News From The American Le Mans Series - VIR 2012 www.michelinalley.com

2 TOMMY MILNER TOMMY MILNER RIGHT ON SCHEDULE Yes, Virginia, there is a prospective 2012 American Le Mans Series champion in your ranks. Leesburg s Tommy Milner and Corvette Racing co-driver Oliver Gavin roll into the paddock for the inaugural American Le Mans Series event at Virginia International Raceway, driving ever closer to the 2012 ALMS GT class drivers championship, a title that would put Milner on the way to star status. With three wins and seven podiums in eight ALMS starts, Milner and Gavin hold a 28-point lead in the championship with just two races remaining. They also have two of a racer s best friends - momentum and confidence - going for them. For England s Gavin, age 39, ALMS Championship runs are old hat; he has three already in a distinguished ALMS career that now includes 37 ALMS race wins. Gavin will make his 100th career ALMS start here at VIR. Things are a bit different for the 25-year-old Milner. Milner joined Corvette Racing from archrival BMW for the start of the 2011 season. His first big win for Corvette came under heavy pressure last June at the fabled 24 Hours of Le Mans. That win, and a fresh pairing with Gavin for 2012, have further bolstered Milner s confidence and performance. The two have broken out of the incredibly tight GT pack to become the drivers to beat in 2012 GT competition. Milner and Gavin combined for an impressive win at Long Beach, Milner s first in ALMS competition, then immediately backed it up with another win at Monterey. A third win came at Mid-Ohio. The Corvette Racing team, engineers, program manager Doug Fehan, and the classy, quick, and experienced Gavin have all played important roles in Milner s growth. Now, as the only driver to have raced with both the current BMW and Corvette factory teams, Milner has a good perspective on the relative strengths of each car and team Changing manufacturers and teams also meant a switch to MICHELIN tires, a change that suits Milner s style. In his second season with Corvette, Milner is doing what Corvette Racing factory drivers are signed to do - win Le Mans, win races, and perhaps very soon, win championships. Ironically, some of the strongest competition comes from within the Corvette Racing camp, where teammates, Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia in the #3 Corvette are currently second in the drivers championship, while the battle with BMW remains tight for manufacturer and team honors. Together with Gavin and Milner, these four drivers are focused on securing Corvette Racing its latest team and manufacturer championships and first since moving to the rugged GT class. Winning the manufacturer championship for Chevrolet is the first priority, said Milner. Winning the team championship for Corvette Racing comes next. The road to the 2012 championship has but two stops remaining, this week s four-hour race at VIR and the season-ending 10 Hours/1000 Miles of Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. For Tommy Milner, a Virginia boy, who formerly drove for the Panoz GT team; the road is through familiar territory. And lots of fans and friends will be watching to see if he can bring that first ALMS championship home.

ALMS 101 3 Imagine that you have created a racing series that brings together the world s top Prototypes and Productionbased GT cars at one track, at the same time, in the same race. The rules are open and encourage a number of different manufacturers, car designs, engines, tires and even different fuels. Welcome to the American Le Mans Series at the Virginia International Raceway - the first time for the championship at VIR. The ALMS is comprised of five different classes. The Le Mans Prototype LMP1 and LMP2 class features zoomy looking HPD Hondas, Mazda Lola coupes and a Morgan Nissan, while the Le Mans Prototype Challenge (PC) class races open-cockpit, single-design cars. Two Grand Touring classes bring production-based racers to the track. The GT class features cars from Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette, BMW and Lotus. With factory support, top teams, engineers and drivers, the ALMS GT class produces some of the best racing on the planet. The companion GT Challenge (GTC) class pits identical Porsches against one another for close and exciting racing. Each car has at least two drivers who split time behind the wheel in the four-hour race. WHAT TO WATCH Different cars have different performance characteristics. Watch to see if a particular car gains or loses ground at the entry or exit of the turns, on the straightaways or under braking. Keep an eye on traffic both ahead and behind. The top prototypes will typically start catching the slowest GTC cars after about 10 laps, and will remain in near-constant traffic. TRAFFIC With five classes on the track at once, traffic provides challenges for the drivers and plenty of action for the fans. The leading prototypes can expect to make hundreds of passes during the course of the race. Some rubbing between cars is inevitable, but penalties are assessed for avoidable contact, especially when the aggressor gains an advantage or disadvantages the victim. PIT STOPS Fuel-cell capacity typically means that the ALMS prototypes will pit about every 45 to 50 minutes while the GT cars can complete a full hour before needing to refuel. Look for driver changes on any pit stops after 40 minutes of race time. ALMS teams may not work on the car or change tires while the car is pitted for refueling, tempting teams to skip a tire change and go straight back into action without taking tires. RACE STRATEGIES With plenty of passing opportunities here at VIR, teams are likely to use a range of different race strategies. Teams must start the race on their qualifying tires. GT teams will try to do the race on three stops. If the first pit stops take place during a caution period, many teams will use the opportunity to change drivers and tires. If so, the second stop may see the driver remain in the car and perhaps a fuel-only stop. The sequence may reverse if the first stops are under the green flag. New tires typically do not offer the major performance advantage sometimes seen in other series.

