The Tigers hold a 23-10 lead in the series. Earlier this season, Memphis posted a 79-54 win over UAB at FedExForum (see game recap and boxscore on page 9). Last year, the two rivals played three times, with Memphis taking two of the encounters. The Tigers won both meetings in the Bluff City with a 73-66 victory in the regular season and a 57-46 win in the Conference USA Tournament championship game. The Blazers defeated Memphis 80-74 in Birmingham. The Blazers hold an 8-5 series advantage in games played in Birmingham, and won last year s game 80-74 at Bartow Arena. Memphis last won in Birmingham in the 2002-03 campaign (90-79). Under head coach John Calipari, the Tigers are 2-3 versus UAB in Birmingham. Since Conference USA formed in 1995-96, Memphis holds a 13-7 advantage in those matchups. The Tigers have won nine of the last 12 encounters, all in the Calipari era. Before becoming conference rivals (Great Midwest/Conference USA), Memphis and UAB played twice in the mid-1980s. In 1983-84, Memphis defeated UAB in a 53-51 overtime contest on Feb. 4, 1984, in Memphis. The next season (1984-85), the two schools met in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Houston, Texas. The Tigers again pulled out an overtime thriller over the Blazers, winning 67-66. The victory came on Memphis run to the 1985 NCAA Final Four. That contest also pitted Memphis against its former coach Gene Bartow, who guided the Tiger program from 1970-71 through 1973-74. If that is the case, then Memphis head coach John Calipari s teams are more than holding their own. Since Calipari took over in 2000-01, the Tigers have a 108-17 record at home (The Pyramid/FedExForum) for an incredible 86.4 winning percentage. And, the Tigers have proven to be just as tough on the road in the Calipari era. Memphis has a 44-27 record in road games (not including neutral sites) for a 62.0 winning percentage. In 2005-06, Memphis was the last NCAA Division I team in the nation to lose a road game. The Tigers dropped their lone road game Mar. 2 at UAB 80-74. FRIENDLY FEBRUARY While the Tigers have enjoyed success in the John Calipari era in the month of January (45-10;.818 winning percentage), February hasn t been too bad either. Under Calipari, Memphis has a 34-11 record (.756 winning percentage) in February. Last year, the Tigers posted a perfect 7-0 record in February. Also included in that 34-11 overall mark was a 16-game winning streak in the month of February from 2001-02 through 2003-04. AMONG ELITE COMPANY Head coach John Calipari has the Memphis program going in the right direction, and that can clearly be seen in the number of victories the Tigers have over the last five seasons (2002-03 through 2006-07 to date). However, all three streaks came to an end with an 80-74 loss to the Blazers. The previous season (2004-05), Memphis dropped a narrow 73-70 decision when Duane Erwin s three-point attempt rimmed out at the buzzer. Both games were broadcast on ESPN2. TIGERS GOING FOR SEVENTH-STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASON With its next win, Memphis will reach the 20- win plateau for a seventh-consecutive season. The Tigers are currently 19-3. Florida has the nation s longest winning streak at 14 straight. DORSEY LOVES PLAYING THE BLAZERS You see it in college basketball across the country. A player always seems to have his best games against a certain opponent. For Memphis Joey Dorsey, that foe is UAB. In five career games versus the Blazers, the Baltimore, Md., native is averaging 8.6 points and 12.8 boards per contest. In this year s earlier meeting in Memphis, the 6-foot-9 forward had six points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the 79-54 win over the Blazers. Last year, Dorsey posted double-doubles against UAB in all three meetings in 2005-06. He had 12 points and 16 boards (Memphis) and 11 points and 16 rebounds (Birmingham) in the two regular season encounters last year. Dorsey had 10 points and 12 boards in the Conference USA Tournament championship game win over UAB last March. As a freshman in 2004-05, Dorsey had four points, eight boards, two blocks and four steals in a 73-70 setback to the Blazers in Birmingham. TIGER THIEVES ON THE COURT Memo to Memphis opponents take care of the basketball or the Tigers will take it away. The Tigers have increased their intensity on the defensive end in recent games, as the Memphis defense has forced its opponents to turn the ball over 19 times (95 total turnovers) in the last five contests (Jan. 20- Feb. 3).

