2017-18 WOMEN S GOLF April 13, 2018 WAVES AT WCC CHAMPIONSHIPS Championships. MALIBU, California The Pepperdine women s golf team will be looking to get back to the top of the league when the West Coast Conference Championships take place next week. EVENT INFO The WCC Championships will be held at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, California. There will be a single round each day between Monday and Wednesday (April 16-18). On Monday, Pepperdine will tee off at #10 beginning at 9:15 a.m. along with BYU and San Francisco. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat. FIELD Pepperdine is one of fi ve WCC schools that sponsor women s golf. In order of current Golfstat ranking, they are: #40 BYU, #50 Pepperdine, #81 San Francisco, #101 Santa Clara and #202 Gonzaga. PEPPERDINE LINEUP The Waves lineup includes junior Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia), sophomore Momoka Kobori (Rangiora, New Zealand), senior Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.), senior Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) and junior Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawai i/img Academy). All fi ve of these Waves have previous WCC Championships experience. Their fi nishes: Haythorne T-16th in 2016; Kobori T-9th in 2017; Naveed T-9th in 2016 and T-4th in 2017; Wijaya 12th in 2015, T-21st in 2016 and 6th in 2017; Zhu 10th in 2015 and 15th in 2017. Current single-season scoring averages for these fi ve players are Naveed 73.96, Kobori 74.88, Zhu 75.29, Wijaya 75.64, Haythorne 75.64. Naveed s average would currently put her at #20 on the Waves single-season list. RANKINGS The Waves are rated 50th nationally by Golfstat and 59th by Golfweek/Sagarin. WCC HISTORY Pepperdine has won 17 of the 21 WCC Championships ever contested, including 14 in a row between 2002 and 2015. Pepperdine individuals have won medalist honors 15 times (the last was Marissa Chow in 2015). The Waves came in second last year behind BYU. ROSTER Led by 25th-year head coach Laurie Gibbs, the seven-player breakdown is two seniors, three juniors, one sophomore and one freshman. There are six returning letterwinners (fi ve with multiple seasons of experience), including all fi ve that fi nished second at the 2017 WCC Championships, third at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional and 23rd at the NCAA HONORS Four Waves have earned All-WCC fi rst team honors in their careers, led by two-time selections Hira Naveed (2016, 2017) and Tatiana Wijaya (2015, 2017). Patricia Wong (2016) and Katherine Zhu (2017) have each made it once. Wijaya (2015) and Kobori (2017) are past WCC Freshmen of the Year. Zhu is a three-time WGCA All-American Scholar and a two-time WCC All-Academic fi rst team honoree. NUMBERS Four Waves currently rank in the school s top 20 for career scoring average: Hira Naveed (#6 at 74.18), Momoka Kobori (#11 at 75.12), Tatiana Wijaya (#16 at 75.61) and Patricia Wong (#18 at 75.86)... Wijaya is tied for seventh place in career below-par rounds (18). SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS Tatiana Wijaya played in the 2017 U.S. Women s Amateur and advanced to match play... Wijaya also represented her native Indonesia at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, where she earned a silver medal... Hira Naveed tied for eighth at the Canadian Women s Amateur Championship... Momoka Kobori had a tie for seventh place at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship. GIBBS Under the direction of Laurie Gibbs, who is now in her 25th season as head coach, Pepperdine has earned a place as one of the nation s top golf programs. Gibbs has been honored 12 times as the WCC s Coach of the Year, was tabbed the West Region Coach of the Year on two occasions and was selected the 2004-05 National Coach of the Year by Golfweek magazine. Gibbs was inducted into the WGCA Coaches Hall of Fame in December 2015. Last season s victory at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate was the 50th tournament win of her career. GOLF HISTORY The Waves have appeared in the NCAA Championships 12 times in the last 19 years, and have recorded eight top-10 fi nishes and four top-fi ve showings, including a program-best second-place result in 2003. The Waves have won West Coast Conference championships in 17 of the last 20 years, including a streak of 14 titles that ran from 2002 to 2015. Twelve different players have earned All-American honors a total of 27 times. LPGA Tour players have included Katherine (Hull) Kirk, Lindsey Wright, Tamie Durdin, Nadina (Taylor) Light, Misun Cho, Carolina Llano, Danielle Kang, Taylore Karle and Grace Na. Hull was the 2003 National Player of the Year and was inducted into the WGCA Hall of Fame in 2012. Kang won back-to-back U.S. Amateur Championships in 2010 and 2011.