4 CRUNCH TIME And then there were two. The first race at any track is exciting. Adding to the excitement and pressure of the ALMS debut here at Virginia International Raceway is the critical timing of a race with major championship implications. Just two races remain in the 2012 American Le Mans Series season and the driver, team and manufacturer championships are the big prize in many pairs of eyes. After eight races, just one 2012 American Le Mans Series championship is decided. The defending champion, two-car CORE autosport team from Rock Hill, SC, has ratcheted up six victories and put the PC class team title on ice. Alex Popow, with four wins, leads teammates Jon Bennett and Colin Braun (2) and RSR s Bruno Junqueira in the PC driver championship tussle. In the headlining LMP1 class, the California-based Muscle Milk Pickett Racing squad leads the way for the team, driver (Lucas Luhr and Klaus Graf) and manufacturer (Honda Performance Development) titles as they work to wrest them away from the defending champions, New York s Dyson Racing and drivers Chris Dyson and Guy Smith and Mazda. After a five-race win streak earlier in the season, the race has tightened considerably as Muscle Milk has struggled with mechanical issues in each of the last two races. The MMers made a stirring recovery to a narrow secondplace finish at Road America, but came home a distant 24th overall and third in class after dominating early at Baltimore. In the LMP2 class, Wisconsin s Level 5, Scott Tucker and Christophe Bouchut appeared to have the championship repeat in-hand, but drama is building as Eric Bachelart s Indianapolis-based Conquest Endurance squad with drivers Martin Plowman and David Heinemeier Hansson have taken a pair of recent wins to tighten the battle. A big one-two finish at Baltimore for Level 5 extended the gap to a dozen points, but the Conquest team has shown good speed. Also the return of Dempsey Racing, with a pair of podium finishes in its past three races, can certainly take points away from the championship contenders.

CRUNCH TIME 5 GT Class The tightest, most competitive class on the global sports car scene, the production-based GT class, has Michigan-based Corvette Racing poised to dethrone Ohio s BMW Team RLL. Corvette drivers Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin have three wins, while teammates Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia are second in the championship with four runner-up finishes. BMW is still very much in the fight, with Dirk Müller just two points behind the Garcia/Magnussen duo. The BMW Team RLL squad has taken both cars to victory this season. Another three points adrift is the Florida-based Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari pairing of Scott Sharp and Johannes van Overbeek, who have four podium finishes, including the team s first win on their 2012 scorecard. Porsche has been on a recent tear with California s Flying Lizard Motorsports #45 Porsche of Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister and the Indianapolis-based #17 Porsche team of Wolf Henzler and Bryan Sellers each taking a win. In all, six different cars from five teams, four manufacturers, and three tire makers have taken GT wins in the first eight races. Going for the Ws While the championship leaders and pursuers count their good fortune and carefully tally points, the teams and drivers out of the championship look to salvage wins and build their foundations for title runs in 2013. That is especially true for 2012 newcomers like Dempsey Racing and Alex Job Lotus. Improving performance, developing consistency and building momentum for next season are what matters most. After a mid-season debut, the new factory SRT Viper teams will miss a home race to prepare for the seasonending 10 Hour/1000 Mile, Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, October 20. For some, the first ALMS race at VIR will bring fond memories of a championship clinched. For others, it will mean disappointment, frustration, even heartbreak. Delivering under pressure is what championships are all about, and racing does not get any better than that.

FOUR: Number of different manufacturers with 2012 GT wins: The Season of 100 continues at VIR this weekend as Oliver Gavin celebrates his 100th ALMS start. Gavin is the eighth driver to cross the century mark this year, joining Bill Auberlen, Joerg Bergmeister, Chris Dyson, Butch Leitzinger, Sascha Maassen, Jan Magnussen and Johannes van Overbeek. 98,99...100 Don t shoot Speed.com reporter John Dagys (pictured above) got everyone s attention in Baltimore with his race day scoop on the impending ALMS and GRAND-AM series merger. Dagys says he and editor, Marshall Pruett confirmed the story with more than a dozen sources before posting. The official announcement was made September 5. The combined series will take effect in 2014. Chevrolet Corvettes (3); BMW (2), Porsche (2); Ferrari (1). THREE: Number of different tire makers with 2012 ALMS GT wins in the first eight races: (5), Dunlop (2), Falken (1). Also the number of the Corvette Racing car of Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia that is most likely the next to join the win list. They are currently second in points. Meet the tree Oak Tree turn is the signature corner here at VIR (see pic, page 7). If there are just two kinds of drivers at the Indy 500, those who have hit the wall and those who are going to hit the wall, then there those who have spun at Oak Tree and those who will spin.