MORE ON STREAKS FOR TIGERS For the fifth time in the John Calipari era, the Tigers have hit double digits in a winning streak. The 2006-07 streak is at 11 straight, which is tied for the seventh-longest in Memphis basketball history. The longest win streak is 20 games by the 1985-86 team. In the last 35 years (since 1970-71), the 2006-07 team s record of 17-3 ties the 1976-77, 1981-82 and 1983-84 squads for the fifth-best 20-game start. The 1972-73 NCAA title game squad was 16-4 in its first 20 games. Prior to the last two years, the best 20-game start under Calipari was 16-4 by the 2001-02 and 2003-04 teams. He entered the 2006-07 season with 109 swats, and after recording 53 blocks in the Tigers 22 contests this year, the 6-foot-9 forward cracked the Tiger career blocked shots leader list. The Baltimore, Md., native has 162 career blocks and is in the No. 6 spot on that chart. Dorsey needs 16 blocks to move into a tie for the No. 5 spot with Dennis Isbell. Jeremy Hunt (14 points) and Willie Kemp (12) also scored in double figures for the Tigers. Antonio Anderson dished out a career-high nine assists, while Dozier added eight rebounds. Wen Mukubu led all scorers with a gamebest 18 points for the Blazers. Lawrence Kinnard scored 13 points, and Paul Delaney III added 12 points. Kinnard and Mukubu each grabbed five boards for UAB. The game began as many Memphis-UAB contests have fast and furious and close in the opening minutes. The Blazers took the early advantage and held the upper hand the first eight minutes. Mukubu (six points) and Maurice Gibbs (five) led the UAB charge to a 17-14 lead. The Tigers stayed close in the early going and then tied the contest at 17-all on a Doneal Mack trey at the 11:44 mark. From that point, Memphis went on a 12-0 run to take the lead for good at 29-17 with 6:08 remaining. A Delaney trey halted that run, but the Tigers responded with an 11-2 spurt to increase the lead to 18 points at 40-22 at the 1:18 mark. Memphis led 42-26 at the break. After halftime, it was more of the same, as the closest UAB got was 13 points. The Tigers held a narrow 18-14 rebound advantage at halftime, but dominated the glass in the second half 24-8 en route to building their biggest lead of the game at 27 points (64-37 at the 11:27 mark). Memphis shot 49.2 percent from the field, while UAB hit 43.8 percent from the floor. #17/18 Memphis 79, UAB 54 Jan. 16, 2007 FedExForum Memphis, Tenn. Well, all the coach s talk may have gotten through to the Baltimore, Md., native. The 6-foot-9 forward leads Conference USA in rebounding with a 10.2 average in all games and an 11.8 average in league games only. His rise to the top rebounding position in C-USA is a result of his double-digit board performances the last two months. From Dec. 2-20, Dorsey had six-straight double figure rebounding games. He averaged 11.7 boards in those contests. Well, after two December games in which he had seven rebounds, Dorsey was on another streak of seven-consecutive contests with double digits on the glass. In that streak (Jan. 4-27), he averaged 12.1 boards per game. This latest streak came to an end when he had nine rebounds in the Tigers win over UCF Jan. 31. He also pulled down nine boards versus SMU Feb. 3. Since arriving at Memphis, Joey Dorsey has hit the double-digit plateau in rebounds 30 times, and the Tigers have won 27 of those games. The 6-foot-9 sophomore forward and the Tigers are looking to carry that trend to 2006-07. So far, so good, with Dorsey grabbing double-digit rebounds in 14 games this year. After a slow start to 2006-07, it seems as if Memphis is ready to begin doubling its pleasure more in the second half of the campaign. Junior Joey Dorsey kicked that off with a 14-point, 11-rebound game (12th career double-double) versus Southern Miss Jan. 13. It was the Tigers fourth double-double performance of 2006-07. In the Jan. 20 win over East Carolina, Robert Dozier recorded Memphis fifth double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 boards. The doubledouble was the fifth of Dozier s career. Dorsey (13th career) made it six double-doubles for Memphis in 2006-07 with 13 points and 11 rebounds versus Tulsa Jan. 24. Earlier this year, Dorsey also had double-doubles against Jackson State (11 points, 13 rebounds) and Manhattan (10 points, 12 rebounds). Dozier (13 points, 10 boards) had his first double-double in the season-opening win over Jackson State. Not only was Memphis a perfect 6-0 in that stretch, but it was also hot from the field. In those six