MEDIA & OVERVIEW 2 3 2015 SEASON ITU MEDIA CENTRE - MEDIA.TRIATHLON.ORG ITU s Online Media Centre has been produced to provide a portal for media to quickly gather all relevant information about ITU, its events and athletes. Media Centre services include: Latest ITU news and press releases Up-to-date results, rankings and race statistics Comprehensive athlete profile database Rights-free high-resolution photos from all major events Full audio from athlete interviews Access to broadcast quality race video highlights For more information, or to register for a Media Centre account, visit media.triathlon.org SERIES OVERVIEW The ITU World Triathlon Series was introduced in 2009, creating a series of world championship races rather than a single day world championship. From 2009 until 2011, it was called the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship series, but was re-branded in 2012 as the ITU World Triathlon Series. There will be ten rounds in the 2015 season, culminating with the Grand Final in Chicago in September. The world s top triathletes will compete head-to-head for rankings points that determine the overall ITU world champion, with media and fans able to watch from everywhere with a live international broadcast feed available from every event. NEW FOR THE 2015 SEASON The 2015 WTS season will see a new city added to the schedule, as Abu Dhabi kicks off the ten-event Series. Abu Dhabi marks the first time the World Triathlon Series has touched down in the Middle East, and will set the tone of the season with a fast and furious sprint. While Gold Coast punctuated the 2009 season as the Grand Final host, the Australian coastal city returns for the first time since that inaugural season. While nine of the 10 races have enjoyed at least one year on the World Triathlon Series circuit, a number of them will debut variations of courses from years past. This season, the elites will pass through brand new Green Point Athletics Stadium at World Triathlon Series Cape Town on each bike lap and down the finish chute, offering prime grand stand seating to fans for the entire race. While Gold Coast has once before hosted a World Triathlon Series race, it will this year feature some twists and turns, adding a technical challenge that is sure to fire up the quads. Now steadfast on the WTS, Stockholm s swim will hop across the island for a revised start. 2015 SEASON SCHEDULE Round 1 ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi March 6-7 Round 2 Barfoot & Thompson World Triathlon Auckland March 28-29 Round 3 ITU World Triathlon Gold Coast April 11-12 Round 4 Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town April 25-26 Round 5 ITU World Triathlon Yokohama May 16-17 Round 6 Vitality World Triathlon London May 30-31 Round 7 ITU World Triathlon Hamburg July 18-19 Round 8 Vattenfall World Triathlon Stockholm August 22-23 Round 9 ITU World Triathlon Edmonton September 5-6 Round 10 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Chicago September 15-20

HISTORY 4 5 PRIZE MONEY ITU TRIATHLON HISTORY The first recorded triathlon took place in San Diego, California on 24 September 1974. It was organised by the San Diego Track & Field Club as an alternative to the rigors of training on the track. The race, which took place in San Diego s Mission Bay, consisted of a 5.3-mile run, and followed by a 5-mile bike and a 600-yard swim in the bay. A total of 46 athletes finished the race. The International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in 1989 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, as the world governing body for triathlon and is now headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. A total of 30 National Federations attended the first ITU Congress in Avignon, France in 1989. Today there are over 140 National Federations. The ITU Triathlon World Cup Series began in 1991, staging 11 races in eight countries. The ITU World Triathlon Series was created as ITU s top tier race series in 2009, staging multiple rounds in iconic cities across the globe. Triathlon was awarded full Olympic Games medal status by the IOC at its Congress in Paris in 1994. Triathlon made its Olympic debut at the 2000 Sydney Games. Switzerland s Brigitte McMahon and Canada s Simon Whitfield won the sport s first gold medals. THE BASICS Five of the ITU World Triathlon Series events will be Olympic distance races for the Elite competitors. An Olympic-distance triathlon, also referred to as an intermediate or standard-distance triathlon, combines a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run. Every triathlon includes two transitions (swim to bike and bike to run). Elite athletes typically make these transitions in less than 30 seconds. Average finishing times at world championship or a world cup race are around 1 hour and 50 minutes for the elite men and around 2 hours for the elite women. In 2014, three sprint-distance events have been integrated into the WTS. In London, Hamburg and Stockholm, elite athletes will compete at these shorter races (swim 750m, bike 20km and run 5km). A maximum of 65 men and 65 women may be entered at each World Triathlon Series race, with a maximum of 75 men and women competing in the Grand Final. The ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, which will be held in Chicago in 2015, will also host top-flight sprint and Olympic-distance races for age group athletes, paratriathelets, and juniors and under 23 s, as well as an aquathlon to kick off the action. Amateur athletes will have opportunities to qualify for the World Championship at the World Triathlon Series races in Abu Dhabi, Auckland, Gold Coast, Cape Town, Yokohama, London, Hamburg, Stockholm and Edmonton. The Age-Group Sprint Triathlon World Championship will be held alongside the Grand Final, in which competitors cover a 750m swim, a 20km bike and a 10km run. PRIZE MONEY Each World Triathlon Series race will offer a total of $150,000, while the bonus pool will again offer a total of $755,000. With the addition of two WTS races on the calendar, the overall prize pool has increased to $2.385 million. As in last year, the bonus pool will extend to the top 35 athletes, with the male and female World Champions each taking home $80,000. The Mixed Relay World Championships will see the winning team split a purse of $17,500, with a sum of $70,000 up for grabs in the dynamic woman-man-woman-man triathlon race, while World Cup events offer a total of $480,000. Altogether, athletes will vie for almost $3 million over the course of the 2015 ITU triathlon season, which is a 5% increase from 2014. 2015 POINTS SYSTEM There will be three levels included in the rankings: ITU Triathlon World Cup events, ITU World Triathlon Series events and the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final. The chart below breaks down the scoring. The final ranking will be obtained by adding the five top scores from the World Triathlon Series and ITU Triathlon World Cup events, plus the points gained at the Grand Final. Scoring for a season begins immediately after the Grand Final and ends with the following year s Grand Final. Athletes can only score points from a maximum of four events on the same continent, excluding the Grand Final. Points are awarded to the top 50 athletes at the Grand Final; top 40 for World Championship Series events and top 30 for ITU Triathlon World Cup events. The top five places at each type of event are scored as follows (the full breakdown is available at www.triathlon.org): FINISH POSITION GRAND FINAL POINTS WTS EVENT POINTS EVENT POINTS 1 1200 800 300 2 1110 740 278 3 1027 685 257 4 950 633 237 5 897 586 220 POINT SYSTEM 6 7 2015 RANKINGS 2015 RANKINGS TOP 20 MEN POS FIRST NAME LAST NAME COUNTRY POINTS 1 Jonathan Brownlee GBR 2186 2 Javier Gomez Noya ESP 1967 3 Mario Mola ESP 1809 4 Fernando Alarza ESP 1635 5 Ryan Bailie AUS 1305 6 Richard Murray RSA 1271 7 Pierre Le Corre FRA 1227 8 Vicente Hernandez ESP 1062 9 Crisanto Grajales MEX 1000 10 Richard Varga SVK 903 11 Dan Wilson AUS 842 12 Henri Schoeman RSA 811 13 Joao Pereira POR 778 14 Tony Dodds NZL 764 15 Joao Silva POR 756 16 Vincent Luis FRA 740 17 Justus Nieschlag GER 535 18 Ben Kanute USA 506 19 Igor Polyanskiy RUS 464 20 Marten Van Riel BEL 446 TOP 20 WOMEN POS FIRST NAME LAST NAME COUNTRY POINTS 1.
