2011-12 Nebraska Season Preview The 2011-12 Nebraska swimming and diving squad dives into the uncharted waters of the Big Ten for the first time in school history. The Huskers finished their involvement with the Big 12 in June, and the 2011-12 season marks the first in the Big Ten. Nebraska returns five seniors from last season s squad, including Bobbi Balogh, Mailene Leslie, D Arcy Schmidt, Riley Seidel and Caroline Shea. The senior class combined for 34 top-five finishes in 2010-11, including three victories. Bobbi Balogh (pronounced BAY-log) plans to finish strong for the Huskers during her senior season. Balogh looks for continued improvement in the 500 freestyle after setting her personal-best time (5:14.62) at the 2011. Balogh blew through the pool in the 400 IM, clocking a 4:48.03 to finish 24th. She added a personal best at the Missouri Invitational in December, swimming the 1,650 freestyle in 18:02.56. The Lincoln Southeast graduate was also a standout in the classroom, capturing first-team academic All-Big 12 accolades as well as spots on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of 2010-11. Leslie enters her final year as a Husker looking to continue the gains she displayed in 2010-11. After contributing seven top-five finishes and taking 19th in the 1,650 free at the 2011, Leslie will be a big part of the Huskers freestyle and IM corps. The native of Corvallis, Ore., also performed well in the classroom, claiming secondteam academic All-Big 12 accolades and spots on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of 2010-11. Schmidt returns as Nebraska s most experienced diver hoping to leave a lasting impression on her teammates. The senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., finished among the top three divers three times as a junior, and was able to provide guidance to the younger divers as the program s veteran. Seidel (pronounced SY-del) is coming into her senior year riding a wave of momentum. She set three personal-best times at the 2011 Big 12 Championships for the second year in a row and plans on more improvement throughout her final season at Nebraska. Seidel added a victory in the 1,000 free against UNO, while adding a second-place showing in the 500 free against the Mavericks. The La Crosse, Wis., native, also earned spots on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of 2010-11. Seidel will continue to be a valuable member of the freestyle and IM corps. Shea returns to the Huskers for her final season hoping to continue to build on the momentum of her first three seasons. Shea earned 17 top-five finishes during her junior campaign. Seven of Shea s 17 topfive finishes were in the 200 freestyle, an event that she will be a big part of this season. She owns the top returning time in the 200-freestyle at 1:51.89. The freestyle/backstroke specialist earned a second-place finish against UNO in the 100-yard free. She also set a career-best time in the 500 free at the 2011 Big 12 Championships, where she claimed a 22nd-place finish. In the classroom, Shea earned second-team academic All-Big 12 honors and a nod on the 2011 Big 12 Commissioner s Spring Honor Roll. This year s senior class is replacing a larger class from 2010-11 with seven departed seniors, including Claire Desormey, Julie Giehl, Kelsey Grushecky, Blaine Hoppenrath, Brandie Kavalec, Meredith Matthies and Rachell McClain. During last year s campaign, that group totaled 77 top-five finishes, including 10 event wins. It will be difficult to replace the production of 2010-11 s senior class, but it is a challenge that this group of seniors has accepted and strive to accomplish. Following the seniors, the highly-talented junior class is comprised of nine swimmers and divers who compiled 119 top-five finishes in 2010-11. Kailey Creek, Ellan Dufour, Amy Herman, Hayley Martin, Alyson Ramsey, Ashley Reiter, Kaitlan Walker, Ariel Weech and Sara Weinberg make up the talented junior class that hopes to help elevate Nebraska in the Big Ten for the next two seasons. Ellan Dufour returns for her junior season, owning two of 2010-11 s top-returning times in each the 100- and 200-yard backstroke (55.08, 2:01.08). After amassing 36 top-five finishes in her first two seasons at Nebraska, Dufour will be looking for more in 2011-12. Dufour has been a force in the 100 and 200 backstroke at the conference level her first two seasons, posting four top-15 finishes at the Big 12 meet as a freshman and sophomore. Weech also owns two top returning times in the 50- and the 100-yard