This was the first year in many for Weddington to have a dive team, and it was a great season! We had over 30 divers on our team, which is an amazing turn out! Almost all of our divers were new to the sport, but that didn't slow them down at all! We were at a disadvantage compared to the other teams because we

weren't able to practice on spring boards every day. However, despite this disadvantage, we won our second meet and we came close to winning our fourth meet. To put our season in perspective, it took the last new team to the league 2 years to win their first meet. Overall for the season we came in fourth in our league. Our divers were extremely dedicated; they had practice every weekday and then a Saturday practice at Sardis to use their spring boards. This dedication paid off and all the kids improved quickly and many won or placed in the top of their age groups. Divers Bernard, Abby Brupbacher, Drew Burns, Mason Cahill, Cassandra Chapman, Sarah Costen, Emmie Costen, Jamesy Costen, Sage Cramer, Michael Despard, Bridget Evans, Rachel Garvey, Lauren Haring, Maddy Hicks, Neely Holdren, Tate Ibach, Madison Ibach, Reagan Knupp, Bryson Kralich, Tanner Kralich, Addie Laxton, Gracie Laxton, Jacob Litton, Riley Miller, Carleigh Morgan, Hannah Sandy, Abby Schmitt, Kennedy Schrader, Hannah Sidney, Xavier Snyder, Maggie Weaver, Mark Wyatt, Riley Faye I would like to send thanks to all of the parents who brought their kids to practice every day, and volunteered at meets. This was a new sport for the parents as well and they were so supportive! Please join us as we honor Grace McGrath, a very special little girl in our community and our very own Weddington Swim &

Racquet Club. The McGrath family, Sean, Jennifer, Nate & Grace have been active members of our club since 2008. Jennifer has enjoyed tennis, while both Nate and Grace have participated in the Jr Tennis Program and are Weddington Wahoo swim team members! All of the proceeds generated by this benefit will be donated 100% to The Cure Starts Now Foundation in honor of Grace. Grace was diagnosed in November 2009 with an aggressive, inoperative tumor of the brainstem. She received 6 weeks of radiation therapy in November and December. As in so many cases where this terrible disease has struck, her parents have sought multiple medical opinions from specialists all over the United States regarding different treatment options. Research has been very limited due to under-funding and lack of awareness. Because of the limited attention that this disease has received, in over 30 years since its discovery, there have not been any treatments proven to change the outcome of this aggressive tumor. Throughout her journey, Grace's courage and strength have been exceptional, and she has been an inspiration to everyone she meets. By participating in this benefit, your contribution will help in the effort of finding a cure and together, with your support, we will transform a community of heartbreak into a community of hope. The evening will begin with a Happy Hour at 5:00PM (BYOB). There will be food fellowship and fun tennis games for all. Tennis will begin at 6:00 PM and will be doubles format (mix of players/ratings). The entry fee for tennis participants is $25.00 per person, limited spots available. The fee for non-tennis participants is $10.00 per person. All are invited to attend! If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please contact Jennifer Wyatt at jennwyatt@msn.com or Arlene Boyne at aboyne@windstream.net Sign Up By - Monday September 13 th. Playing Tennis? Please send an email to Ann Hatton at WSRCTennis@aol.com with your USTA Rating. You may self rate if you are not USTA rated. Not Playing Tennis? WSRC Men s Tennis August 2010 July Almost as HOT as Rich Gallagher With temperatures in the mid to upper 90 s most of the month, Rich Gallagher was the only thing hotter than the weather. After running away with the Ball Busters championship in May, Rich added the Weddington USTA Men s 4.0 Singles and Men s 4.0 Doubles honors to his haul for 2010. In front of a sell-out crowd of about 25 people, Rich and partner Rodney Captain Morgan bettered a strong Jim Waud / Mark Miller team in some of the best tennis ever seen on the Mike Murphy court. Waud wins the award for best tennis outfit sporting a bumble bee yellow shirt with matching shoes and at last count 7 different hats and sweat bands adorning his uncle-fester-styledcranium. The Gilligan Hat was a crowd favorite. Overall, Weddington men had a strong showing with Steve Gale losing the Men s 3.5 Singles Championship to Dave Johnson of Blakeney (errrggg!) and newcomer Dave Cordier taking the Men s 3.0 Singles title. Congrats to everyone who survived the heat! Fall Combo Leagues coming together Strong interest in Fall USTA Combo leagues will see Weddington fielding as many as 9 Men s teams, plus 1 Men s 4.0 Super Senior team. New courts are coming along just in time

Results of the WSRC Member Survey Part 1 of a 3 Part Series Fast Facts, Q s and A s The 2010 Survey of Weddington Swim and Racquet members were conducted to measure the thoughts and opinions of members regarding many areas of the club. 286 Individuals Responded to the On-Line Survey. 622 unique e-mail addresses were assembled from the Whispers distribution list and e-mail distributions from various members. At the time the survey was sent, the club had 514 member families 53% of those that responded have been members for 5 or more years. 75% of Respondents said they use the pool 75% of Respondents said they use the tennis facilities 80% Said they read Whispers Frequently Only 30% said they use the website Frequently 40 Printed Pages of write-in comments were submitted Q. I did not receive the Survey! Why? A. We either didn t have your e- mail or we had a bad e-mail. Your opinion still matters. If you see something that needs attention, speak up! Also, Give Lori a good e-mail. This Whispers article will focus on What The Members Said. Articles in the September and October issues will focus on what actions will be taken on the tennis and pool areas of the club, as a result of the survey. If the findings of the survey could be summed up into one phrase, that phrase is Be Fiscally Conservative. This message was reflected in the willingness to pay more as well as the write in comments. A $10-$20 a month fee increase to fund approved projects had a 35% NOT In Favor and a 35% In Favor response. Moving up to $30-$40 a month increase the numbers were heavily slanted towards NOT in Favor (77% vs 6%). Member Assessments, Bank Financing, and Member Financing each had greater than 50% disapproval. The message is clear. A small increase for a tangible benefit may be agreeable by the membership at large, but in general, low fees and low debt is the way to go. As for the current staff, including Tennis pro s, Office Staff, and Pool personnel, the opinion of the members is positive: Pool Staff 79% Positive Life Guards 76% Positive Maintenance 79% Positive Cleanliness 75% Positive Safety 76% Positive Tennis Staff 100% Positive Tennis Pro s 84% Positive Court Maintenance 84% Positive Furniture 71% Positive Office Staff 92% Positive Board 65% Positive The members have spoken. The board and staff have listened. Next month look for actions that will be taken as a result of what you said!