games, the Tigers shot 51.8 percent from the floor. Prior to their incredibly hot shooting in the last two wins over UCF Jan. 31 and SMu Feb. 3, the Tigers had lost the shooting touch that they enjoyed in that six-game span. In the three contests from Jan. 20-27, Memphis shot a combined 36.5 percent from the floor. The Tigers bounced back in a big way in their last two outings versus UCF (57.9 percent) and SMU (60.7 percent). The following is a breakdown of the Tigers shooting this season: Games 1-11 45.2 323-of-715 Games 12-17 51.8 173-of-336 Games 18-20 36.5 62-of-170 Games 21-22 59.3 67-of-113 TIGERS LOSING RECENT BOARD BATTLES Similar to their shooting performances, the Tigers were rolling on the boards in the seven games from Dec. 23-Jan. 20. In those seven contests, Memphis out-rebounded its opponents by a margin of +12.3 boards per game. Included in that stretch were two games in which the Tigers won the battle of the boards by 19 rebounds and one by 20 boards. Part of the success for Memphis came from its tenacity on the offensive boards. In those seven games, the Tigers averaged 14.3 offensive rebounds per game. But, in Memphis two outings against Tulsa Jan. 24 and Southern Miss Jan. 27, the opposition got the better of the Tigers on the glass. Those two opponents out-rebounded Memphis by an average of +5.5 boards per game. In both contests, the Tigers were also out-worked on the offensive boards (19-17 Tulsa; 12-11 Southern Miss). In its last two wins over UCF Jan. 31 and SMU Feb. 3, Memphis regained the advantage on the glass. The Tigers out-rebounded UCF 26-25 and SMU 35-22. BENCH COMING UP BIG FOR TIGERS The last two seasons (2005-06, 2006-07), John Calipari has been using a deep bench to wear down opponents, and in turn, keep his players fresh to finish games. It worked last season, and it seems to be doing the same in 2006-07. In fact, this year s bench is producing more offense than last season. The 2006-07 Tiger bench is accounting for 38.9 percent of the offense (685 of 1762 points), while last year s bench pitched in with 28.5 percent of the offense (844 of 2961 points). Furthermore, at least one reserve has scored in double figures in 19 of the Tigers 22 games this year (Hunt, 17 times; Mack, five times; Cooper, three times; Allen, two times). The Tigers are 17-2 when the bench scores 20 or more points this year. TIGER SUCCESS AT FEDEXFORUM After a rough first year at their new home in 2004-05, the Tigers have bounced back quite nicely and have made FedExForum one of the toughest arenas for opponents to play in. Since the 2005 Conference USA Tournament, Memphis has won 38 of its last 40 home games (.950 winning percentage). Overall, the Tigers have a 48-8 record (.857 winning percentage) at FedExForum. Memphis is 13-0 at home this year. TIGERS STREAKING AT HOME Don t look now, but the Tigers are putting together another homecourt winning streak. Memphis has a 26-game homecourt winning streak, and that is currently the fourth-best in the nation. Gonzaga has the nation s longest homecourt win streak at 49 straight. The following lists the nation s current top-five homecourt win streaks: Team Streak Next Home Game Gonzaga 49 St. Mary s/ Feb. 10 Air Force 28 Utah/Feb. 14 BYU 28 New Mexico/Feb. 14 Memphis 26 Tulane/Feb. 10 G. Memphis now has a 108-17 home mark (.864 winning percentage) under Calipari. The following is the year-by-year home record under Calipari: Year Record Year Record 2006-07...13-0 2002-03...14-2 2005-06...19-1 2001-02...19-2 2004-05...16-7 2000-01...12-5 2003-04...15-0 JANUARY PROVED FRUITFUL FOR TIGERS In the John Calipari era, the new year has usually started with a bang for the Tigers. Since Calipari took over the Memphis hoops program in 2000-01, the Tigers have an impressive 45-10 record (.818 winning percentage) in the month of January. The Tigers won their last 16 January games and 21 of their last 24 contests in the month dating back to 2004-05. MORE ON THE TIGERS JANUARY With its 87-65 win over UCF on Jan. 31, Memphis completed a clean sweep of the month of January. The Tigers finished January with a perfect 8-0 record. However, it was not the first time in the John Calipari era that the Tigers had a perfect January. Memphis posted a perfect 7-0 mark in January in the 2000-01, which was Calipari s first year in the Bluff City. Since the 1970-71 campaign, the Tigers have had five undefeated marks in January, and the following shows that: Year January Record 2006-07...8-0 2000-01...7-0 1985-86...9-0 1983-84...8-0 1972-73...7-0
