SEASON PREVIEW RAISING THE BAR The Oakland University Golden Grizzlies team has seen its share of success since the program made the move to Division I, winning an outright conference title in 2001-02, qualifying for the NCAA tournament in 2005-06, and the Women s NIT in 2006-07. This year, the Golden Grizzlies will look to build on that success. The Oakland University Golden Grizzlies take to the hardwood for the 2006-07 season with lofty expectations. If the Grizzlies progress over the past two seasons is any indication, the expectations are certainly well within reason. After winning the Mid-Continent Conference tournament in 2005-06, the Golden Grizzlies came up just short of a return to the NCAA tournament in 2006-07, falling to Oral Roberts in the Mid-Con tournament championship game. For their efforts in the 2006-07 season, the Golden Grizzlies were picked for the Women s NIT field, hosting a first-round game against Kentucky. This year, the Golden Grizzlies bring a young but experienced team to the court in the hopes of returning to the NCAA tournament and capturing another conference championship. Setting the tempo for the Golden Grizzlies is firstteam pre-season All-Summit League selection Jessica Pike. Pike, a returning first team All-Conference selection, averaged 13.3 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per game for the Golden Grizzlies in 200607. Pike is joined by seven other returning players that will provide veteran leadership for Oakland s six newcomers and set a solid foundation for the future of the program. Of the 14 players on the roster, the Golden Grizzlies feature just three seniors - center Rachel Bryer, forward Charlese Greer, and guard Liz Sowers. Bryer, a 6-4 post player from St. Clair, Mich., saw limited action as a junior, averaging 0.6 points and 0.9 rebounds after transferring to Oakland from St. 4 www.ougrizzlies.com

Clair Community College. Sowers, a 5-9 guard from Hesston, Kan. transferred to OU from Hesston College and averaged 1.2 points and 1.2 rebounds per game in her first season with Oakland. Greer figures to settle into the sixth man role for the Golden Grizzlies this season after transferring from Schoolcraft College as a sophomore and averaging 5.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game as a junior. Point guard Riikka Terava returns for her junior campaign with the Golden Grizzlies after averaging a team-high 3.2 assists per game as a sophomore. A two-year letterwinner, Terava is averaging 4.3 points per game entering the 2006-07 season. Terava and Pike figure to be joined in the starting guard rotation by junior April Kidd. A fellow two-year letterwinner, Kidd is averaging 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game over her career for the Golden Grizzlies. A talented pair of sophomores figure to round out the starting rotation for the Golden Grizzlies, as both Melissa Jeltema and Hanna Reising return this season. A 5-9 sophomore from Grand Rapids, Mich., Jeltema averaged 7.1 points and 3.9 rebounds as a freshman in 2006-07. Jeltema will be looked upon to be one of OU s leaders on the rebounding glass as one of OU s two starting forwards. Reising started 27 of 32 games for the Golden Grizzlies in 2006-07, and averaged 9.0 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest. Standing 5-11, Reising is far from the typical forward, proving to be a deadly threat from three-point range in addition to inside. Centenary 58 (First Place votes in parentheses) SEASON PREVIEW starting lineup, a talented cast of newcomers will be looked upon to provide an immediate impact for the Golden Grizzlies this season and add to the solid foundation for the future. Sophomore Aubrey Freshour transferred in this season from Ferris (Mich.) State University, averaging 2.9 points and 1.8 rebounds per contest for the Bulldogs. Standing 5-11, Freshour provides depth at the forward position and should boost the Golden Grizzlies defense off the bench. Making their collegiate debuts this season are freshmen Brittany Carnago, Stacey Farrell, Kirstie Malone, Anna Patritto, and Courtney Walters. Carnago, a 6-2 forward/center from St. Clair, Mich. will provide immediate help for the Golden Grizzlies this season inside the key with both her rebounding and shot blocking ability. Farrell, a high school teammate of Carnago will provide depth at the point guard position. Both Farrell and Carnago earned all-state honors at St. Clair HS. Malone, a 5-9 guard will provide versatility at both the guard and forward position. An honorable mention all-state selection, Malone will provide a solid shooting touch for the Golden Grizzlies. Patritto, a 5-10 forward from Howell, Mich., provides Oakland with another solid inside presence., while Walters, a 5-4 guard from Flushing, Mich. will provide a perimeter threat for the Golden Grizzlies. The Golden Grizzlies young but talented squad will be tested early, as they will take on the most ambitious schedule in OU history. The Golden Grizzlies will face SEC powers Auburn and Georgia, as well as perennial NCAA tournament contenders West Virginia and Florida State this season.
