Introduction Kankakee County is located in northeastern Illinois approximately 60 miles south of the City of Chicago. The county is home to 103,833 residents (2000 US Census) and provides a robust and diverse location for industry and commerce. The region and particularly Kankakee County is served by many quality transportation facilities. Interstate 57 flows north - south through the center of the county, Interstate 80 is just 30 miles north of the county line and Interstate 55 is 10 miles west of the county. The area is served by the Greater Kankakee Valley Airport and commercial air service is provided by Midway Airport ( 40 miles north) and O hare Internation Airport (60 miles north). Several railroads transverse the county providing freight service and Amtrak serves the county with a station located along the Canadian National Line in downtown Kankakee. Commuter rail service is available 20 miles north of the county in University Park. The county is served by two public transportation entities. River Valley Metro serves the Greater Kankakee metropolitan Area and SHOWBUS serves rural Kankakee County. Kankakee County contributes $29.9 million annually to the state in sales and use tax. The County has 26.5% of its workforce employed in Services, 18.1% in Manufacturing and 24% in Retail. There are 45,448 persons in Kankakee County s workforce (2000 Census). The County is served by two major hospitals (both with level II trauma centers) and over 200 physicians cover a multitude of medical specialties. This document provides information on the industrial and office areas located within Kankakee County.
