her own including a grand slam in her first plate appearance of the season against Maryland on Feb. 10. Nelson s 10 dingers already exceeds the top total by any CSU player from a year ago (8). It took CSU six games to get its first round-tripper last year, whereas the Rams had three in their first game of 2017. PITCHERS DOMINATE IN LAS VEGAS CSU s pitching staff was stellar at the DeMarini Desert Classic (Feb. 17-19), combining for a lowly 1.30 team ERA. The trio of Kaylynn Pierce, Larisa Petakoff and Bridgette Hutton allowed only five earned runs over 27 innings pitched. Opposing batters only hit.160 against the group and drew only five walks. Pierce was particularly effective in her start against Weber State, throwing a complete game, two-hit shutout. HUTTON LEAVING A LEGACY Senior Haley Hutton, a three-time All-MW honoree and shortstop extraordinaire, has already left her mark on the CSU record books. She is currently the all-time career batting average leader (.393), and holds two of the top five single-season marks in school history, including her.411 average in 2016, which ranks fourth. She also set the career bases on balls record last season, and now has 112 in her career, making her the first player in program history with 100-plus walks. Hutton broke the career runs scored record on March 26 vs. SDSU, and now has 172 for her career. Hutton is now fourth in steals (39). She is also now tied for fifth all-time in hits (227), and needs 25 to tie the all-time record (252). SENIORS LEADERS IN THE MIDDLE CSU s two seniors will hope to lead the team from their middle infield positions. Haley Hutton (shortstop) and Taryn Arcarese (second base), both Colorado natives, will give the Rams one of the best middle infield duos in the conference. The pair combined for 48 RBI and 100 hits last season, and both ranked in the top 10 in the MW in defensive assists. They have been crucial to us for three years, head coach Jen Fisher said about the duo. They are crucial to us in the way they play, but they are so much more to us than their arm or their range. They are competitors and they want to win. It is so neat to see them work together and be great friends like they are. They have incredible instincts and competitiveness, and they are coachable. Their attitudes are great. As good of players as they are they are even better people. It is exciting to be going into this season with those two. CLOER ADDED TO COACHING STAFF The Rams added former Arkansas standout catcher Whitney Cloer as an Assistant Coach this summer. Cloer comes to CSU after serving as the assistant coach and assistant general manager for the Scrap Yard Dawgs of National Pro Fastpitch, where she had been since last August. The former standout catcher at Arkansas (2005-09) has quickly made an impact on the team. I like everything about the system that she has put in. It is very simple and our players are really adjusting well to that system of hitting so I think it is going to be positive on that end, Fisher said about her new assistant. She has a great background and spent some time in the SEC. She s been a great addition to our program. UP NEXT CSU will return home to host Northern Colorado on Tuesday, April 11 at 4 p.m. at Ram Field.
