This is equivalent to winning baseball s Little League World Series. This was not an overnight quest as it all started back in the spring of this year when their local club team from WSRC won their division in
Charlotte. Winning that, qualified them to compete in July at the State tournament held in Greenville, NC. Once again, they competed against teams from all over the state and took home the title of NC Champions. This qualified them to represent the state of NC to compete in the Southern District tournament consisting of players from 9 other states. This tournament was held in August, the week before school started, in Mobile, Alabama. The competition was even greater playing against the other states in the Southeast. Having been to this tournament twice before, the WSRC players were really hoping to come home victorious this time. In the final match against their nemesis, from the state of Georgia, they finally conquered their opponents on the third try and won the Southern Sectional tournament. Only then were they qualified to compete for the National Championship title. The team took off to Surprise, Arizona on October 20th to compete against 16 other sectional winners throughout the entire United States and Caribbean Islands. After 2 days of competition, they were amongst the top 4 in the nation. Their last two opponents proved to be worthy competitors but couldn t withstand the teamwork of the Weddington Racquets. In the end, Southern California and Florida fell to the consistency of play among the 9 players on this team. Out of a total of 300 games that could be won, WSRC only gave up 9 games and had a final score of 291 games won. The Weddington Racquets became the first team from North Carolina to win the National Championship. This championship was eight months in the making with lots of practice and personal sacrifices amongst the players and parents, but it was well worth it in the end! The 9 National Champions include: Nate Bryson of Charlotte Christian School, Sahil Vasa of Weddington High School, Jackson Plyler of Weddington Middle School, Woody Watson of Marvin Ridge High School, William Hatt, Carra Clemons and Caytie Clemons of Weddington Middle School, Kennedy Schmitt of West Forsyth High School and Camie Hobson of Providence High School. Congratulations Team!!! Pictured Above Left to Right: Carra Clemons, William Hatt, Nate Bryson, Jackson Plyer, Woody Watson, Sahil Vasa, Camie Hobson, Kennedy Schmitt & Caytie Clemons Congratulations to Weddington High School Tennis Team Members Casey Rowe and Heidi Swope for finishing second in the State High School Doubles Championships and to Jasmine Gabriel for finishing 3 rd in the singles. They won their regional s to qualify for the States.
USTA Team Formation Guidelines: 1. Teams should be filled with like ratings first and then filled in with lesser ratings (if necessary). ADULT TENNIS Congratulations to the WSRC s USTA COMBO Teams that qualified to play in the State Tournament held in Wilmington, NC 5.5-Boyne 7.5 Senior-Stallings 8.5 Super Senior-Laney Best of Luck! Tennis News Mens & Ladies USTA Spring 2012 Adult/Senior Leagues **NEW WSRC GUIDELINES** Weddington Swim & Racquet Club ( WSRC ) throughout its history has consistently fielded the top number of Adult and Senior USTA teams in the Mecklenburg/Union County area. With over 300 participating tennis members, this is only one of the reasons that it is paramount that captains correspond with WSRC regarding formation of USTA teams. Communication ensures that we have the appropriate number of courts reserved and helps us assess court usage, maintenance, etc. Although registration for USTA does not begin until the beginning of January, 2012, the buzz is here! 2. Teams will be comprised of WSRC members. The use of non-members will be allowed only after member options have been exhausted. We recognize there is a need for certain rating groups who do not have a sufficient number of members to field a full team will need to invite non-members. In those particular circumstances approval by Mike Murphy, Club Director is necessary. a. If utilizing nonmember(s) to fill your team, such nonmember(s) must pay a WSRC Nonmember Fee of $50.00. b. A nonmember may play out of WSRC for no more than two (2) seasons. c. If you feel that you have a special circumstance regarding the use of non-member(s), you must contact Mike Murphy, Club Director, prior to the formation of your team for approval to play out of WSRC. Please do not register your team with non-members without this approval. d. Once teams have been formed, the captains are responsible for the administration of the teams. WSRC will not be responsible for the particulars of the running of the team, the number of times a player shall play, etc.
2. Captains shall submit their Team (Adult/Senior), USTA Rating and Roster of Players (include USTA rating). The roster should also indicate the use of nonmembers (if applicable). Please submit your team information to Lori Osier, Office Manager at mail@wsrc.us as soon as you have decided to form a team. Your preliminary roster should be submitted and may be updated once finalized. We wanted to bring this to your attention as you may start to see information regarding the restructuring on the USTA website. However it is our understanding from our North Carolina Local League Coordinators that the league restructuring will not occur until 2013 although some other sections might start to restructure in 2012. We will keep you posted if things should change. USTA League Restructuring for 2013 Currently, the USTA League is divided into Adult (18 & Over), Senior (50 & Over), Super Senior (60 & Over and 70 & Over), Mixed Doubles (18 & Over), Senior Mixed (50 & Over), Combo Doubles (18 & Over), Senior Combo Doubles (50 & Over) and Super Senior Combo Doubles (60 & Over). The Adult Division is singles and doubles, while the Senior, Super Senior, Mixed Doubles, and Combo Doubles were played as solely doubles matches. The new structure will have just three divisions Adult, Mixed Doubles, and Combo Doubles. The Adult Division will be composed of 18 & Over, 40 & Over, 55 & Over and 65 & over; the 18 & Over and the 40 & Over will feature both singles and doubles, while the 55 & Over and 65 & over will be solely doubles. The Mixed Doubles Division will be comprised of the 18 & Over and 40 & Over levels. The increasingly popular Combo Doubles division will mirror the Adult Division with the 18 & Over, 40 & Over, and 55 & Over levels. As before, participants will continue to compete at their NTRP level for each category. WSRC Guest Fee Reminder Guest Fees apply to all in town tennis guests playing at our courts.