freestyle. Weech will continue to push the freestyle corps in 2011-12 after a successful sophomore season. The 200-yard medley relay team swam the fastest relay in school history (1:41.08) with Weech as the anchor leg. Weech will continue as a go-to freestyle performer for the Huskers as a junior. Three other juniors own a top returning performance in an event, including Herman (Platform, 246.10), Larson (200 IM, 2:04.97) and Martin (200 Freestyle, 1:49.43). Morgan Flannigan, Ashleigh Grammar, Shannon Guy, Payton Michaud, Bailey Pons, Mary Beth Rye, Kristin Strecker and Megan Ziemann enter their second seasons of collegiate swimming. The talented sophomores swam well in their freshman campaigns, tallying 90 top-five finishes on the year. That number looks to improve this year with the addition of UNO transfer Mary Beth Rye. Pons opened the most eyes during her freshman year, earning the fastest times of the year in three events (500 freestyle: 4:49.05, 1,000 freestyle: 10:12.69, 1,650 freestyle: 16:38.14). Pons dominated, capturing more than 20 top-five finishes to lead the team in 2010-11. Pons also exploded for a team-best 13 victories on the year. Pons tied with Kelsey Grushecky for the best individual finish by a Husker swimmer at the, finishing sixth in the 1,650 freestyle. In Pons debut season in 2010-11, she immediately jumped into the NU record books and hopes to continue climbing the Husker charts in her second season, while helping Nebraska transition into the Big Ten Conference. Michaud also returns to the Huskers owning two of the three top-returning dives from 2010-11 (One meter: 284.15. Three meter: 297.98). Michaud immediately became one of NU s most successful divers in her freshman season. The Lincoln, Neb., native claimed Nebraska highest individual finish at the 2011 with a fifth-place performance in the one-meter diving competition. She earned multiple wins in both the one- and three-meter dives as a true freshman and looks to continue her development as a sophomore in 2011-12. Nebraska has added seven promising freshmen who will debut in their first seasons against Big Ten competition. The freshman class includes multiple swimmers who have competed on national teams and won numerous state high school swimming championships. The Huskers open their inaugural Big Ten schedule with the annual Scarlet v. Cream Intrasquad meet on Sept. 30 at the Devaney Natatorium. The annual intrasquad event will be followed by the annual Alumni Meet on Oct. 8. The Huskers open the regular season by taking on South Dakota State in their first official dual as members of the Big Ten on Oct. 22. The Huskers defeated the Jackrabbits last season, 175-91. The squad will travel to the Rice Invitational on on Oct. 28 in Houston, Texas. Nebraska will enter their first Big Ten Conference competition on Nov. 11 as the divers head to Minneapolis to take part in the Minnesota Invitational. In addition to the season-opening dual with South Dakota State, Nebraska will face several other familiar foes this season, including UNO, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa State. The Huskers faced all five of those teams a year ago, posting a 3-2 against the group, with wins over SDSU, UNO and Iowa State. The swimmers will also compete in an invitational at new Big Ten brethren Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., Nov. 18. The Husker divers will follow with a trip to Iowa City for the Iowa Invitational on Dec.2. That event will give the Huskers an early look at the well used for the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Nebraska will make its inaugural Big Ten Championship appearance back in Iowa City at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, Feb. 15-18. All 12 members of the Big Ten Conference sponsor a women s swimming and diving team, which will provide a much deeper field of competition than the six-team field in the Big 12 the Huskers have competed against since 1996. Indiana claimed the 2011 Big Ten crown, while Minnesota took runner-up honors. Ohio State finished third and Penn State claimed fourth place. I think we all realize it is more than the sum of success of one individual. We want to bond as a team and be firing on all cylinders. If we can do that, our expectations are quite high. We can also be happy with putting together a solid team performance if the swimmers and divers come together. --Nebraska Coach Pablo Morales Coach Pablo Morales enters his 11th season at the helm of the Nebraska swimming and diving program.
