MISSION STATEMENT: While, anyone can learn to swim, the ability to learn to swim well starts to close earlier than most people think. Though not impossible, it becomes more difficult to overcome fears associated with swimming as age increases. This is why it is so important to gain swimming experience and overcome these fears at a young age. We get people swimming as early as possible. This is the only sport that will save your life! Learning to swim is a cooperative effort between teacher, student, and family. It requires time, effort, and a lot of patience. A student will only be able to learn to swim if they want to learn to swim. The key is convincing them that swimming is not only an essential life skill, but it is also a fun and rewarding experience. This is our goal at Kicks N Flips. We are here to save lives, promote a healthy, active lifestyle, and have fun doing it! SWIMMING TIPS: *Don t teach your swimmer to hold their breath. Always blow slow and steady bubbles when submerging. This will prevent water from being inhaled and/or swallowed. It will also help relax the lungs and chest muscles and will decrease anxiety and discomfort. Start out by blowing bubbles into a small surface area of water, like a cup. Next, progress to a larger surface area, like a ring. Finally, move on to a larger body of water, like a bath tub or a pool. *Having trouble with front floats? The face needs to be completely submerged under water. Tuck your chin down until it touches your chest. (remember to blow bubbles). Feet will begin to float off the bottom when this is done correctly. Imagine a teeter-totter. When you are at the top, where is your friend? (at the bottom) When your face/head is up and out of the water, your feet will always drop to the bottom. Submerging your face will bring your feet up to the top. *Having trouble with back floats: head needs to be back on top of the water, like on a pillow. (don t tip too far back, or you will dunk your head). Stomach and feet need to be up on top of the water. Muscles need to be relaxed, like when taking a nap. Still not floating? Move arms up above your head so your biceps are touching your ears. *Kicking, but not moving? Make sure your legs are mostly straight and that your toes are pointed away from you. (pencil legs w/ballerina feet). Keep legs at surface and only kick about 6 inches of water. Kick fast! (think of splashing water with the top of your feet, not your knees) The bigger the kicks and the more bent the legs, the more water you re kicking and the harder it becomes.

Kicks N Flips 2014 Class Descriptions Level Requirements Completed Skills (to pass this level) Parent-tot None, 6+ mo This is a water introduction class that is fun for both parent and child. Through playing games, children learn to blow bubbles, kick, float, glide, and become familiar with floatation devices. Jumping from the wall and going down the small slide are class favorites. 1 None, 3+ yrs This is an introductory class where children work on basic water skills without a parent. The following skills are introduced at a slow and steady pace: submerging head, blowing bubbles, supported front and black floats/glides, flutter kicking, arm movements, and lifejacket use. Basic listening skills and safety rules are an 1.5 Level 1 skills, 3-4 yrs 2 Level 1 skills, 5+ yrs 3 Level 2 skills, 5+ yrs 4 Level 3 skills 6+ yrs 5 Level 4 skills 7+ yrs 6 Level 5 skills 7+ yrs Advanced Swimmers Swim Team Prep Level 6 skills 7+ yrs Level 6 skills 7+ yrs important part of this class. This class is designed for your 3-4 yr old fish who has passed level 1, is comfortable submerging, and can float by them self. These kids are too little and/or not mature enough to work independently in level 2. They work on level 2 skills, but at a slower pace. We see more of their feet than their heads because they are upside down most of the time. This class is a blast! This is a fast pace class where children are expected to work independently when an instructor is not working directly with them. Submerging while blowing bubbles, floating, and gliding are reinforced. The front and back crawl stroke are emphasized. Children need to swim both strokes, with good form, for 20 feet without stopping to pass this class. Lifejackets and safety issues are also addressed. Children continue to work on perfecting the front and back crawl stroke. Side breathing is incorporated and the elementary backstroke is introduced. Students begin swimming in the deep end and are introduced to treading water and diving from the side. To pass, children need to swim all three strokes, with good form, for 50 feet without stopping. Reaching assists, and smart swimming are introduced while safety issues continue to be reinforced. Children continue to perfect level 3 skills. The breaststroke, standing dives, and throwing assists are introduced. Children need to swim all four strokes, with good form, for 25 yards (75 feet) in order to pass this class. Treading water, safety skills, and smart swimming are reinforced. Children continue to perfect level 4 skills. The sidestroke, board diving, and flip turns are introduced. Children need to tread water for two minutes and swim all five strokes, with good form, for 50 yards (150 feet) in order to pass this class. Safety skills, and smart swimming continue to be reinforced. Emphasis is placed on endurance and technique during this level. Using all five strokes, children must swim 500 yards continuously and tread water for 5 minutes to pass this class. Swimming 100 yards of each stroke with excellent technique is also required. The butterfly, lifeguard skills, and diving approaches are introduced. Safety skills, and smart swimming continue to be reinforced. Endurance and technique are emphasized in this class. It is for those who have passed level 6 and would like to continue to be in the water and work on improving their skills. All the strokes are included in this class. Children will also get to choose other subjects to concentrate on. (i.e.: diving, lifeguarding skills, swim races and starts, flips turns, and water safety) Endurance and technique are emphasized in this class. It is for those who have passed level 6 and would like to work skills aimed for swim team competition. If your child is unsure if they would like to go out for the swim team, this is a perfect class. We work on starts, flip turns, and strength and gear towards races. We swim lots of laps!

I will add parent-tot classes to the schedule upon request. We will do the best we can to get them added to the schedule! HELP: Since 1996, Kicks N Flips has been teaching thousands of people how to swim in Wyoming MN. This joint venture with The Plymouth Creek Athletic Club is new to the program this year and we need help getting the word out. Please, help recruit and refer friends and families who are serious about learning to swim. This will help prevent class cancellations due to low enrollment. Thank you for participating in the Kicks N Flips learn to swim program! Why Not Once per Week Classes? Simply because they don t work! Learning to swim requires coordinating thought and muscles as well as increasing strength and endurance. To become proficient quickly, a person needs to practice correctly and often. This is a progressive program, where the goal is to get people swimming, not have them repeat the same level numerous times. This becomes frustrating and expensive! PRIVATE LESSONS: Private/Semi private lessons and evaluations are available and will occur primarily between 6 pm and 6:30pm. Other times and days may be available depending on the session, so please ask if this is something you are interested in. HOW TO REGISTER: Just snail mail the registration form and payment to Kicks N Flips at 26225 Glen Oak Dr. Wyoming MN 55092. Registration forms are included on the last page of this packet. Payment needs to accompany registration forms in order to reserve a space in class. If you are registering for a class with a start date of less than 1 week away, you may drop off your registrations at The Plymouth Creek Athletic Club. No news is good news!
