VOLLEYBALL Randolph Flechsig President, Davenport University Welcome to the 2008 Davenport University volleyball season! We are extremely proud of our thriving athletics program and the success of Panther sports teams as a key part of our campus growth. A championship season, at DU, is a combination of athletic and academic prowess. First and foremost, our commitment to student athletics is firmly rooted in a rich tradition of academic excellence. Our athletes must excel in the classroom as they make time to practice and compete in sports. Athletics at Davenport enriches the student experience for both athletes and spectators. This year, that student experience will be broadened even further with the opening of our new student center and field house on campus. We are so pleased that our students now have their own facility for sports, social and recreational activities, in addition to a fitness center and other amenities. Thank you for joining us in the inaugural year of our student center on campus and for your support of our outstanding student athletes. GO PANTHERS! Paul Lowden Athletic Director, Davenport University Thank you for your support of Panther athletics! As our sports programs continue to grow, I remain focused on continuing to build a successful athletic program that strives for excellence in three key areas classroom, competition and community. Commitment to high academic standards is our top priority. Across all programs, our student athletes have a cumulative grade point average above 3.20, and several have been named Academic All Americans. In competition, our teams continue to achieve winning seasons, including an American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II national championship, a WHAC conference championship in women s basketball and a Region VIII championship in golf during the past academic year. In our community, our athletes have served as reading mentors, committed time to Habitat for Humanity and worked with a number of youth athletic programs. This year, as we celebrate our new home in the new student center on campus, we will continue to build upon our successes and look toward what we hope will be our best season ever. Good luck to all our teams! 2 DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS

2008 2009 2008 SEASON PREVIEW As the Panther Volleyball Team enters into its third season of competition there is much excitement with nine returning players highlighted by two players making the WHAC All-Freshman Team. 2007 was a season of tremendous improvement as the Panthers won 11 matches and finished in a tie for fifth place in the conference. With an additional seven talented freshmen coming on board this year to challenge for playing time, it appears the Davenport Volleyball team in poised to take its next step towards competing with the top teams in the WHAC. Returning Players: Seniors The Panthers will have only one senior in 2008. Helena Stieg, who led the Panthers in kills for 2007, becomes the first senior in program history. Helena brings three years of varsity experience after transferring to Davenport in 2007 from Grand Rapids Community College. Juniors The Junior class will consist of three players for 2008. Liz Holden begins her second year at Davenport after transferring from Lake Superior State University. Liz is a setter and defensive specialist who led the team in digs for 2007. Sam Mol is one of the only two players who have been on the team from the very beginning and has filled the position role both as an outside hitter and defensive specialist over the past two years. Amanda Schneider has the distinction of being the first player ever to sign on with the Davenport University Volleyball team. Schneider has played a wide variety of positions since first arriving here. From middle hitter to setter and right side to outside, Amanda has played them all. Amanda and Sam were also former teammates at Lowell High School. Sophomores Kayla Vandermolen is the reigning freshman of the year in the WHAC. As a 5 10 setter, Kayla not only ran a very efficient offense but also was a force at the net both in hitting and in blocking. Kayla will be counted on heavily to provide leadership on the court for the 2008 season. Autumn Williams is a middle hitter that also made the WHAC All-Freshman team. Whether hitting or playing defense, Autumn s presence on the court always made a difference. In 8 DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS

