Sport and Fitness We re big on sport at the University of South Wales and your first week is the perfect time to get involved. University clubs and teams If you d like to participate in a team or club, here is what you can get involved in: Competitive sports teams Our competitive sports teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league every Wednesday afternoon. We have one of the UK s leading university golf teams who play at the Celtic Manor Resort. Demand for some sports teams is high, so you may need to attend a trial. You ll see that we provide transport to some trials where transport is provided, a return journey is included too. For these teams, you need to register by Tuesday 18 September at or at the Street Fair on Monday 17 September at Newport and Cardiff campus, or at the Freshers Fair on Tuesday 18 September in Treforest. Sport trials take place at Treforest Sport Centre or USW Sport Park. See page 12 for trial information or page 9 for weekly training fixtures. If you are successful in getting a place in one of our teams, you ll be required to pay an annual subscription. Recreational sports These teams meet weekly for training with an instructor, for practice sessions and participation. You don t need to have done the activity before as clubs cater for all abilities, from beginners to the more experienced. You will also pay an annual subscription to be part of these clubs. If we don t have a club that suits you, why not get in touch with the Students Union and find out how to set one up? See page 12 for more details. Get involved! Sport Trials We have a range of USW teams competing in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges) League. Student Societies Students Union societies There are lots of student-run societies across the University and they are a brilliant way to socialise with other students. You ll grow in confidence, develop skills and have the best time possible at university. From our Pizza Appreciation Society to Newport Film Society, there s something for everyone. This might mean representing your course as a Course Representative, or becoming a Student Voice Representative and feeding back the views of your fellow students to the University to shape future learning.
