The Travs were held to 16 fewer hits than Thursday s Opening Night game and were shutout after scoring 20. Addison Russell and Miles Head hit early home runs as the Hounds jumped on Travs lefty Michael Roth, who allowed 6 runs in 4 innings. Stingy Bulls The Travelers bullpen has been very good in Midland with 10 shutout innings. Hounds batters are 3-for-34 against Travs relievers. Twenty O Plenty In Thursday s historic 20-7 pummeling of the Midland RockHounds, the Travs scored 20 runs in a game for the second time during the affiliation with the Los Angeles Angels. Both 20-run outputs occurred against the RockHounds, the last time on August 16, 2003 at Ray Winder Field in Little Rock. In that game, the Travs opened a doubleheader with a 21-0 beating of Midland, which remains the largest margin of victory in a shutout in Texas League history. Everyone Gets A Base Hit & Run Scored!!! - On Thursday the Travs just missed a rare feat for a team with all 9 starters collecting a run scored and a base hit, but 8 of the 9 starters had an RBI. Career Night Opener Third baseman Kaleb Cowart opened the season with the best game of his career Thursday with 5 base hits and 5 RBIs. Previously Cowart had 4 hits in a game on 9 occasions including 1 game last year with the Travs. The 5 RBIs ties a career high set in 2012 while playing for Cedar Rapids Lucky Fourteen The Arkansas Travelers began their 14th season as an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. The club s 73-66 regular season record was its best since 1998. During the affiliation with the Angels, the Travs hold a record of 863-1061 (.449 pct) and own two Texas League titles (2001, 2008). The 2014 season is the last on a two-year player development contract signed in September 2012. The Travs posted a 2363-2393 record in 35 years as a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate from 1966-2000. Hounding The Travs Since the 2005 season the Travs have found limited success against the RockHounds with a 43-71 victory after last night s loss. The Travs went 7-5 against the Hounds in 2013 including a 4-2 record in Midland. Transaction Junction The Angels announced a transaction before the start of the season after claiming relief pitcher Michael Brady off waivers from the Miami Marlins and assigning him to the Travs. Brady, a the 2013 Southern League saves leader and All Star, also took the last spot on the Angels 40-man roster. To make room for Brady, reliever Eduard Santos was placed on the disabled list. Rehabbing Angel The Angels also have assigned MLB relief pitcher Dane De La Rosa to pitch in 2 games for the Travs while rehabbing a right forearm strain. De La Rosa will become just the second MLB rehab to appear for the Travs in a game during the Angels affiliation, the last being Robert Coello in August and September of 2013. De La Rosa is active for tonight s game and is expected to pitch 1 inning. Wellman Leads Travs A veteran of 28 seasons in professional baseball, new Travs manager Phillip Wellman is back in a familiar role as manager where he owns a 862-939 record in 15 minor league seasons, including eight years as a manager in the Southern League with the Mississippi Braves (2007-2010) and Chattanooga Lookouts (1999, 2001-2003). Most recently Wellman was the hitting coach for the Springfield Cardinals from 2011 through 2013 and tutored Texas League Players of the Year (Matt Adams - 2011 and Oscar Taveras - 2012). Wellman, a native of Bulverde, Texas, managed the M-Braves to the 2008 Southern League Championship. Wellman went into coaching in 1988 with the Atlanta Braves organization after the end of a four-year playing career as an outfielder and infielder in the minor leagues. He took his first managerial post in 1992 with the Gulf Coast Orioles and managed four years in Rookie-level affiliated baseball. His first full-season managing job came with Winston-Salem in 1996 in the Carolina League beginning his eight-year stint in the Cincinnati Reds farm system.