5 10 Middle Hitter will join the Panthers after four standout years at Northpointe Christian High School where she earned All-Conference Honors three times. Joining Vanderhyde on the outside will be Taylor Nauta, a 5 10 Outside Hitter from Grand Haven High School. As a senior at Grand Haven, Taylor was she helped lead her team to a conference championship while being selected 1st team All-Conference and All-Area. Heather also receives Class C All-Region honors. Heather will also compete on the Davenport Track Team. As much offense as Head Coach Rick Rykse brought in, he also added a great libero to 2007, Williams finished in the top 15 in the Nation in service aces per game. Joyce Larioza is a high flying middle hitter who led the team in hitting percentage for 2007. She also finished second in kills and was an intimidating blocker at the net with her great reach. Kendra Stieg is a setter by trade who was asked to play right side for the Panthers last year. Kendra is a very energetic player who always gives 100% effort both in practices and games. Although she missed much of the season due to injury, Carrie Bass was always ready to contribute when called upon. Carrie is a defensive specialist and setter whose positive encouragement is infectious to everyone around her. Incoming Freshman: The future of the Panthers program lies in the hands of a very exciting freshman class led by outside hitter Megan Vanderhyde. As a senior at Sparta, Megan was selected 1st Team All-Conference. Megan will also compete on the Davenport Track Team. Anna Wassenaar, a selected 2nd Team All-Area. She also received All-Conference and All-Area 2nd Team honors in basketball. Taylor will also be playing on the Davenport Basketball Team. Also coming from the successful Buccaneers program is Kailey Schultz, a 6 0 Middle Hitter. As a senior, Kailey was selected All- Conference Honorable Mention, 1st Team All-Area, and Honorable Mention All- State. Heather Deal, a 5 9 Outside Hitter, comes to Davenport from Ravenna High School where anchor the defense in Courtney DePriest from Forest Hills Eastern High School. In 2007, Courtney was selected first team All-Conference, All-Region and Honorable Mention All-State in Class B. Rounding out the freshman class will be Caledonia native Lindsey Hooker, a 5 11 Middle Hitter. During her senior year as a Fighting Scot, Lindsey was selected All-Conference. 08 09 VOLLEYBALL 9

VOLLEYBALL 2007 SEASON IN REVIEW After its inaugural year in 2006, the Davenport women s volleyball team looked to make big strides in its second campaign. Led by Head Coach Rick Rykse, the Panthers welcomed five freshmen and one transfer in hopes of gaining their first win in program history, while also making a push for a top-four finish in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference. The schedule featured a road theme for the Panthers, as all but six matches would be played away from home. The University of Michigan-Dearborn Early-Bird Tournament kicked off the season and after dropping two tough matches to regional foes Dearborn and Taylor, the program took a huge step in closing out its first ever win, with a 3-2 victory over University of Rio Grande. The win gave the Panthers confidence, heading into a grueling stretch over the next few weeks as they participated in the Cornerstone Classic and Julie Martin Invitational hosted by Madonna University. Across town at Cornerstone, DU was able to post its first ever 3-0 victory over Malone College. In between the two invites, they picked up two more match victories in a tri-match against Great Lakes Christian and Indiana University Northwest. After dropping four close matches at Madonna, the team was ready for WHAC play and found themselves back on the road at UM-Dearborn. Still looking to post a win in conference play for the first time in school history, the Panthers came out strong against the Wolves and grabbed game one decisively. Dearborn, which was picked to finish in the top three in conference play, came back strong and escaped with a 3-1 victory over the Panthers. Although the team dropped the match, they walked away with added confidence and used it at the Taylor Tournament, where they posted a win over Midland Lutheran in an exciting five-game match, and almost pulling the upset of nationally ranked Cedarville University. WHAC play resumed as Davenport defeated Aquinas College at home for its first ever conference victory. The next match against Indiana Tech proved to be the biggest match in school history, as the Panthers defeated the top team in the WHAC 3-2. DU added three more wins in the WHAC, finishing the conference season in 6th place. The seeding would earn them a first round game against 3-seed Cornerstone University. The Golden Eagles used a balanced attack to defeat DU in three games, which put an end to the Panthers season at 11-28. At the conclusion of the WHAC Tournament, the coaches voted Kayla Vandermolen as the top freshman in the conference and also named her and Autumn Williams to the All-Freshman team. Junior Samantha Mol was named to the WHAC Champions of Character team. The 2007 team set a solid foundation for the future of the women s volleyball program at Davenport University. Things are looking bright for the Panthers for the upcoming season, since the team will not lose any players to graduation, in addition to having an outstanding recruiting class. 18 DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS
