SYLVAN PARK PAIDEIA DESIGN CENTER THE PANTHER EXPRESS ISSUE 1 SEPTEMBER 2007 SYLVAN PARK S 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION A PERFECT DAY! Sylvan Park Elementary School celebrated its 100-year anniversary Friday, August 31, 2007. The celebration began with a parade consisting of the Hillsboro High School Marching Band, each current class at Sylvan Park, several antique cars, an antique pharmacy truck, an antique fire truck, Mrs. Cheadle s convertible, and the Metro Mounted Police. Mrs. Cheadle rode with West End Middle School principal Fred Hutchings and Mr. Peter Condiles (MC of the program) in her modern convertible, while longtime volunteer Ms. Sara Graves rode in a 1939 Packard convertible

The procession marched past a large cheering crowd at the front of Sylvan Park School as the Hillsboro High School band played and the Sylvan Park 4th graders, led by Mrs. Hotchkiss, played the new school song, the Sylvan Park March, on their recorders, followed by the Mounted Police. As neighbors came out to wave and watch, the parade marched to 47th, down Wyoming, and then returned down Utah to culminate on the front school lawn, where the flag was raised by the National Guard and the West End Middle School Band played our National Anthem. Mrs. Cheadle introduced our school board representatives and the cluster principals, Hillsboro High School principal Rod Manuel and West End Middle School principal Fred Hutchings, after which Mayor Purcell spoke, proclaiming this day a perfect day at Sylvan Park Elementary School. The program continued inside the auditorium, hosted by Peter Condiles (the husband of a former principal of the school), as a slideshow, assembled by Peggy Northcutt, contrasted the past and present Sylvan Park School. Highlights of the program included interviews with several Sylvan Park alumni, including Buck Dozier, Pat and Patty Waggoner, Kevin Jones, and our long-time next-door neighbor, Mrs. Ellen Tant, who attended Sylvan Park from 1925 1931. Renowned author and historian Bill Carey spoke of the history of the West Nashville area, beginning in the 1880s and leading to the building of the original Sylvan Park School, a two-room wooden building, in 1907. The celebration concluded with a reception in the library of the school. The PTO will be assembling a commemorative DVD from pictures and videos of the parade and the slideshow, which can be obtained with a $10.00 donation to the PTO. If anyone has footage of the parade or any part of the celebration they wish to contribute, please contact Judy Beasley at 383-9612 or Vicky Amann at 463-0067. A big thanks to everyone who helped mark this historic event. Happy 100th, Sylvan Park! 000000000 2007 Spaghetti Fest T-Shirt Winner Announced!
