Barrios appeared in 21 games last season and made one start. She average 6.2 minutes per game off the bench and earned her first collegiate start in ASU s win over Wake Forest on Dec. 29, 2010. Other than the injury to Barrios, Appalachian State is healthy entering the second week of the season. SYDNOR SHINES Freshman Maryah Sydnor had an absolutely scintillating, super-sensational home debut for the Apps. The Diaper Dandy scored 20 points and snagged eight rebounds off the bench against the Lady Bucs. So far this season, the freshman phenom is averaging 10.3 points per game. Sydnor is shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the line this season. She has also added seven steals on the defensive side of the ball this season, the third-highest total on the team. Stifling the Opposition Appalachian has currently forced double-digit turnovers in 70 straight games, dating back to the start of the 2009-10 season. The Black and Gold s active defense also forced at least 17 turnovers by all of but four of its opponents a year ago. Appalachian State registered 120 total blocks last season. The Apps ranked fourth in the conference in blocks, averaging 3.8 per game. Having set ASU s single season blocks record during the 2009-10 season with 92 blocked shots, Anna Freeman finished last season with 45 blocks. Anna Freeman has tallied 137 career blocks putting her second on ASU s career blocks list. ASU s suffocating defense limited 20 of its 32 opponents to a stifling 40 percent or below field goal percentage. The team s best defensive effort came against Wake Forest when it held the Demon Deacons to just 57 points and a dismal 24.6 field goal percentage. The Apps also held 13 opponents to less than 60 points and were a stout 13-1 in those games. For the first time since the 1976-77 season ASU held two opponents to below 40 points in the same season, limiting Western Carolina to 36 and CofC to 39. The 36 points are fourth fewest ASU has ever allowed an opponent in program history and the 39 points are the sixth fewest. ASU held Elon to just 48 points in the SoCon Tournament semifinals, the fewest points the Apps have ever held an opponent in tournament action. ASU out-rebounded its foes in all games but six (season-opener vs. Marshall, at Maryland, at Georgia Southern, vs. Wofford and South Carolina, vs. Western Carolina - rebounds tied). Record Watch Anna Freeman is currently on the move in several categories in the ASU record books. The junior currently ranks second in Appalachian State history in blocks (146) and fifth in steals (182) She also ranks 16th in ASU history with 538 career rebounds and is just three away from taking over the 15th-place spot on the list. She has scored 885 points in her career and needs just 115 more to become the 20th player in school history with 1,000 career-points. Canesha Edwards currently ranks 17th in school history with 533 career rebounds. Catherine Williams ranks seventh in ASU history with 75 career blocks. BY THE NUMBERS 1 Player that scored in double-digits for ETSU on Monday night. The Appalachian defense did not allow any player other than ETSU s Natalie Pickwell (23) to score more than nine points. 2 Consecutive games with 20 or more points for Anna Freeman. She became the first ASU player to accomplish the feat since Sam Ramirez did it last January. 9 Road wins on Saturday s for the Mountaineers under head coach Darcie Vincent. ASU is 9-7 in 16 road games played on Saturday over the past four seasons with four of those losses coming in Vincent s first season. The apps are 8-3 since then. 15 Wins against schools from midmajor conferences outside the SoCon since Darcie Vincent s arrival in Boone. ASU is 15-8 against non-conference opponents from mid-major conferences. 31 Offensive rebounds for Appalachian State on Monday night. East Tennessee State managed just 34 total rebounds in the 2011-12 home opener. 50 Blocks that Anna Freeman needs to break the all-time career block record at Appalachian State. She currently has 142 blocks in her career. 70 Straight games that Appalachian has forced 10 or more turnovers. The Apps forced 34 against ETSU on Monday. 115 Points that Anna Freeman needs to hit the 1,000-point mark for her career. Freeman should become the 20th player in ASU history to reach the 1,000-point plateau at some point this season. Fresh faces Appalachian State announced the addition of four players to the team for the 2012-13 season. Darcie Vincent s recruiting class is comprised of two players from North Carolina, one from Ohio and one from South Carolina. The class includes LaShawna Gatewood (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg), Bria Huffman (Clover, S.C./Clover), Khadejah Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and Farrahn Wood (Lewsiville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day School). facing the giants Despite its status as a mid-major school, Appalachian will not shy away from facing big-time competition this season. Appalachian State took on ACC foe Virginia in the season opener and travels to SEC power Georgia later in the season. The Bulldogs, who made a run to the NCAA Sweet 16 a year ago, are ranked 10th in both the AP Poll and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Virginia showed the nation that it is a forced to be reckoned with after defeating perennial national power Tennessee in overtime last week. Last time out ASU picked up and 89-65 win over East Tennessee State in its 2011-12 home opener. Anna Freeman and Maryah Sydnor each scored 20 points in the contest and three other players hit double digits. Appalachian shot 41.0 percent and had as many made free throws (22) as ETSU did made field goals. The Mountaineers outscored the Lady Bucs 22-14 from the line, 48-26 in the paint and 36-13 off turnovers. Appalachian State finished with 31 offensive rebounds while ETSU grabbed 34 rebounds total.
