From the Lesson Tee By J.D. Carino What is hinging (of the wrist).. One of the common errors amongst amateurs is the placement of the club in the left hand. When done incorrectly, it will prevent you from hinging the wrist. Hinging adds a second lever to your swing and increase swing speed tremendously. The placement of the left hand grip is diagonally across the fingers (red line) and underneath the heel. Most times the grip is held under the thumb pad (blue line), great for putting but disastrous for full swing. On the back swing, with the left arm at 9 o clock (even with the ground) the club shaft should be at a right angle (90 degrees) with the correct hinge. Any questions or for lessons, please visit CochraneGolfSchools.com or call J.D. (813) 957-3205.

TURF TALK As we jump into February hopefully we leave behind the cold, wet weather that was January. I ve lived in Florida now for a little over a decade and can t remember a colder month thus far. Even though Mother Nature hasn t cooperated fully over the last several weeks, the turfgrass around the course has pulled through as expected. As we did towards the end of January, we will continue to fertilize, topdress and aerify on a monthly basis to allow the greens to improve and stay consistent. Just like you and me, the plant is a living, breathing organism that needs oxygen to survive. We achieve this through aerification, which releases toxic carbon dioxide and supplies more oxygen to the rootzone, thus allowing the roots to grow healthier. Topdressing is means to smooth the putting surface. By applying a light layer of sand, we fill any of the imperfections on the surface, such as ball marks. A bulk application was applied to tees and fairways in the beginning of January. Even though we had some pretty chilly days mixed in, the fertilizer that was chosen should last longer due to more slow release tendencies; this means the fertilizer granule will break down over a 12 week period. Towards the end of last month we applied an iron and wetting application to help with color and moisture management. My goal for February is too clean up the Poa annua that popped up due to the cooler weather. We will be attacking collars, fairways, tee and green slopes with post-emergent herbicides. Please don t hesitate to reach out with any comments or concerns. Best Regards, Drew Summerill
